This black-and-white architectural photograph presents an abstract, close-up view of the Iowa City Public Library’s geometric facade. It highlights a repetitive grid of horizontal sunshades, protruding metal brackets and windows reflecting fragmented light. This high-contrast monochromatic composition emphasizes a sharp, rhythmic interplay between deep shadows and bright sunlight.
These exterior horizontal louvers on the library facade serve as a sustainable sun-shading system for the windows. This is commonly known in architecture as a brise-soleil. Their primary purpose is to balance natural lighting with energy efficiency by reducing solar heat and mitigating glare for patrons inside.

The geometric pattern attracted my eye (retired engineer explains that) then to discover a missing louver really stood out in this monochrome image.

A louver (American English) or louvre (British English) is a window blind or shutter with horizontal slats that are angled to admit light and air, but to keep out rain and direct sunshine. The angle of the slats may be adjustable, usually in blinds and windows, or fixed (Wikipedia)
After having compared the two definitions, we should note that "persienne" and "louver" designate sometimes really different things....(une persienne est un volet, en aucun cas un store; ses lamelles ne sont pas obligatoirement horizontales)

The scenic wooden tobacco sheds with louvered sides that dot country roads in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts in towns as Whately, Deerfield and Hadley have been an important characteristic of the New England Country side. Long preserved they are currently now in danger of being eliminated. I took this photo several weeks ago and last week this very same shed has shown signs of being dismantled.
The 1840’s saw a booming industry for tobacco products. These structures served a valuable purpose in their time for the local economy. Given the Tobacco industry’s decline these structures relevance have grown to be more about the historical character of the region rather than their function as storage for tobacco set for market. Today they are no longer used. Although many other barns have been converted into homes or other uses, the problem with recycled tobacco sheds is their characteristic louvered side slats that were designed to create air flow around the tobacco hung to dry for two months a year.
Even though I can empathize with the prevailing societal taboos which have emerged concerning tobacco use, I still am sad to see the tobacco sheds gradually disappearing from the landscape. I have several works in my photo gallery that depict these wonderful structures. This is one instance in which progress is I fear misdirected at least from a visual and aesthetic viewpoint.

LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Polytechnic University’s iconic Innovation, Science and Technology (IST) Building in Lakeland now ranks as one of the 16 “most breathtaking” buildings in the world, according to a survey of architects, placing it alongside iconic structures such as the Parthenon in Greece, the Empire State Building and Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Fallingwater” residence.
Business Insider’s “Tech Insider” magazine surveyed 16 prominent architects, asking each to pick just one structure they fondly think of as “breathtaking.” Architect Marica McKeel of Studio MM worked on the IST Building design and said, “Not only do I love the design of the Innovation, Science and Technology Building, but I feel a real connection to this project and to the Lakeland community as my father grew up in Lakeland and I still frequently visit family there.”
Designed by internationally-renowned architect Dr. Santiago Calatrava, the IST Building is the cornerstone of Florida Poly’s campus and the University’s main classroom and laboratory building. The 162,000-square-foot, white-domed building is a moveable and functional work of art, with a louvered roof system that adjusts with the sun’s angle, surrounded by a ring of curved metal pergolas that shade its outer terrace and walkways.
Calatrava repeatedly breaks new ground in architecture, with soaring designs for a new transit station at the rebuilt World Trade Center, a spiraling “Turning Torso” skyscraper in Sweden and the Peace Bridge in Calgary. Among the numerous awards associated with the IST Building is the distinguished Engineering News Record’s (ENR) Global Project of the Year award.
“The IST Building was created to provide an inspiring, modern atmosphere for learning, collaboration and innovation,” said Florida Poly President Dr. Randy K. Avent. “It’s invigorating to walk into this building each day and work alongside faculty, students and staff in one of the world’s most advanced structures.”
The IST Building houses 26 classrooms, the Aula Magna auditorium, faculty and administrative offices, an 11,000-square-foot Commons area and 11 innovation labs – including a 3D printing lab, cyber security lab and heath informatics lab – where students are able to get hands-on experience with the latest technology. Skanska USA was the lead contractor.

This is a view looking up at the windows (or louvers) which provide ventilation in the lower part of One World Trade Center. This was taken near the Golden Hour on the side of the tower in shade. The reflections of older buildings with golden light contrast nicely with the blues.
