So where does this love of ice and silver blades come from? I go looking for it and discover that there is even a schaatshistoricus in Holland, an historian whose specialism is the history of ice skating. His name is Marnix Koolhaas, and he willingly and kindly provides me with information.
Ice skating as a popular pastime
According to Marnix Koolhaas, one of the reasons for the Dutch enthusiasm for ice skating lies in the Reformation: “When Calvinism was on the rise in Holland in the 16th century, many Catholic festivals were abolished, including Carnival. Ice skating took the place of these festivals. People felt free and independent on the ice, and were able to escape for a short time from the strict standards and laws. The festivals then started taking place on the ice.”
And Marnix told me something else: “In Holland, there was what was referred to as verzuiling, the ´pillarising´ of society – categorizing citizens under separate so-called ´pillars´. Both private and social life were played out in a person´s own ‘pillar’ (Protestant, Catholic, Social-Democratic or liberal). This is why, even today, there is still a Catholic football club in Amsterdam. Only ice skating was never pillarised. All are equal on the ice – regardless of which religious community or political party they belong to. And so there’s no Catholic ice skating club either.” You have fun on the ice and feel free – that makes sense to me. There’s another reason, however, why the Dutch have ice skating in their blood. Not only can you do pirouettes on skates, but you can also cover longdistances

The Collared Pratincole is an Elegant, agile flier that looks like a cross between a plover and a swallow. Adult is warm gray-brown with an elegant "necklace" and red bill base. Juvenile is greyer, with white-fringed feathers.
Their name is a diminutive of Latin glarea, "gravel", referring to a typical nesting habitat for pratincoles.
The Great Reed Warbler is a huge warbler, 50% bigger than a Reed Warbler and almost as big as a Redwing. Most warblers move delicately through the reeds but this one crashes around clumsily. In plumage it looks quite similar to a Reed Warbler but it has a more obvious eyestripe and the larger size and stronger bill are usually obvious.
Habitat: Breeds in and around reed-beds, especially Phragmites.

The European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster) is a near passerine bird in the bee-eater family Meropidae. It breeds in southern Europe and in parts of north Africa and western Asia. It is strongly migratory, wintering in tropical Africa, India and Sri Lanka. This species occurs as a spring overshoot north of its range, with occasional breeding in northwest Europe.

I really wish I could have got a bunch closer to this Common Goldeneye. There is no reduction or enlargement here, just a heavy crop to the original pixels, so not much in the way of resolution to show much detail. A real shame as light was soft enough to give a really nice rendering of tones, in my opinion.
There was a male along side of her on this pier at Elk Island National Park, but he decided to go for a swim. Moments after this shot she stood up, and realizing I was not going to be able to get any closer, I left her in peace.
Spirit of the Outback train from Brisbane to Longreach trudges through the early morning fog blanketing remote farmland. The scenic journey through outback Australia takes twenty six hours.
Just a small wood in Emsworth, but part of the Wayfarer’s Walk which is a 70-mile, long-distance walking route.
The route will take you from its dramatic start, high on the chalk downs at Inkpen beacon to finish at Emsworth Harbour. You will walk over some of the finest chalk turf in Hampshire down to the mud flats and salt marshes along the coast, passing through these woods and down to the beach path which leads on to Emsworth millpond wall. Following this wall leads to the quay. The end of the walk.
Choose between high chalk downland with exhilarating views or chalk-stream valleys buzzing with wildlife, peaceful pubs in pretty villages or a busy market town. Or why not have a relaxing seaside picnic while watching the marsh wildlife.
Chief In Colorado. One can almost feel the spirit of the Santa Fe Railroad in the air as Amtrak Train 4 (Southwest Chief) travels through Trinidad, Colorado on April 14, 2022 AMTK 161 (P42DC, Phase I, 50th Anniversary) through Trinidad, Colorado on April 14, 2022. Built through mountains and canyons, the route of the Chief parallels Interstate 25 through this area but there are few other signs of modern development. The train is carries on the legacy of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway's "Super Chief", which was inaugurated in 1936 and with the implementation of the Rail Passenger Service Act of 1970 became part of Amtrak on May 1, 1971. Phase I paint was introduced in 1972 as Amtrak began to develop its own branding distinct from the then freight only railroads that had left he passenger business.

I have reported the band and will add information about the bird when I receive it.
As far as my lens would take me and a lot of cropping. I was so excited watching the Stork I didn't see the Cormorant until later.
EU07-1519 of PKP Cargo (leased by PKP Intercity) is headed downhill after departing from Krynica working IC 33104/5 "Małopolska".
On the right of the train are some allotments/Kleingärten/działki, which are very popular among many Poles in summer. In the colder seasons however, they remain completely abandoned. The short term for them in Polish is ROD (derived from Rodzinne Ogródki Działkowe), and some like to jokingly reffer to spending summer vacation in them as "Vacation on RODos" :)

The Envelope Of Light. Amtrak Train 30 (Capitol Limited) crossed the Youghiogheny River in McKeesport, Pennsylvania at a little before 0700 on Sunday, May 22, 2022 with P42DC AMTK 48 leading 5 Superliners. As it turns out, this is exactly the right time for the sun to come up over the horizon and illuminate the entire train on this deck plate girder bridge. A relatively recent construction, this span was built by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in 1967 as part of a project to cease street running in McKeesport.

218.425 rushes out of Klanxbüll with the evening IC 2374 train from Stuttgart to Westerland auf Sylt. The locomotive still carries a yellow triangle on the cowcatcher - a very characteristic feature of locomotives from the depot in Kempten.
You might have seen a very simmilar picture posted on our page by my dad, but here's my take on it.
Since the very beginnings of my interest in the Marschbahn I was especially drawn in by the mechanical semaphore signals on most of the railway line. That way, Klanxbüll became a sort of a Mecca for us both times we visited (in 2023 we even had an appartament by the railway station). For me, the general vibe of Klanxbüll is very simmilar to some of the railway stations on our Ostbahn from Kostrzyn to Tczew and further to Braniewo and Kaliningrad. Two tracks, no catenary, semaphore signals, even a red brick station building. There only is one difference - the amount of traffic :).
Anyways - I was very inspired by some shots I saw and decided that what I really wanted to have is this evening shot of an IC train with this distant signal referring to the Klanxbüll station. Mechanical distant signals are somewhat of a rarity in Poland because of many modernisations and so it seemed like a very attractive place for me. Besides that, the perfect evening light makes the scene a bit closer to ideal.

754.026 leaves Reda in the warm, evening sun with dark, heavy clouds rolling in from the east. On the hook - 7 coaches of an Intercity train to Hel. The station, which the train had just left, is the last place of its journey which has overhead catenary, from this point onwards, the train continues with no wires above and only a revving engine.
In most tourist destinations in Poland, very little Intercity traffic happens in the middle of the day. Hel is of course no exception. In the very early morning a couple of night trains from southern Poland arrive here and then some others leave the little touristy town to reach their destinations all the way down south before evening.
In the late afternoon the reverse happens - daytime trains from southern Poland end their journey on the peninsula and their locomotives then take up night trains from Hel back to the mainland. Rinse and repeat.
This sort of planning sums up to a total of a whopping 3 locomotives from the Gdynia Grabówek depot doing daily service on the railway line to Hel.
