Sometimes it's a blessing when free seats are sparse. This striking woman welcomed us at her table, when our eyes wandered around. Soon we were engaged in talk.

Amsterdam Central Station was the perfect location for her story. Originating in Nigeria, grown up in New York, married to a Dutchman and now living in London, she represented the global citizen of our times. With her her golden hair and velvet dress she looked like a siren from the Odysea, a modern version of ancient times. "It took three hours in the hair salon," she laughed.

"I was trained as a nurse and worked in a hospice in New York. You know what that is?" I nodded: "Assisting people in their final stage. With every new patient you face the great goodbye."

"I was good at the job," she said, "but then I got two beautiful children and I decided to change my focus. I am now training to become a doula. You know what that is?" Something stirred in the back of my mind.

"It's like a baby nurse, but much more personal. You also focus on the mother and her well being."

"So, from death to birth" I summed up the change of perspective. "Tell us, what is your name?"

"Everybody calls me Blessing," she said. "Yes, it's my real name. My parents gave me an African name too. But Blessing fits me."

There is a saying on the Island of Saint Martin among the (wealthy) locals: No matter how big your yacht might be, you can only arrive here in the knowledge that there is always another larger yacht than yours!

Surprisingly enough, this saying is still going strong. Hurricane Irma, which hit Saint Martin on September 6th in 2017, with winds gusting up to 180 mph, the number of big yachts that were destroyed was enormous.

This is the super yacht "Go". She was launched in March of 2018. The 77x13 metre (253x43 ft) motor yacht led to many wow’s and other amazed reactions by the crowds at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2018. On that moment she was the showcase and flagship project by the Turkish Turquoise Yachts Shipyard in Kocaeli and Pendik in the outskirts of Istanbul. Featuring both an exterior and interior design from the London-based studio, H2 Design, with a turquoise hull which pays tribute to her yard's name. Inside, she is capable of accommodating 18 guests 9 cabins and 19 crew members in 11 cabins in total. She is owned by Hans Peter Wild; half of the silver “W” on bow is a hint for that.

The yacht has an estimated value of 90 million US$, a displacement of 1,952t and has IMO identifier 9774305 (if you want to look her up in MarineTraffic.com ;-)

Technical stuff

This is a single shot photo taken at f7.1, 5.0 secs, -2/3, 200 ISO with a 16-55mm lens at 21,3mils. I didn’t have a tripod with me at that moment. So, so I lay down flat on my belly with the camera ground.

Post-production was done with LR CC. It included balancing the lighting (due to the bright lights of the ship), toning the colouring a little and dehazing the sky a bit. Finally, I added a couple of copyright signs. The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the fact that my photos were frequently copied. So, don't bother commenting on that.
