Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Katendrecht, Migratiemuseum, Tornado, People (uncut)

Back to the Rotterdam MigratieMuseum (and the Tonado). It is situated in what was once a part of the giant San Francisco veem (harbour storage facility). It has been thru a lot. It was built for the HAL transatlantic shipping company in 1898, and its middle part was destroyed during WW2. The left part of the building (Fenix 1), among other things, served as a temporary art exposition space and now functions as the basis for the FenixLofts luxury apartment building. Ah, the story of gentrification.

The Migration Museum is in the right part of the former Veem, also known as Fenix 2. It once housed a Van Gend & Loos logistics hub, the Pinball Museum, the ‘Circuscentrum op De Kaap’ (Codarts Circus Arts school), and, last but not least, the Posse Brasserie.

It was spectacularly transformed (design Bureau Polderman & the Chinese MAD Architects) into the Fenix-Migration museum, with the ‘Tornado’ staircase (on display here) as its centre (designed by Ma Yansong, the founder of MAD).

And don’t think the museum is all about form and less about content. The way it commemorates the millions of emigrants who left Europe and Rotterdam in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is fascinating. The portrayal of the more recent migration to Europe is also documented excellently. For instance, there’s a dusty Peugeot 404 pick-up on display that was used to transport migrants through the Sahara to Libya on their way to the risky Mediterranean crossing.

Pretzel logic is a Steely Dan song from the eponymous album.

The Dugald Stewart Monument, on Calton Hill, Edinburgh, Scotland.

Dedicated to the Scottish philosopher Dugald Stewart, a leading philosopher of his time. Stewart held the chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, teaching philosophy, natural philosophy, economics, logic, and Greek for 42 years, from 1786 until his death in 1828. The monument was designed by noted architect William Henry Playfair, responsible for so much of Edinburgh's architecture. It was completed in 1831, and is a category A listed.

Big Up!

Big Up! – Where chaos makes sense

In the unlikely heart of Fukuoka, a frayed storefront defies logic. Stacked boxes, makeshift doors, faded signs, exposed pipes—and yet… everything seems right where it should be.

There’s no effort to impress, no curated aesthetic—only a raw kind of honesty pouring out of apparent dysfunction.

This is the charm: a disordered balance, beauty that doesn’t ask permission, a silent invitation to enter even if you’re not sure where it leads.

I don't know how else to phrase this.

It would stand to reason that the build is a build. But clowns are sometimes the stuff of nightmares, and sometimes that calls for a reversal of logic.

If you follow me on Facebook, you may have seen me posting about the resizing process for that build. It's too awesome to not feature in its entirety.

Skin: Clown Makeup by BeSpoke Caravan, available at Dark Style Fair, and afterwards at the BeSpoke Caravan Mainstore. Thepack includes the base skin layers for the face/body, as well as individual makeup and blood-stain layers. This comes in EvoX and SLUV compatible versions. Everything you see is the skin and makeup!

Outfit: Nightmare Klown - Pyro by Dreadmorne at Engine Room, and afterwards at the Dreadmorne MP Store. The outfit comes in male and female sizes in multiple color options, and includes the shirt, vest, and pants. Delightfully bloody, if you ask me.

Fun House: Funhouse by What's Lost Spirits, available at Engine Room, afterwards at the What's Lost Spirits Mainstore. The Funhouse is a full-size, three-story building with various rooms and parts, including media-enabled rooms. You know what else it is? Fully modifiable. A Catepillar to Butterfly Wings of Beauty and Transformation

The prompt, a caterpillar crawls,

With words that bind, and logic sprawls.

It inches forth, a humble guise,

Yet holds a dream within its size.

The AI stirs, a chrysalis bright,

Where code and form ignite in light.

Within its depths, a change unseen,

Where pixels bloom, a vibrant scene.

The image bursts, a butterfly's grace,

With wings of colour, time and space.

A fleeting thought, now art made real,

The dream takes flight, the vision revealed.

The MTA-MAB headquarters building was built in 1896 for the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. After 1945, the building was used by the County Council. Later it was the home of the Ferenc Rákóczi County Library and then by the Herman Ottó Museum.

The eclectic style of the building corresponded to its time and expressed the taste of the industrial class looking back on old traditions and the up-and-coming merchants who got rich at the end of the last century. Although it is not a monument, it is of cityscape importance, because the proportion of the main masses, its rich plastic play, and above all the beauty and pure logic of the interior spaces created a dignified, beautiful public building. The renovation of the building and its transformation for the MAB headquarters were carried out by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences based on the plans of architect Anna Cifka. I was born in far away in the West but since birth I have stared over the horizon feeling bonded to something that is a part of me and who I am from a time long ago. A beautiful ancient pure land as old as humanity itself from bustling colorful and cultural cities to the high mountains that abound this land. The connection is so strong in fact that I feel a part of me is missing like having family but never seeing them for your whole life ofcorse I live with family in Palm Springs who I love very much today however there is a mystery. The thing that defies logic is how could this be? Long ago shortly after I was born the so called "alien abduction switch" occurred. "The switch" is something that the family jokes about all the time because the event was so unheard of to be chilling. At about 6 months old I was locked in a crib in an upstairs 2nd floor bedroom secured by a locked window with an alarmed screen. It was afternoon naptime and according to my parents I had gone silent for over an hour because I was usually a pretty noisy baby. When they came up I had disappeared from my crib but they then noticed the window had been opened. Over 12 feet below they spotted me on the concrete slab playing with the grass growing through the cracks. Keep in mind, I am 6 months old in which I had managed to climb out of an elevated crib, figure out how to unlock and disarm the screen and window and jump out 12 feet onto concrete without a single scratch. A complete mystery but from that day on dreams of other places and times from the cosmos took hold searching for something in a place where I felt out of place.

My feelings and emotions about things are tied to a distant land I had never been to for most of my life and then in recent years I feel like someone is feeling the sameway towards me from that distant land. Separated but drawn together. My life is dynamic full of tremendous emotion. So much joy but yet feeling like I am missing something. One half of being whole and she is out there somewhere feeling the sameway. Will it ever be as you can see here? Time will only tell so I throw this bottle out into the sea of cyberspace and hope on that distant shore where ever she may happen to be she may pick the bottle up and read the message. I meanwhile go into periodic spells of tears and sadness only hoping she will respond..............

NOT POSED (logically)!!

When you have a full fridge, no cake saver, and need to safely store a cake from marauding critters, you store that confection in the microwave - right?.....

A shot from the photowalk in La Jolla in April. Some of the locals were complaining about the weather. It was a lot more comfortable than the blizzard I had left behind in the Eastern Sierra, so I thought it was great! The cloud cover was nice too, adding texture compared to some alternatives like blue sky or fog.
