A narrow road, mostly an unpaved dirt road winds its way along Bali’s rugged east coast around the volcano Mt, Seraya. Back in time strangers were very rarely to be found there and the locals often looked with suspicion when someone like me went there. For my chauffeur, the jeep ride was also a real challenge! Sometimes he would stop and ask, where is the road? It was sometimes so steep that you couldn't see where it was leading in the curves. But the breathtaking view we could enjoy was worth all the trouble.
Hidden in the haze on the horizon we saw the neighboring island of Lombok, which is separated from Bali and the Asian tectonic plate by the deep Lonbok Trench. Lombok is on the Australian Plate and is very different from Bali in terms of flora and fauna. Here the sea is very deep and there are dangerous whirlpools and currents. The so-called Ring of Fire of the South Pacific is here with its numerous volcanoes.

This young great horned owl is a big draw at Dawson creek - I heard about it from other photographers/bird enthusiasts, so went for a visit.

This is a Townsend's solitaire. It was seen on Sunday at Koll Center wetlands, and soon had attracted bird watchers and photographers to try to catch a view of it. I wasn't fortunate enough on Sunday, but did get to see it today - a lifer for me! Thanks to Keith Todd for calling my attention to the location!
Even today, travelers to Greece can still find many hidden treasure destinations which retain their almost unspoiled beauty, such as the island of Trizonia.
As hard to believe as it may be, because Greece has such a long coastline, as well as almost innumerable islands, there still are a wealth of locations which would make one think that these places are off the map.
One such island without a doubt, is Trizonia, located in the Corinthian Gulf just 400 meters (1,312 feet) off the southwestern coast of the region of Fokida.
The island is said to have been named for the sound of its crickets, which you can always hear singing away while you are there.
This is the famed island which, after visiting it in the 1960’s, Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis attempted to buy — lock, stock and barrel — from the local people who lived there by offering them an enormous lump sum of money.
The locals refused, famously saying that this specific paradise was not for sale. Minas, a local restaurateur, shared with the Greek Reporter that occasionally the thought does cross his mind that “it would have been good if Onassis had bought it.”
The islanders’ refusal is what led Onassis later to buy the island of Skorpios in the Ionian Sea, which he made into his own personal Eden.
The island of Trizonia has been called by many a miracle of nature. While staying on the island, which is just 2.4 square kilometers, or barely one square mile, travelers can forget everything from the outside world, including cars, motorbikes, noise — and stress.
Trizonia is also an island garden of sorts, boasting almond, prickly pear, eucalyptus, holly, plum, and olive trees, as well as pine and cedar trees throughout.
The island only has 40-50 residents in the winter. However, Minas maintains that “in the winter it’s a bit difficult, it gets a bit cold, but if you have good company, good wine and good food, everything is fine.”
With a natural, unspoiled landscape that amazes visitors, its lacework of interconnected, continuous beaches, and sapphire waters, Trizonia and its singing crickets beckon to the discerning visitor who needs a break from the modern world.
Edward Blaquiere, a former lieutenant in the Royal Navy and a well known philhellene of his time, visited Trizonia in 1825 and he mentions a ruined village. He also mentions the excellent harbour of the island which is sheltered from all winds. The Greek military leader and politician Andreas Londos came to Trizonia in 1827 with 500 soldiers. In the ensuing battle with the 2000 Ottomans who were there at that time, the Greeks under the guidance of Londos won, causing great damage to the Ottoman army.

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon, at 8000 ft., provides one with an expansive view of the canyon, sky and the weather that passes through. Watching these storms was musical. As they say, "all politics is local", so too with rain!
I've been going over to Commonwealth Lake for the last few weeks, in anticipation of the arrival of the Osprey. I keep hearing about the Virginia Rail, and where to look for it, but hadn't been fortunate enough to see it - until Friday. Came out into plain sight - briefly - before darting back into the brush.
Eight Thousand Horses spot seventy tons of bricks at W.R. Taylor Company in the middle of Tarragona Street in Pensacola, Florida. With apparently no more four-axles in the yard, a pair of six-axle Gevos did the honors of swapping an empty for a loaded boxcar at W.R. Taylor this night. While certainly not the ideal set of power for my liking, having caught a rare daylight move a few days prior with a proper leader on this already very difficult to catch and unique operation, I was happy to document the odd move. The empty boxcar was set out further back so the conductor could connect a road barrier to it across the street to avoid any northbound traffic while switching. Pensacola, FL
At a local park not more than a few miles from my house. At low tide there is solid stretch of land that connects to the small island just right of center. This area is a designated bird sanctuary home to gulls, Canadian geese, egrets, swans, hawks, flacons and various species of mallards. This area is not recommended during hot summer days as mosquitos, deer flies and ticks will bite you to pieces.
Friday's R-MRL841 tends to return east with a healthy cut of power, as they often bring back the Logan local power for relay to Livingston or points east. This week's train was no exception, and with an extra GP9 in the mix, they ended up having five engines. After building their train at Logan, they wasted no time heading east - we beat them from the west end of Manhattan siding here to the west end of Bozeman siding with seconds to spare.

The local White Tailed Kites squabbling again.
I have heard of mass roosting of up to 29 Kites here. Today at sunrise I saw 11 kites in the air at one time, coming from the same direction. They were likely coming from that roost area. Quite a few of them flew directly off towards LLC.
