As the sun sets in the western sky the color of dusk cast over the Arizona desert.

This was a suggestion from a dear relative. It was something that I had been planning to do anyway.. so here it is.

Placed about most towns, these utility boxes are generally ignored by everyone. As part of it's beautification program the city of San Luis Obispo commissioned local artists to paint mini murals on the utility boxes. I find them to be great examples of the artistic talent in town.

I think this may have been an old mid-century Gulf Oil Gas/Filling Station. It is now the Rowdy Maui - a ladies clothing shop that also sells funky gifts and local art. As their website proudly proclaims, they have been "keeping downtown Rockport weird since 2006."

my buddy Maggie just went through a ton of drama with a woman that bought one of her paintings during a show we had at Art Farm. at one point when the drama got super thick.. the woman told Maggie "I don't think I want to support local art anymore".. super passive aggressive, which is really common in Seattle.

I had to borrow the phrase.. I love it!!

FRANCE 2018

Earlier this year we took a wonderful trip to France. We stayed in a small seaside town called Wimereux, between Calais and Boulogne. It was a lovely place, great food, beach and people. We enjoyed the break very much and I took a few photos. Here are a few of them………..

A view of Arts on Queen, a beloved gallery and gift shop at 2198 Queen Street East in Toronto. Showcasing original Canadian artwork, handcrafted jewelry, and locally made gifts, the space has long been a hub for creative expression in the Beaches community.

They are part of SLO Art, the city beautification project. Designed and painted by local artists, it is an effort to make the dull gray metal boxes more of an addition to neighborhoods.

It started in the Downtown area and has now spread to most of the town.

This particular one is signed by Marcie Hawthorne, a fairly well known local artist. (she has also done several others and are some of the best)

I found some more random graffiti around town today. I wish I knew who was putting up these tags around town so they could decorate my basement walls.

I shot this with with my 24-70mm f/2.8 lens and my Nikon D800E.

... oil on canvas, 18" x 18". My final painting for the local studio tour on the last two weekends of the month (making 18 new paintings since last year's show). Title refers to the dire circumstances for monarch butterflies who are disappearing at a tragic rate. This image is based on a photo I took of the one monarch I saw in my area last summer (used to always see many dozens--including eggs and caterpillars; but no eggs nor caterpillars last year nor this). Did see a few butterflies this summer around my property.

Week #32 Urban Fragments - Bear Bench in Grass Park. This bench is on the main street in downtown Brooklin, Ontario, Canada. Unfortunately the bench is exposed to the elements all year and the wood is deteriorating. Hopefully the town will do something to restore and protect it soon.

amidst the narrow streets of palma de mallorca, a woman in a vibrant red dress walks past a wall adorned with colorful graffiti. the striking green apple, painted with bold strokes, stands out against the weathered texture of the wall, creating a vivid contrast. this scene captures the dynamic interplay between human movement and urban art, a testament to the city's vibrant culture and artistic expression.

I have to get away from the landscapes... at least for an image or two.

Right on the heels of returning from Banff I took a trip back east to visit my dad. He lives in upper Vermont, just about 5 miles from the Canadian border. Usually visiting him involves flying into Burlington, Vermont and driving the 90 minutes upstate. This time though I changed it up and flew into Montreal instead, which is just a two hour drive from northern Vermont. I figured it had to be more interesting than Burlington.

I do love visiting cities. There is always a character to a city that is fun to figure out and get to know. Every city has its defining traits, not to mention its history and stories. I did not really know what to expect from Montreal. It had never really been on my radar as a city I was especially eager to visit. And I certainly cannot say that the four days I spent there have made me any kind of expert. I did really love how it felt the most like a European city of any other metropolis I have visited in the U.S. or Canada. I knew it was French... but I was not quite prepared for how French. And mixed in with its Frenchness was an incredibly international diversity.

Since Montreal was really a beginning and takeoff location, I only got to see some of its highlights. One of those days was spent walking the Rue Saint-Paul from the Notre Dame basilica (yeah, they have one too) over to Le Grande Roue de Montréal (a giant Ferris Wheel) and back. The Rue Saint-Paul is a popular tourist location studded with the kind of galleries that love showcasing the kind of art tourists with budgets love to buy. The art on display was not really my cup of tea but I did find this painting in a window that I thought made an interesting juxtaposition for a pinhole image. Two minutes later I had the exposure and went on my way to find a late lunch.

Would I go back to Montreal? Definitely. It is a city that feels like it has lots of to explore and I was lucky enough to hit it right at the peak of its fall colors which made it even more resplendent. But if/when I go again I will make sure to freshen up on my French first.
