We are still 3 weeks away from Chinese New Year but the lion dance troops are already starting their performances round town.
tradition! tradition ! a colourless and bland life without traditions! preparations on the way as this community inches its way to the year of the rabbit with a lion dance
This is very hard work - see his veins pop. The background has not been masked. I shot this low, against the sky.
About this series: I have photographed Lion Dances in the past but never published any. I’ve always been disappointed. Somehow, they looked overly familiar.
So, this year, I took a different view. I focused on shots that you’ve probably missed in the heat of the moment: that one moment where the lion is backlit against the sky, the majestic billowing of the costume, the grip of the performers, the precision of landing on tiny stilts, etc.
It sure was a challenge trying to get the three dancing lions in a decent shot. But, this was about the best I could manage! 😅
Have an exciting day, everyone...
They practice the same move over and over again. Perfection is required on every action

Performed by Yi Wei Athletic Association (Singapore) at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre during Huayi 2024, Festival of Chinese Arts.
Just a change from the normally very colourful Lion Dance.
Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.
Night shots were very difficult – no flash, low ISO, low speed, lens wide open – literally waiting for the moment when they paused to make a turn.
Sorry about the quality of the photographs but I only had a point and shoot camera that does not work well in low light.
Yesterday I attended a lecture at the TU college campus and it was mentioned that there is now a Chinatown in Dublin [Capel Street and Parnell street]. I don't agree as many [if not the majority] of the restaurants are not Chinese but it is possible that most of the buildings are owned by Chinese landlords. For example the owners of the Mieko King at 101 Capel Street Restaurant are Vietnamese but by the same token there is a Japanese Restaurant owned by a Chinese couple.
Today I was walking along Capel Street on my way to the Hungry Mexican on Aston Quay but as I was passing the Mieko King at 101 on Capel Street I was invited in as they were expecting Lion Dancers to arrive within ten minutes and sure enough they did arrive. Later I mentioned this to my ninety year old aunt and she could not understand why there would be Line Dancing in an Asian restaurant.
