Snow Bunting - Plectrophenax Nivalis
Snow buntings are large buntings, with striking 'snowy' plumages. Males in summer have all white heads and underparts contrasting with a black mantle and wing tips. Females are a more mottled above. In autumn and winter birds develop a sandy/buff wash to their plumage and males have more mottled upperparts.
Globally, they breed around the arctic from Scandinavia to Alaska, Canada and Greenland and migrate south in winter. They are a scarce breeding species in the UK, in Scotland, making them an Amber List species. They are more widespread in winter in the north and east when residents are joined by continental birds.
They are listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act.
The snow bunting lives in very high latitudes in the Arctic tundra. There is no apparent limit to its northern range, while the southern range is limited by the duration of daylight, which influences their reproductive activity. This species is found in the high Arctic tundra of North America, Ellesmere Island, Iceland, higher mountains of Scotland, Norway, Russia, North Greenland, Siberia, Novaya Zemlya, and Franz Josef Land. During the winter, this bird migrates to the circumglobal northern temperate zone including the south of Canada, north of the United States, north of Germany, Poland, Ukraine, and east to central Asia. During the last ice age, the snow bunting was widespread throughout continental Europe.
During the breeding period the snow bunting looks for rocky habitats in the Arctic Since the vegetation in the tundra is low growing, this bird and its nestlings are exposed to predators, and in order to ensure the survival of its offspring, the snow bunting nests in cavities in order to protect the nestlings from any threat. During this period, buntings also look for a habitat rich in vegetation such as wet sedge meadows and areas rich in dryas and lichens. In the winter, they look for open habitats such as farms and fields where they feed on seeds in the ground.

After being at work from 6:15 am until 7:15 pm ... by the time I got home and ate a quick dinner, when I looked outside around 8 the sky looked like it could potentially be colorful. I debated whether to head out in a rush down to the river (about a 15 minute ride) ... and decided I needed to get a break from the stress of work and enjoy a few minutes of the day.
Was not disappointed with the colors ... here is a 10 second capture made with the 64ND (6 Stop) filter.
Interesting how by this time of the year the sun is setting way up river as opposed to beyond the end of the pier like it does in winter. Limits the compositions.

BARRIO DE PALOMAREJOS
“…..el topónimo Palomarejos se usaba ya a mediados del siglo XVIII, pues en el Catastro de Ensenada se registra una tierra llamada así, de quince fanegas de sembradura, perteneciente al Ayuntamiento de Toledo” (JUulio Porres Martín-Cleto).
Situado al noroeste de la ciudad, delimitado en la actualidad por las Avenidas de Barber, Portugal, Europa y General Villalba, y circundado por otros barrios como el Poblado Obrero, Buenavista, San Antón y Reconquista-Santa Teresa.
Palomarejos se asienta sobre el solar de un extenso terreno perteneciente en su día a la Sociedad General de Ganaderos, ya que en ellos existió un descansadero para ganados trashumantes que se desplazaban por el llamado “Cordel del Guadarrama”, ocupado hoy por la calle Coronel Baeza y la avenida de Barber.
Hasta la década de 1920 no se conocían otras construcciones en este lugar que las de un camposanto –desaparecido a finales del siglo XIX al inaugurarse el actual cementerio municipal- y una granja con vaquería conocida como la “del tío Matuco”, con sembrados de garbanzos y otros productos agrícolas y ganaderos. El citado camposanto estaba ubicado en los terrenos que más tarde ocuparía la Escuela Normal de Magisterio, mientras que la granja estaba muy cerca del actual ambulatorio de la Seguridad Social.
Pero el verdadero origen del barrio tal como hoy lo conocemos habría que situarlo a mediados de la década de los 50 , con la construcción y entrega en 1954 de las primeras viviendas de los bloques del “Grupo Pedro Villaescusa”, promovido por la Obra Sindical del Hogar perteneciente a la Delegación Nacional de Sindicatos. Esta primera barriada, conocida popularmente como “Corea” por la guerra que se desarrollaba en aquellos años en el lejano país asiático, fue ocupada por familias humildes dentro de un plan encaminado a prevenir los asentamientos chabolistas en la ciudad. A partir de entonces fueron surgiendo a su alrededor construcciones de diversa índole que, aunque limitadas por los terrenos de la Escuela de Gimnasia hasta hace pocos años, fueron expandiendo el barrio hasta sus límites actuales.

Sunrise at a 5 star lodge accommodation near Te Anau. My wife found a deal on the internet! You might notice the "grain" (noise) where I extracted as much shadow detail as I could from a single RAW file (and forgot to turn down the ISO after astro shots the night before). In hindsight I could have taken a second shot to get the foreground but there we are. Have a great Thursday (8 17 am here) and thanks for visiting.
Der Ostwestfalendamm ist die autobahnähnlich ausgebaute Bielefelder Stadtautobahn im Verlauf der Bundesstraße 61. Umgangssprachlich wird er auch „OWD“ oder „Ossi“ genannt.
Er führt vom Ende des Ostwestfalentunnels ab der Auffahrt Ernst-Rein-Straße bis zur A 33 in Bielefeld-Brackwede. Zuletzt wurde am 5. Dezember 2012 das 1,4 Kilometer lange Teilstück vom Südring in Brackwede bis zur A 33 (AS Bielefeld-Zentrum) für den Verkehr freigegeben.
Auf dem Ostwestfalendamm gilt eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 100 km/h. Zwischen den Anschlussstellen Ernst-Rein-Straße und Bielefeld-Quelle gilt zudem von 22 bis 6 Uhr aus Lärmschutzgründen ein Limit von 80 km/h.

Too far in the boonies to get stuck, so we had to admit defeat and turn around. We had already gone through some questionable spots, but this one just wasn't going to work.
