Hepatica likes to live on thin limestone soils in Winneshiek County's hill country and they bloom first on sunny south-facing slopes like the one seen here. Big bur oaks shade them later on in May. You can see a sliver of Lake Meyer shining in the upper left corner.

Couldn't help but throw in that childhood song!
Here he is, the much aligned brood parasite, the Brown-headed Cowbird (male). That means that the female lays eggs in the nests of other birds and then takes off, leaving the other bird responsible for the raising of the Cowbirds' young. As I see it, Nature has its reasons, no matter how hard for us to understand.
This male was scurrying around like a madman as he searched for food and paid little attention to me. In the right light, the colours of the male are really lovely (IMHO).

He has a mouse stashed in some tall grass nearby. He keeps flying back and forth to take a bit or two then comes back to this out post where he can keep a close eye on it.

(Romans 10:1-13)
Jesus came to bring spiritual LIFE to the spiritually dead and set the captives FREE! FREE from RELIGION, ERROR and outright LIES, so WE might serve THE LIVING GOD! In SPIRIT and in TRUTH!
So you'll KNOW, and not think you're to bad for God to love. The Christian LIFE isn't about how good WE are, because NONE of us are! It's about how GOOD JESUS IS! Because JESUS LOVES US, so much he died in our place and took the punishment for all of our sins on himself. The wages of sin is DEATH, and Jesus took the death WE so richly deserved for us and died in our place. The good news is, there's no more punishment for sin left. WE, you and I were all born forgive as a result of the crucifixion of God himself on the cross that took away the sins of the whole world. All we have to do is believe it, and put your Faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. That my friends is REAL UNCONDITIONAL LOVE! YOU ARE LOVED. ❤️ ✝️ ❤️
