If we remember the normal histology of the skeletal muscle, is evident that in this electron micrograph there are elements different. Within the neuromuscular diseases, the Nemaline myopathy is a condition that requires the Transmision Electron Microscopy of the patient biopsies to stablish the diagnosis, is important the observation with this technique to find numerous structures called nemaline rods. In this micrograph, nemaline rods are seen as electrodense bodies elongated or rounded and located below the plasma membrane, in the perinuclear area.

The mitochondria is the representative sample of the theory of endosymbiosis

mentioned by Lynn Margulis 50 years ago (Lynn Sagan; On The Origin of Mitosing Cell,

J Theoret Biol 1967 14, 225-274), is one of the most evolved energy generators.

A TEM with tomography holder was used, the tissue used is rat kidney, the

Mitochondria are taken from epithelial cells of the Proximal Tubule

processed conventionally for TEM with a cut of 120nm. The 3D image of

Ultrastructural tomography was integrated from the inclination of the holder. The white color of the 3D image shows the spaces

empty of the mitochondrial crests, the red color shows the external part of the mitochondria and the inner mitochondrial membrane forming the mitochondrial crests.

There have been few things in the world that were as cute as our friend Moonlight. Particularly as a kitten. Here we see him at age 19 or 20 weeks. Tail going, nose and paws into something he probably shouldn't be into... If you knew him, you'd know how loudly he would purr when having this much fun...

the main entrance to the Weill Hall, the new Life Sciences Technology Building at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; completed in 2008 and designed by architect Richard Meier; the cladding is in Meier's signature white enameled steel panels; note also the stainless steel panels used as edging to the bermed landscaping along the sides of the walkway

This scanning electron microscope image depicts a nanoporous silicon microparticle (NPS) being recognized by the filopodia of a macrophage cell, the first step of phagocytosis. NPS are strategically designed to overcome the biological barriers of the body and preferentially accumulate at diseased vasculature due to their unique shape that facilitates margination. When nanoparticles are embedded into the pores, NPS act as a carrier that decouples the multiple tasks typically required of a traditional nanoparticle. This multi-step approach favors increased accumulation of nanoparticles at the target site.

Developing new implant surfaces which will increase bone anchorage and eventually increase the lifespan of dental implants is an ongoing challenge. My current laboratory investigates new bone formation on the titanium implants with different surface modifications to find the most efficient modification for bone formation and anchorage.

Shown here is residual bone on a titanium implant which was implanted in a rat tibia for nine days following mechanical disruption test. How osteoclasts (light blue) settled on the residual bone surface is astonishing. Some of them already started to resorb the residual bone and formed their resorption trails (maroon) throughout the implant surface. Scanning electron microscopy images of residual bone are very helpful for us to understand the bone-material interaction. Moreover, imaging several osteoclasts in a frame while they were resorbing on an implant surface was an extraordinary moment for me to capture, which inspired me to share this image in the contest. The image was false coloured to increase the visibility of osteoclasts and their resorption trails on the titanium implant.

Dating back to March, I'm not sure I realized I had this picture. Its both of them - ok, half of him, most of her. But it shows that both of them visited our kitchen porch.

Jean saw Rhodie a couple of weeks ago- between Thanksgiving and Christmas. She said he looked well, sleek and well fed, he's found other people to feed him or some other well rewarded activity. We'd seen him a few times in the spring and then not, and I fear for him. I was afraid raccoons or another feral cat had run him off. Or worse.
