This is part of an evolving photo-project, which will probably continue throughout the summer of 2008, and perhaps beyond: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan -- between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.
I don't like to intrude on people's privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they're still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what's right in front of me.
I've also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting -- literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I've learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture ... after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it's pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.
For the most part, I've deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, homeless people, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don't want to be photographed, and I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of them. I'm still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We'll see how it goes ...
The only other thing I've noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, *far* more people who are *not* so interesting. They're probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I've photographed ... but there was just nothing memorable about them.

Upper East Side, Central Park - Jun 2008 - 067
These pictures were taken on two successive days when I had doctor appointments on the Upper East Side of NYC, and had the chance to walk along Fifth Avenue, and then through Central Park in order to return to my apartment on the Upper West Side, at Broadway & 96th.
I had now reached the west side of the inner roadway that circumnavigates Central Park, and was heading north toward the exit on 96th Street. I was at about 94 Street at this point -- looking east, with the reservoir in the background.

Note: this photo was taken 4+ years ago, in the summer of 2008, when my editing and "post-processing" consisted of little more than simple cropping with Apple's iPhoto program. On Dec 2, 2011 I imported the photo into Apple's Aperture program, and used its facilities to adjust the hot-spots and cold-spots in the photo. What I was particularly trying to do was lessen the blackness and lack of detail in the black outfit worn by the woman in the left. I also wanted to "sharpen" the detail of the photo, since the combination of their running motion and my own camera-shake made the focus a little "soft." But it's a JPEG image, so I couldn't sharpen it at all; and I was only able to achieve a small amount of shadow-lessening in the black outfit. C'est la vie ... I still think this is a slight improvement -- and it's also a good reminder of why I now shoot everything in RAW, and spend more time with the details of editing/post-processing... :)
I got my Note 5 last week and so far I'm really loving it. The display is amazing and I've been using the camera on this more that I did when I first got my iPhone 4s/5s.
The one feature I'm really missing from my iPhone is iMessage. I'm able to get the same features in the Whatsapp and Life360 although it isn't as convenient as having them right there in the stock messaging app. I know the shot isn't that creative but I haven't really had the interest as much since I've been working so much.

I spent five euro a month with Life360, a helpful family tracking app that saved me embarrassment when in Philadelphia a few years ago. I used it primarily to see where our car was located but it got expensive and it's not as accurate as a pure GPS tracker.
Vodafone offers V-Auto for a 60 euro fee with three euro a month paid to track you. The V-Auto dongle plugs into your car's ODB-11 or OBD2 port. It can remind you where you parked. It tracks journeys and trip times. It will tell whoever you program that you've been in a crash. And V-Auto will critique your driving, sending you a safety score based on how smoothly you proceed.
I think I'll get one just to see if I outscore my wife.

Kids are exposed to images of beauty online, on television, in magazine and advertisements everywhere. What they see is what they expect from themselves. Girls especially are affected by this type of media image. Self images are made and broken by what kids see and believe to be beauty.
