I thought the distribution of the different species on this headstone was amazing .... in particular, how the eyes of the stone carved head had been filled in with this blue grey crustose lichen ....
An incredibly 'rare find' macro. 4 different forms of lichen growing within 25 centimetres of each other.
My family has just left, had a wonderful time. Will catch up on comments over the next couple of days.

The Lichen on this rock appeared plugged in with vivid colors as the sun was setting over one of the Trail Islands. There is a tiny bit of sea water frozen in the middle of the black puddle that looks to be swallowing the island beyond.
The colors were magnificent at this moment, even highlighting the grasses and coloring them orange, and then it was gone.
While they were chopping down the evergreens in the car park the other day, they also cut loads of other trees back too. To make it worse they cut back the one tree that I always found loads of lovely lichen on. Oh well, I did at least find a substitute.
Better viewed large and thank you for your favourites. :O)
This is for Tan, who CELEBRATES a very important birthday today. Happy Birthday, my friend. Enjoy Peru.
Like all lichens, Xanthoria parietina depends on symbiotic algae or other organisms living within the enclosing thallus of the fungus. The algae perform photosynthesis to produce sugars. In exchange the fungus provides nutrients and an amenable environment. In this case the Trebouxia algae are widespread and often free-living, inhabiting places like tree branches. The tough thallus conserves moisture and grows thicker in sunlight to protect the algae from intense solar radiation.
Common orange lichen doesn't disperse itself as easily as many lichens. It relies on mites that feed on it, then deposit fertile faecal pellets at new locations.
This species likes coastal habitats. In the Waterloo area, it often appears near rivers or streams. This one grows on an ash overshadowing Cedar Creek. Unlike many lichen it tolerates pollution and heavy metals. Its success over other lichens may indicate higher pollution levels.
Thank you to everyone who visits, faves, and comments.
Can't add much to the title -- lichen on a cherry tree. Lichens can grow almost anywhere.
Thank you for looking. Isn't God a great artist?
(012/365) Best viewed Large. I believe these to be Black Tar Lichen (which coats the rock like tar) & Orange Lichen. Found on rocks above the tideline on Baginbun beach.
I take lots of pictures of moss and lichen, but then I don't put them on Flickr because I'm not sure they interest anyone. But I still like these miniature worlds on fenceposts and rocks.
Common orange lichen (Xanthoria parietina) growing on a poplar tree bark.
Złotorost ścienny (Xanthoria parietina) rosnący na korze topoli.
A macro closeup look at green lichen forming its intricate patterns on a granite rock at the summit of Carn Liath.
At long last she's done it. I have been after a good macro photo of the lichen that covers two of the trees in the car park. Up until today it seems to have had a dislike of being photographed!!
Thank you for your favourites. :O)
Lichens are non-parasitic and don’t harm any plants they grow on. In fact, they’re useful to other wildlife, offering nesting material for birds, and food and shelter to lots of invertebrates
good to go
Colourful lichen decorates this tree at the waterfront in Belle River, Ontario. Lichens are unique organisms consisting of a symbiosis of fungus and algae. Tough and resilient, they are able to quickly recover once favorable conditions return in some of the most difficult environments on earth.
Lichen are a symbiotic (some say parasitic) combination of fungus and algae/cyanobacteria. The fungi provide a stable envoronment and essential minerals. The leaflike algea and/or cyanobacteria provide the fungus with sugars via photosynthesis.
