Smart female Red-bellied Woodpecker seeking protection from a brutally cold northerly wind.
Common year-round resident and bird-feeder visitor.
Western views of Mt. Hood are densely forested, but not so from the east. The view here from across a harvested wheat field.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Last September, shortly after arriving here in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, I took this photo at Leeward Beach, during twilight.

Māui is the second largest Hawaiian island. It is loved for its world famous beaches, views of migrating whales and the magnificent sunrises and sunsets.
Lahaina Harbor on the leeward (west) side of the island was once notorious for harboring illegal whaling ships, but is a popular visitor destination today.
This Red-tail Hawk sits on the leeward side of the tree, seeking shelter from the brutal winds and freezing temps.

Top down shot of reeds in Lake Alexandrina, South Australia.
The calm still water on the left sheltered by the reeds, in a mini lagoon, and the right is the open water of the lake.
Some lovely shades of greens and yellows.
This lone tree sits isolated a long distance from others on undulating terrain in Yellowstone National Park.
We encountered 2 bison on this hike into a lesser traveled part of the park, and one human. My kind of place - wide open and views far into the distance.
The first bison we saw from a good distance and were able to navigate our way without close encounter. The second one was a surprise on the return trip. Karen was in front watching where she put her feet on the rocky trail so as to not stumble and fall. I was behind with my head always up and looking outward for animals. As i turned back to look forward i saw a rather large bison resting on its belly only about 30 yards in front of Karen. I yelled, "Karen, 1 o'clock!" She looked up and stopped short. Our friend suddenly stood up straight up and stared at us with a curious look. We immediately retreated and wandered up through thick brush off-trail in the general direction of our intended travel.
Shirley Heights, Antigua, Leeward Islands
"Bay in the sun, stall from the shiver
Run just for fun, run like a winner
Lost to the swell, stand and deliver
My coins in the well, arrows in my quiver
Half ounce of lead, sunk to the bottom
I pray to the dead that love's not forgotten"
Love in the Harbour - The Bees (2007)
In 1704, the British Royal Navy began building English Harbour, which lies within the natural safe haven of bays on the southwestern coast of the Caribbean island of Antigua. The construction carried on for much of that century, with what is now known as Nelson’s Dockyard eventually becoming a famous navy base. Little did General Shirley know that the garrison built atop the 500ft promontory overlooking the harbour would become the preeminent party venue of modern Antigua. Every Thursday and Sunday, the ruined fort at Shirley Heights is a cacophony of reggae, steel drums and rum-soaked camaraderie. The sunset viewpoint is arguably Antigua’s finest, and a pilgrimage for the emaciated ocean rowers competing in the 3000 mile annual race across the Atlantic, which starts in La Gomera and ends so fittingly in English Harbour. A belated congratulations to @teampeninsula and all the teams who completed the 2021/2022 race.
It was cold and windy so we paddled on the east of this point of land along the north shore of the St. Lawrence at sunset. We tried to paddle past the point but the cold wind blew us back.
Soufrière Hills, Exclusion Zone, Montserrat, Leeward Islands
“Paradise Lost”
In July 1995, the dormant volcano known as Soufrière Hills on the idyllic Caribbean island of Montserrat erupted so suddenly and violently that the life was never the same again. They said the sea boiled for three nautical miles around the island, as millions of tons of mud and lava buried the once resplendent Georgian capital of Plymouth. To this day and following further eruptions, most of the island is an exclusion zone, uninhabited and uninhabitable. This photograph was taken from a helicopter, which are permitted to fly over the exclusion zone. The abandoned villas and sugar mills that dot the slopes are being reclaimed by nature, giving the foothills a ghostly countenance. In his epic poem of 1667, Paradise Lost, John Milton captured the essence of the forces whose power is beyond our comprehension: “Into this wild Abyss / The womb of Nature, and perhaps her grave / Of neither sea, nor shore, nor air, nor fire / But all these in their pregnant causes mixed / Confusedly, and which thus must ever fight / Unless the Almighty Maker them ordain / His dark materials to create more worlds”.
