Lytham Windmill is situated on Lytham Green in the coastal town of Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England. It is of the type known as a tower mill and was designed for grinding wheat and oats to make flour or bran. The mill was built on Lytham marshes around 1805 on land leased by the local landowner and squire to miller Richard Cookson. Wikipedia The building to the right of the windmill was formerly the lifeboat station and was opened in 1863.
A Utah Railway coal train marches down the Thistle Line Change, approaching Diamond Fork on a toasty July 3, 1991 afternoon in the Wasatch. Gold and blue SD40Ms No. 9011, 9003, 9007, and 9015 are from of a fleet of 13 units, on short-term lease from MotivePower, Inc. of Boise, Idaho.
Leased Rarus Railway EMD GP9 No. 106 leads a Montana Western Railway freight through Deer Lodge on September 9, 1995. In the background is the former Milwaukee Road depot now serving as a church. Deer Lodge was at one time division headquarters for Milwaukee Road before the railroad abandoned its Montana lines west of Miles City in 1980.
In mid-1977, due to a shortage of power, the Santa Fe went on a leasing spree which resulted in some colorful consists. On July 3, 1977, C&NW SD45 937, CN GP40 4007 and Santa Fe GP7/slug set 1310-121, wind around Houlihan's Curve at the foot of Edelstein Hill just west of Chillicothe, Illinois, with train 113. The GP7/slug set is en route to Argentine, Kansas, for maintenance. Photo by Joe McMillan.
After uploading my shot the other day of the Detour Qualifying Train at South Royalton, I figured I should take some time to shoot the real moves. The sole purpose of going all the way up there is not for the mediocre leased power, but to document some daylight freight trains in places on the former CV mainline that I have scoped out from onboard for quite some time. Here we see yesterday's BDRD detour crossing the Winooski River into Williston, VT on the NECR Roxbury Subdivision.
A pair of former SP SD45s (rebuilt as SD40M-2s) works an Allentown Yard trimmer job near CP HAM. The units still wore the attractive blue, gold and white colors applied by Motive Power Industries in the early 90s.

I was at the riparian preserve yesterday and there were a few photographers standing around (all socially distanced, of course) and one guy points to theses little shore birds and asks what they are. I said, "those are least sandpipers". There was a long pause and then the guy asks, "So what's the advantage of leasing a sandpiper vs. buying one? 😂" Funny guy

Burlington Northern train 153 was rolling west on BN's East End in Berwyn in the winter of 1995.
Powered by 2 of the 100 LMX B39-8Es leased by BN, the LMX power was synonymous with Burlington Northern's roster in the late 1980s through the early 2000s.
The LMX motors have since been scattered across the country after coming off lease.

Another from this chase late last fall.
Housatonic Railroad train NX-12 is making their Sunday turn from Canaan to New Milford and back. They have six cars behind them as they curl through the woods approaching the New Milford River Trail crossing at about MP 13.7 on the old New Haven Berkshire Line main in this long telephoto view from the Boardman Road crossing.
The historic route following its namesake river (which is visible through the trees across River Road) the whole way is exceptionally scenic, but sadly none of the road's own sharply painted green and yellow HRRC units are presently in service and they rely almost entirely on leased GATX locomotives. In charge this day were GP38-2 GMTX 2328 (blt. Feb 1966 as Illinois Central GP40 number 3011) and MP15DC GMTX 229 (blt. Apr. 1982 as SOU 2408).

ILSX 1339 and 1303 sit outside of the Independent Locomotive Service shop south of Holt along the Minnesota Northern. ILSX 1339 usually works the trackage rights duties from Thief River Falls to Crookston for the Minnesota Northern, and ILSX 1303 is a former Alstom leaser, now ILS leaser. There is always something interesting at the shop here.

Another shot from back in October 2010, and we see the westbound Paynesville Sub wayfreight at the MP 110 curve east of Sedan, MN behind a leased HLCX SD60. This power held this assignment for only a short time before it was back to the usual pair of CP/SOO Geeps.
FLIXTRAIN 1243 had eight coaches on 21 September 2024 on its journey to Basel Badischer Bf. 193 443 hired from ELL was in front of it. I was able to photograph the entire length of the train at Hermannspiegel as it travelled through the so-called Vorderrhön in eastern Hesse.

One of the recently purchased ex. CITI Rail ES44AC's leads CN train 180 east at Mackay Alberta. While CN did have a number of these units on lease, the recent purchase was of a group previously leased to the BNSF
From Above, CREX 1505 leads train 406, as they are about to crest the uphill climb and start their descent down into Rothesay, New Brunswick. Another leaser, a CEFX is trailing.

Leased GATX GP38-2s #2261 and #2222 take a break in the late day sun on a quiet October evening at the port of Burns Harbor. The railroad currently leases a trio of GP38-2s from GATX and has lettered and logoed them all. #2261 is a former Grand Trunk Western (originally Detroit, Toledo & Ironton) GP38AC.
Leaser to CN, GMTX 2260 leads CN Edmundston local 578, running around their train after doing some switching at Grand Falls, New Brunswick. We arrived here just in time, to witness the awesome sunset gleaming behind the train.

HLCX 6341 gained quite a bit of fame in the mid 2010s for being a pretty much un-molested Southern Pacific SD40R still in its Speed Lettering paint job. It visited Grand Rapids a few times during those years, and here it is shown sitting in the Mickey Mouse at Wyoming yard, having just brought in D907 from Lansing.

The early days of Conrail were colorful, if nothing else. On top of all of the predecessor paint schemes that could find their way to any location on the system, lease units from Chicago & North Western, Bangor & Aroostook, Canadian National, and others were brought in to help with the aged, under-maintained and unreliable units that made of the majority of Conrail’s roster. Here a leased C&NW GP9 visits the engine terminal at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Also on the service track are an Erie Lackawanna GP35, a Penn Central GP40, and a former Lehigh Valley RS11. Although it hasn’t been renumbered/rebranded, the EL GP35 has been in the shops since the merger, as is indicated by presence of a silver box next to the short hood in the engineer’s side. This box housed equipment for PRR-style cab signals, which were required for a locomotive to lead a train on the former PRR lines.
Much like last year passenger season started with the ARR short on power. So when the barge arrived in Whittier with three leased UP SD70Ms it was a welcome relief. Before they could be put to use they would need to see some shop time. Seen here on their way to Anchorage at Potter. In the background are the Kenai Mountains. 5.22.25

EU07-1510 with Express InterCity train 3550 "Giewont" to Gdynia Główna leaves Zakopane station. During summer season PKP Intercity often uses the short term lease of locomotives to assure the traction for increased number of services daily. Jak to zwykle obserwujemy latem, PKP Intercity wzmacnia inwentarz lokomotyw krótkoterminowymi wynajmami pojazdów. I zazwyczaj to PKP Cargo jest dostawcą lokomotyw na sezon letni.
