Christmas gift from my hubby! Finally going to learn how to play an instrument at 55!!

Went to Baird Point on the University at Buffalo North Campus yesterday evening with Jeff, Sandra, and Jake, to shoot the sunset, which went quite well. However, I've been wanting to take some night shots there so I had to sneak back later that evening to do so when it was good and dark. My patience paid off.

legorevolution was curious how I did this so I made a quick video. Was I bored? Yes.

I forgot to mention, prepare to be frazzled, this can be a real headache. The bley and black wedges/wings actually were a lot more enjoyable to work with than the lower quality orange ones though.

The pretty music is DeVotchKa, The Clockwise Witness.

Mr. Ettore Porreca served in the U.S.Army during WWII as a combat photographer. When the war was over, he says he ended up in the 98th Division in Osaka in the autumn of 1945. With the occupation beginning, his assignments took him throughout Japan. He has a web page that is most unique and interesting. It is especially pertinent at this time in history when Japan is yet faced with another distaster, this one of a natural sort. His photos are definitely unique. Website...

It has been brought to my attention by a friend, Dalma, that Mr. Ettore Porreca has an orchestra and he and his musicians may be seen performing a "big band" hit. YOU WILL BE AMAZED AT HIS YOUTHFUL VOICE AND APPEARANCE...

This is the rest of the 1940 Packard that was attached to the hood ornament.

Obviously I've "adjusted" the photo a little. I got rid of the ugly campers on the left along with the dull gray sky, applied a black & white adjustment layer (thanks dutchee), and a diffuse glow. I like it and I hope you do too.

How many students of history know that he didn't really want the job. He tried to get his brother to take the position, but he opted out. When the people suggested he make the government a Constitutional Monarchy, he said no. He felt that if he was going to be the boss, he wanted to be the "big boss." Thus, in many ways, he wrote his own destiny. It was Lenin and the Bolsheviks, the Communists, who made the decision to murder the Czar, the Czar's wife and their five children, two servants and the family dog. For many years, the information about the assassination of the last Romanovs was kept a State secret, however, in 1992, the party released all of the gruesome details, photos, location, etc. The family then gained Sainthood and a royal funeral and burial. Two of the bodies were never found. It is one of history's most grizzly chapters, but it does not even touch the tip of the iceberg of many of the events in Russia's long history of death and torture of its citizens.

This is a sunset photo I shot over the summer at my aunt's cottage. I took some of my family out for a sunset boat tour of the lake and couldn't resist taking some pics.

I have since learned some new Photoshop techniques that I am now using on stuff I didn't originally know what to do with. I'm not sure I like how the foreground came out, but I like the silhouetted hill and the sky.

One of the greatest general arrives at atsugi in 1945...

A friend of mine has a website/blog where he each day posts something that he wants to learn, and the following results. In this picture he is covered with Post-it notes from head to toe in an attempt to find out how many are needed to cover him. It was quite interesting to watch.

A high-speed video coverage of the experiment can be seen here. (At the end of the video). The site is mostly in Norwegian so that's why you might not understand a single word :)

I just have to add that the smiley face was something I added in post-processing :)

AN ESSAY ON THE FREEDOM TO BUILD MONUMENTS

By Robert L. Huffstutter

When they came home from a war they did not start, but a war they won, they were ready to begin a project that lasted until they began passing away--making America the best and strongest nation on earth for freedom's sake.

They had seen the enemy, looked him in the eye and killed him!

It was a fight for our nation that would have great rewards for many decades. The rewards were reaped for their continued education through the GI bill that helped future military personnel, an education that would help them rebuild the purposes of America.

Their combat experience caused some of them severe mental problems, "shell shock" most folks said, but they didn't complain loudly, they simply adjusted to the best of their ability and helped each other, though few talked much about the bloody beaches they had seen. They found jobs, married their sweethearts left behind or found new ones; they began raising families, praying their children would not have to go to war. Yes, they prayed, many of them did, and they were proud of their memberships in neighborhood churches. They were glad to celebrate Thanksgivings, glad to lead prayer as the head of their family. They were the strenth of the American family, men of all faiths, creeds, religions. And yes, some were atheists, but they loved America nonetheless--unless they were Communists who were operatives. Some were discovered and tried, served their just dues. But most of these men were patriots, yes flag-waving men who became Shriners and members of the local Kiwanis Club or the Knights of Columbus. They were our fathers, our grandfathers, our uncles. There are enough of us left to remember them, but their numbers grow fewer as each day passes.

We remember them as the man and woman who fought for America's future either on the battlefield or the homefront. Never in the history of these United States since the Civil War had our nation suffered so many deaths and sorrow because of a battle with evil.

To prepare our relatives, the few who still remain, who fought in World War Two, there was the first world war, a battle America never really had to enter, nevetheless we did, thus some of our fathers had fathers who were veterans of a most miserable war.

Generations teach generations, and there was no shortage of volunteers when America became the enemy of two world powers in 1941. Within a period of a few short months, American men and women were sent into battle in large forces to battle for our survival and the survival of freedom. There were few debates at the time about our fight to defeat the evil empires that attacked our nation.

Through much sacrifice, the job was done. Today, almost ten years after this homeland suffered a frontal attack on our very soil at the cost of more lives lost on our military forces in what was then only a territory of the United States, we are on the eve of building a monument on the very site where we were attacked by two large planes that cost us more lives than were lost on 7 December 1941.

Is it a monument dedicated to the thousands of lives lost on that fateful day of 11 September 2001?

If it isn't, what is it and why is it being built on the very site where our homeland was attacked by a known force of evil ideologists who want to destroy our very way of life, our lifestyles, our combined variety of religious beliefs and our women and children, men and families of all races, creeds and colors.

I do know that if our men and women who fought World War Two were still in charge, such a building would never have been even considered for anything but a monument with a United States flag waving from its sphere.

No, it would never have been considered as a site for a parking lot, a Catholic Church, a Protestant Church, a Jewish Temple or an Islamic Mosque.

Might I mention that it would not have been considered as the right spot for a Bhuddist temple either, no, not in a a New York minute.

It is high time to find another location for this...memorial to whomever it is dedicated to or whatever it is about. The people have spoken and made it clear that they would prefer it be moved.

I took the suggestion of my good buddy Dutchee and made a little comic strip of Peanut and Cinnamon, my wife and I's two guinea pigs. Hope you enjoy.

As for the overall collection of images, they were taken with my Nikon D40 and my 18-55mm kit lens at 18mm focal length, with Nikon SB-600 flash. Each image was posterized in Photoshop and adjusted. Many thanks to Dutchee for teaching me how to use layers and layer masks, otherwise this would have been a huge pain in the neck. If you haven't learned how to use layers yet in Photoshop (or any other photo editing software), I suggest you learn, because it really makes the whole picture editing process a lot easier.

A "MUST READ" FOR ALL STUDENTS. It is a comparative study that should be read and compared with US history and how the two are both similar yet fundamentally different. It is a study in human values.

Like any subject that is important, some of our schools will spend an entire year on ancient Chinese history and neglect the history that will shape the future of the world, contemporary Chinese history. It would be a grand idea to start the unit in the early 1930s and study Chinese history from that date until the present. For some reason, some of our educators have created a state of near-war between our two nations because of trade relations. This should not be. A mutual understanding of how we can help the other is in order.

Went to a farm show this weekend and had the fortune of borrowing my friend Jeff's Sigma 10-20mm. This Allis-Chalmers was gorgeous sitting in the sun. It was stunning against the bright blue sky, but I thought it would look more interesting with a partial desaturation and some lens blur. Hope you enjoy.

NOBODY WANTS TO RETURN TO THE 40S, but the educations system today hardly focuses on life in the 40s, thus denying today's generation part of their heritage. There is way too much emphasis placed on political correctness, way too much focus on what a bunch of A-holes our past leaders were for doing this one group or another, etc, etc. Well, the truth of the matter is this, what is done is done, so a lot of educators should just "get over it and start teaching a little more respect for American values as they apply to the golden rule...not the religious golden rule, per se, just the golden rule that applies to common decency. Of course, this would leave one hell of a big gap in the educational system of this nation would it not?

I have been wanting to explore Forest Lawn Cemetery here in Buffalo for quite some time now. So last week Dutchee, Frosty, Zephry, and I paid them a visit.

This is a panoramic I shot with my Nikon D40, 18-55mm Nikon kit lens, and Hoya R72 infrared filter. Camera was tripod mounted and triggered via wireless remote. I took four images each overlapping by 25%, merged them in Photoshop and processed them as I normally do with IR shots.

Gilbert du Motier's portrait of the Marquis de Lafayette. Only 19 years old when he arrived in what would be America, he offered his services. After some hesitation, the men in power were convinced by Ben Franklin that the youth had contacts that would be helpful. Helpful was an understatement. It is my opinion, in light of all that he did, his presence in our nation at the time was Divine.

He became Washington's right-hand man and was eventually advanced to the rank of General in the United States Army. He was only 19 when he stepped foot on American soil, he made a very positive difference in our nation's history. There are some who say that "...without his help, American would not have won the Revolutionary War." Read about this young man and decide for yourself.

It is possible that Vincent's voyage from Hong Kong to Yokohama was onboard the Golden CIty. History will not verify this thought, so it is not information that one can rely on. Remember, all of the information about Van Gogh's trip is being created through a channeling process.

It is time to begin our history lesson. Note the General at far left. He was General Grants's right-hand staff officer and helped create the terms for the surrender of the CSA at Appomattox. FYI he was a native American, a Brigadier General--and an attorney.

This is a bottle of Wild Turkey American Spirit, which is a 15 year old bourbon that my best friend gave me as a gift for being the best man in his wedding this past weekend. It's a "Bonded" whiskey, produced as a small batch bourbon with only 12,000 bottles available in the U.S. It is quite tasty!

Details: Nikon D40, Nikon 50mm f/1.8D, three shot HDR at f/1.8, room lighting, shot against a white background.
