Here's a vertical comp of that fun little perch at Arcadia Beach. I like both versions a lot, so I'm posting this one too. I'd appreciate any feedback on which you prefer.

On a completely unrelated note, if you're looking for a good backup solution for your photos, take a look at Amazon Cloud Drive. You can store up to 5GB in Amazon's cloud, and it's completely free! And your stuff is redundantly stored to guarantee that it isn't lost. You can also pay a yearly fee for more storage. And if you buy an MP3 album from Amazon, they'll bump up your free limit to 20GB for a year. It gets kind of expensive if you have hundreds of gigs worth of stuff, but if you can keep it under 20GB, it's a great, free backup option. Now, I have to disclose that I do work for Amazon, but regardless of that, I'm going to back up my stuff in the Cloud Drive. Just thought I'd share something that I consider a very cool and useful idea!

Oh, and my second post today is also a supersized full moon....even better than yesterday's....

In an extreme effort to capture the Grand Tetons in a different way (and because it was so foggy in Jackson we couldn't even see the Tetons), my friend Joe and I deiced to go above the clouds and look back down. It took optimism to believe such a vantage point even existed, lots of convince store crackers and good snowshoes, but we made it happen. It was -23 degrees. (note: this is Not from Snake River Overlook, but from the Sawtooth range about 1.5 hours from Jackson via car and then some snowshoeing) The Tetons looked Huge from here climbing out of the clouds and I still can't believe I've never seen an image from this spot!! More to come....

Tomorrow at 10am pst I will be giving a free webinar on how I use Nik Silver Effex Pro 2 and present images in Zenfolio. Nik is limiting this webinar to 1000 people and it is almost completely full! Sign up HERE

If you are not using Silver Effex to process Black & White images you are missing out.....it is incredible!

A big thanks to www.borrowlenses.com/ , who helped me out in a big way last minute with some gear for this trip! They are really in the photographers corner. Check them out if you need to rent gear.

The number of new ways the information screen at the department of applied IT is broken, never ceases to surprize me.

I have a gazillion photo's of this tree. We visit one another briefly during my commute.

"Everyone who had serious philosophical conundra [on the subject of restoring your life from backup] just, you know, /died/, a generation before. The Bitchun Society didn't need to convert its detractors, just outlive them."

My new toy is a Nokia 770, which you can at this moment get on your doorstep for US$140. Add another $30 and get a big-ass memory chip for it, too.

Nokia released the N800 early this year, which has driven the cost of these puppies down significantly. There is not a huge difference in them, either. The N800 is slightly faster and sleeker and there's some software (like Skype) that will run on it only.

But, this is doing fine for me. I collected software and tips to make it kewl together into a single place.

It's pleasantly legible and usable as an e-book reader. I put a Zeroconf announcer and a secure-shell daemon on it.

I put a web server on it so all my gratis et libre e-books and 2GiB of music are reachable by anyone within wifi distance of me.

I have an instant-messaging program running, and if I'm on the 'Net (wifi or Bluetooth to mobile phone), I can make and receive VoIP 'phone calls. (So, lacking Skype isn't that big of a deal.)

Not that it's my bag, exactly, it emulates most of handheld game systems, and even old arcade games. The web browser is pretty good, and the RSS reader is sufficient. There's an email client, but I haven't tried it.

If the length so far of gushing enthusiasm isn't enough of a signal, I kinda like it.

Below a cap of erosion-resistant basalt, eroded channels lead down throught 1,000 ft of ancient volcanic ash to the John Day River. This ash, now turned to claystone, contains the fossils of plants and animals from 25 million years ago. --

Global Warming. Polar bears fight to survive. They fight to stay above water - there is no ice - anymore...

Care! You can do something yourself!

I was almost forgetting - do watch None like it hot!- A very pedagogic and educational short short film about global warming :-)

Notes: Trial Bay had been recognised as a safe shipping refuge from southerlies ever since its naming after the wreck of the Brig Trial in 1817. Between 1863 and 1866 some 90 ships and 243 lives were lost, forcing the NSW Colonial government to act. In 1870 Parliament voted £10,000 towards the construction of a breakwater to form a “harbour of safe refuge” at Trial Bay.

The Trial Bay Gaol was established in 1876 as an experimental Public Works Gaol where the inmates would construct the breakwater. Although work started in 1877, it was not completed until 1886 due to difficulties in working the hard stone, inconsistent funding and contractual problems.

This may be a settlement that housed the building workers on the gaol, there is evidence of stone working in the right foreground. There is also a telegraph pole and wire on the slab building in the left foreground. The gaol site is situated behind and to the photo right. The settlement appears strangely deserted, the residents may be hard at work on the gaol building.

Another view of what I believe is properly called the Walschaert Valve Gear on Grand Canyon Railway 2-8-2 No. 4960. I'm going to get serious about finding out the names of all of the parts.

This used to be the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 2-8-2 No. 4960 before the Grand Canyon Railway bought it in 1989.

If I have any of the names wrong I would appreciate corrections. Thanks.

—————————————————————————

Locomotive No. 4960 made its first official run on the Grand Canyon line on July 28, 1996. The restoration project took more than 80,000 man-hours at a cost of more than $1.5 million. The locomotive was purchased for $27,000 in 1923. A 01-A class 2-8-2 Mikado type (with 2500 horsepower and capable of speeds exceeding 70 mph), Locomotive No. 4960 was built in 1923 by Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Penn. The locomotive operated in freight and coal hauling service for the Midwestern Chicago, Burlington & Quincy (CB&Q) railroad until the late 1950s. From 1960 to 1966 the locomotive gained legendary status as one of only two steam locomotives preserved for the exclusive service of hauling special excursion trains in the Midwest. In this capacity, No. 4960 pulled trains of schoolchildren to educate them on the history of steam locomotives, gaining the nickname "Teacher." During the same period the locomotive also pulled the colorful Schlitz circus train.

Does Banksy play dice with the universe?

I don't know for sure who did this, but it's the most Banksyesque Einstein stencil I've ever seen, and who else would put Albert Einstein in a pair of corporate swoosh sneakers?

Cigarette boxes floating in deep black space, without references to context, orientation, scale or weight is the visual idea here. I mocked and repeated the shape of the boxes and typographical layout ( i.e. floating text within open space) as the siren screams, "Smoking Kills". Viewing the photograph, you will discover a lush surface texture and balance of blues and oranges complimenting the iridescence on the cellophane pack on the right. Read on at:

www.webexhibits.org/causesofcolor/15.html

to understand this physics phenomena.

DuPont bought the rights to exclusively produce cellophane in 1927 as a packing material that was moisture-proof. The cellophane version has sand entrapped as well as what looks like oils or tars, perhaps from the two filtered cigarettes.

How do you put the impact of 1.69 billion pounds of non-biodegradable used cigarette filters into any sense of perspective?

www.no-smoke.org/learnmore.php?id=731

For information on the environmental impact of cigarettes butts you might also visit:

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2697937/

In one laboratory study, the chemicals that leached from a single cigarette butt soaked in a liter of water for 24 hours released enough toxins to kill 50% of the saltwater and freshwater fish exposed for 96 hours.

So indeed, "Smoking Kills":

Yup. Video and voice are integrated into gtalk in gmail - but not yet via the gtalk stand alone client.

I remember going to the Science and Technology discovery centre (Scitech) 15 years ago and seeing an "amaaazing" and expensive device to allow video telephone calls.

As Cindi pointed out, all it needs now is screen and ap sharing functionality.
