A walking leaf…just am amazing creature! Ecuador.

Among the sightings at Shelby Farms, Memphis, Tn.

These two were hanging out and hanging upside down...The green one is a Malachite butterfly and the other is called a Jazzy Leafwing..

Doleschallia bisaltide, the autumn leaf, is a nymphalid butterfly found in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Australasia. In Australia it is also known as the leafwing.

The larvae are black, with two rows of dorsal white spots. Head with a pair of branched spines; rest of the segments with a dorsal and a lateral row of blue branched spines on each side. They feed on Artocarpus, Pseuderanthemum, Calycanthus, Ruellia, Girardina, Strobilanthus and Graptophyllum. The pupae are yellowish with numerous black spots; constricted in the middle; head produced into two points.

There are several subspecies under Doleschallia bisaltide:

Doleschallia bisaltide andamanensis Fruhstorfer, 1899

This subspecies closely resembles the Indian form, but differs in the oblique yellow band on the upperside of the forewing, which is broader and extends from the middle of the costal margin uninterruptedly to interspace 4, though it is preapically constricted. On the upperside of the hindwing there is an inner as well as an outer conspicuous subterminal narrow-black band. On the underside, this subspecies is as variable as the typical form, but the ground colour in many specimens (presumably wet-season broods) is of a richer, almost metallic green, with the basal snow-white spots defined with black lines; the ocelli in interspaces 2 and 5 seem also to be more clearly defined than in the Indian form. Antennae, head, thorax and abdomen as in malabarica.

This upside-down fellow is a tiger leafwing (Consul fabius).

The species belong to Charaxinae - the leafwings - and looking at this one, I'd say it is pretty clear where that name come from. This one likes to stay still with its wings closed and let the camouflage help it blend in with the leaves to avoid predators.

The dorsal side of the wings is more colourful in a mainly orage paintjob with parts being black and with white spots.

Three more butterflies photographed on the trail mid morning.

The less often seen one of the 2 I know in this genus. This one is in good condition and its mimicking of a leaf is clear to see.

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Arthropoda

Class: Insecta

Order: Lepidoptera

Superfamily: Papilionoidea

Family: Nymphalidae

Subfamily: Charaxinae

Tribe: Preponini

Genus: Prepona Boisduval, 1836

Species: P. laertes (Hübner, [1811])

Binomial name: Prepona laertes

Leafwings protect themselves by looking like dead leaves. I remember the first time I spotted one... only because it moved slightly. I was stunned that the dry leaf was in fact a butterfly.

Consul fabius, common name tiger leafwing, is the most common and well known species of the genus Consul of subfamily Charaxinae in the brush-footed butterfly family (Nymphalidae). It is found all over the Neotropics.

The length of the forewings reaches about 30–40 millimeters (1.2–1.6 in). The uppersides of the wings have a bright orange and black pattern, with two yellow bands across the angular forewings. The hindwings are tailed. This butterfly is part of a mimicry ring, as a matter of fact the cryptic undersides of the wings mimic a dead-leaf. The eggs are laid on the leaves of various species of Piperaceae (Piper tuberculatum, Piper auritum, Piper umbellatum, etc.), of which the caterpillars feed. The caterpillars are dark green with reddish spots along the back, while the chrysalis are pale green.

I saw a couple of orange butterflies with an unusual flight pattern before I found this one perched by the creek. Thanks to Lois for ID help. Happily this is a new species to add to my prairie Lepidoptera species set.

2 really pleasing sightings on my way to the beach. Both were new to me.

This butterfly was pointed out to me and if I had not been told would not have realised that it was a new species and an uncommon one too. It was hard to spot.

Orchid roots have bound the surface of this palm tree. An Autumn Leaf butterfly and its dark shadow accent the surface. Spanish Moss hangs down from branches above. A tapestry of Nature... a delight to the eyes!

The Silver-studded Leafwing Butterfly, also called the Marbled or Jazzy Leafwing, is one of several butterflies that camouflage themselves by closing their wings and mimicking a dead leaf.

One of the many leafwing butterflies that are well camouflaged in the appropriate setting.

On further checking it is a new species for me!

ID help appreciated. Tropical Leafwing - Anaea aidea?

When you eat through a straw, it really doesn't matter how you sit at the table.

This silver-studded leafwing (Hypna clytemnestra), one of the species which rely on camouflage to avoid predators, at least adheres to that theory and uses its yellow proboscis to feed off one of the plastic flowers used as a feeding station at the Haga Ocean butterfly house in Solna, on the north side of Stockholm, Sweden.

With its wings folded, this inconspicuous butterfly is an excellent dead leaf mimic, complete with stem. But when it spreads its wings in flight, the boldly patterned black and orange upper surfaces identify it as a member of the well-known tiger-wing mimicry complex which includes many distasteful species.

The silver-studded leafwing (Hypna clytemnestra) is one of the butterflies which are a bit on the secretive side about showing the dorsal side of thier wings. At rest, they keep them closed - which makes sense as they rely on the camouflage pattern to keep them hidden.

This one however kinda sorta opened them just a little bit, offering us a glimpse at what the other side looks like.

Cold dystopia sinks into my bones, warmth from the rays through the windows passes my skin like a displaced comfort arriving from the mouths of a misplaced household. They assured the trip scenic in route, though short in span; why has all my attention invested itself on the grains of this wooden table? I wish this ride may never end, knowing not where I will end up when my travel halts on the decision of this rumbling engine. If this journey leads me towards an adventure, why am I so afraid of what be ahead?
