Spent the better part of the day in DeKalb on a work trip in the Chicago area and took advantage of some clear but frigid weather. Here eastbound stacks pass under the coal tower on their way to Chicago on UP's Geneva Sub.

Coming back from New Zealand to San Francisco, I had a 7 hour layover in Sydney, which made the flight $400 cheaper than a straight non-stop return, I wish I could highlight the SEVEN hours and FOUR HUNDRED USA DOLLARS, but caps lock does the trick for those who bother to read the note. It was super tiring, but what would you do? It's a mystery why the airlines make you backtrack and fly you longer for a reduced price, but it was a delightful layover, the train takes you from the airport to the harbour in 15 minutes. My tripod was packed in my checked luggage, so I had to rest the camera on whatever I could and adjusted the horizon tilt later.
During a one-day layover in Anchorage on a work trip, I was able to chase this ARR work train through quite the scenery between Wasilla and Portage. This shot was a nice way to end the day after hours of chasing through the beautiful landscape spiced up by yellow trees in peak fall. Big thanks to Frank Keller for the local tips and guidance!
A six-month-old Conrail C39-8 and an SD50 have arrived at Saucon Creek with a train, and are now waiting by the yard office until an outbound train is ready.

Little Corella (Cacatua sanguinea)
Just before 6:30 this morning, after I had the coffee machine going and was getting my PC fired up for the day, I heard a racket in the front garden and went out to see a flock of eight Little Corellas taking a rest in our Golden Ash Tree. They stayed long enough for me to get some images.

As a child I was a curious little guy and I'm sure I drove my great uncle Coleman crazy with my endless questions about all of the many mysterious and interesting things in his barn. Turns out he had many types of Layovers -- mostly used to catch meddlers.

Canadian Pacific's business train had an unexpected layover in Nahant Yard on the morning of October 27, 2022. The train arrived at 0600, but no outbound crew was called until 1045 later that morning. It allowed time for plenty of roster shots and chasing other things until then.

Chesapeake & Ohio 4-8-4 614 takes a well-deserved rest at the servicing area in Cumberland, Maryland. After pulling the Chessie Safety Express up the B&O’s iconic Seventeen Mile Grade today, tomorrow, the Greenbrier will scale another notable B&O mountain crossing, Sand Patch.
Hanging out and under inspection in the otherwise empty Raritan coach yard and shop on 13 August 1987 is F40PH-2 No. 4121 with seven second generation Comet coaches.
FL9 #2002 lays over at Danbury, CT for the weekend, awaiting a Monday morning call of duty for a rush hour train to Grand Central Terminal. The former New York Central RDC at right is making a short layover between shuttle trips on the branch between Danbury and South Norwalk.
An old F40 sits in the cold at Waukegan, IL at blue hour on a frigid sub zero day. Once a common sight, the old smooth side bilevels and F40's are quickly becoming a vanishing vestige of the past around the Metra system.
The sound of steam in Clewiston, FL had finally subsided by nightfall with the conclusion of the Sugar Express’ “Sugar Eggspress” excursions for Saturday, April 8th, 2023. A passing thunderstorm left the town drenched, yet I would stick around ‘till the storm had passed to photograph something I had to put off until the end of the day.
#HLCX6341 [SD40R] and #USSC409 [GP38-2] sit at the end of a stub track by a relatively barren USSC North Shop, taking a break from operating on the SCFE Sebring Turn throughout the week. Passing car headlights along with the artificial lighting around the yard facility allowed for well lit long exposures to be taken, the photo above being the result. With the recent thunderstorm having passed through town, the slick moisture on the EMDs assists in further illuminating themselves with the passing lights on that dull April night. Come Monday, and it would be back to hauling freight for the shortline.

On February 1, 2025, BNSF units idle away the hours on BNSF's Front Range Subdivision at Longmont, Colorado. On the left are SD70MACs 9716 and 9709. On the right is BNSF GP39-2 2857 (ex-Santa Fe 3671). Longmont, 40 miles north of Denver, is on the former Colorado & Southern/CB&Q main line between Denver and Billings, Montana.
Amtrak EMD NPCU No. 406, along with three Superliner cars, are wrapped for Amtrak’s new Winter Park Express passenger service to the ski resort by sponsor CenturyLink. No. 406 is used on the east end of the 8-car train and sits in the siding at Fraser waiting to take skiers back home on the the first day of operation on January 7, 2017.
A pair of CSX Dash 8s rest at the East End of Conrail's Oak Island Yard. This power would have brought the loaded Tropicana Orange Juice Train east earlier in the morning. The units will layover in Oak Island until the westbound OJT empties are ready to depart (typically in the evening). The GE pair is joined by a set of Conrail GP38-2s at the East End. Four-year-old 7543 still wore as-delivered "stealth" paint. It would later receive both YN2 and YN3 CSX paint before being retired after a fairly long career.

Nine cormorant birds taking a break on a marker between flights. This is the only marker that I know of in Elliot Bay between West Seattle and downtown. I have been wanting to capture it for some time now but with the surrounding land it blends into the background. On this particular day a little fog seemed to help out a bit.
