The Amblève is a river in the Ardennes, province of Liège, in the Meuse basin.

The river rises in the town of Honsfeld in the municipality of Büllingen, at 640 meters above sea level. The basin is located in the High Ardennes, the highest region of Belgium. The mouth of the Amblève (in the Ourthe, which again flows into the Meuse) near Comblain-au-Pont, on the other hand, is only 120 meters above sea level. As a result, the Amblève has a very high slope. The length of the river is 90 km.

The valley of the Amblève is especially narrow, but is considered one of the most beautiful areas in the High Ardennes.

There are many recreational opportunities. Besides camping or hiking, kayaking is the main sport in the region.

Photo testimony that I took badly, badly printed, badly digitized.

We recognize from left to right, André Dierickx, Eddy Merckx at the twilight of his prodigious career, Roger DeVlaeminck, Mr. Paris-Roubaix, Freddy Maertens, Bernard Hinault on the verge of a glorious career, Didi Thurau, famous skewer!

The main favorites are the Belgians Roger De Vlaeminck, winner of the race in 1970 and winner of the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix earlier in the season, as well as Freddy Maertens, winner of the Flèche wallonne. Eddy Merckx, winner of this race 5 times is also expected, as is the French Bernard Hinault, recent winner of Gand-Wevelgem in the absence of the three Belgians.

In Mont Theux, climbed in the rain, Freddy Maertens emerges, only the five on the photo can return.

The six leaders go through the Forges together and dive into Embourg. Dierickx takes the opportunity to attack alone, chased by Hinault.

The two men will no longer be joined, taking advantage of the marking of their pursuers. In the sprint, Hinault surprised Dierickx by starting from a distance.

The hunters fail at 10 '.

This race was contested in climatic conditions unfavorable to the runners with cold and rain. Only 24 runners finish the race.

Hinault's victory is the first for a Frenchman in this event since Jacques Anquetil in 1966.

ILAN VAN WILDER sets a high pace for leader REMCO EVENEPOEL (Soudal-Quick Step).

Evenepoel has won Liège-Bastogne-Liège for the second year in a row with an impressive solo. The world champion drove - after a great job from his team - 30 kilometers away from the opposition. Tadej Pogacar was no longer among them, the Slovenian had to give up early after a fall and a broken wrist.

The unfortunate Tadej Pogacar was on paper the big challenger of Evenepoel, but after 84 kilometers he crashed heavily in a descent. The 'battle' that everyone was looking forward to did not happen. Only Tom Pidcock could keep up with the fast pace... for a while.

I found this picture from a couple of years ago, and couldn't believe that I'd not uploaded it.

Every ten hours, one woman in Australia dies from ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cancer is an insidious disease, often known as a “silent-killer” as symptoms are vague and often strike without warning. Unlike many other cancers there is no early detection test. Consequently ovarian cancer is often diagnosed in its late stages and only 20%-30% of women will survive beyond five years of diagnosis. In comparison, survival rates increase to 80-100% when ovarian cancer is detected and treated early.

The Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation is Australia’s pre-eminent ovarian cancer research body. Their goal is to raise ovarian cancer awareness and vital funds for the development of an early detection test that will save women’s lives.

They receive no government funding and rely on the support of community and business supporters to assist in driving their research forward.

Frocktober is all about raising funds and awareness. You can wear a frock just once, or do what many are doing and wear a different frock every day in October. In doing do we can help support the OCRF.

Today was my day to pop on a frock so I can do my bit. I don't have a specific page set up. If you want to contribute just visit this site:

Thank you.

And the technical details - the lovely Rachel is today wearing a brown and turquoise dress from La Redoute, teamed with high-heeled boots from Rubi Shoes.

And my arms really are that skinny.

... as if it were child's play

What a debut by REMCO EVENEPOEL in the one-day race he dreamed of as a junior. On his favorite training roads, he blasted away at La Redoute to celebrate his victory in Liège after a solo of thirty kilometers.

Guts, spectacle, personality and an improbable physique. With a memorable performance, Remco Evenepoel has finally cycled into history in the oldest classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège. His very first Monument. The first Belgian since Jean-Luc Vandenbroucke and Philippe Gilbert to win La Doyenne. The youngest winner in more than fifty years. And all this after starting a solo on La Redoute – unseen far. A win can hardly be more special, much more unique.

Remco Evenepoel (2000) is a Belgian cyclist who has been a professional since 2019 and rides for Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl. In June 2019 he won the Tour of Belgium. That same year he also won the Clásica San Sebastián, becoming European time trial champion and vice world time trial champion. To be continued...

Here's Paul Sherwen getting stuck in during the 1983 Paris-Roubaix race, surely the toughest single day classic bike race ever. As usual Paul has no helmet or track mitts even for the roughest surface of any race. He finished in the middle of the field but a year later placed 15th. So when you listen to him commentate on tv during the Tour de France remember he's done the business himself. In 1982 he rode the 584.5km. Bordeaux-Paris and finished 10th. This photo is from the excellent 'The Spring Classics' book, a must for anyone interested in professional bike racing.

I'm still not 100% sure about this outfit. I thought it looked OK last night when I wore it, but looking at the pictures in the cold light of day I'm not sure now ...

I was able to dress for my day out in London at Adam and Eve. Indeed I had the place to myself, so there wasn't anyone else to take this picture.

I should point out that this wasn't an Adam and Eve makeover; the clothes and makeup job are all my own. Thanks Josie, for letting me have the run of the place.

I do like this dress; it's not only comfortable, but flatters my figure (I think). And I love the unusual asymmetric hemline.

Normally I am poised and elegant. I'm not sure what happened here.
