VIRTLANTIS is a free resource and open community of practice for language learners and teachers in the virtual world of Second Life®. We offer free informal language learning activities for a growing number of languages including English, French, Spanish, German, Chinese, etc. All of our activities are offered free of charge by volunteer language teachers and/or native speakers.
Everyone is welcome to offer a language activity at VIRTLANTIS. We provide free resources and ongoing support. We also collaborate with and promote other language communities in Second Life.
In addition to our main island and the various social meeting points at Knowingly, we have additional locations which can be used when needed.

At the entrance of a Whole Foods store, I noticed an LCD screen advertising “Animal Welfare Certified” steaks.

The absurdity of words in the ad brought a smile. You’d think anyone who raises a sentient being for the sole purpose of killing her and selling her for parts is probably not out for her welfare. It doesn’t fare well for the cow, no matter how you slice it.
Incongruity in words and action creates violence. Another example is wearing ribbons with the words “Support Our Troops” while dispatching them to die in manufactured wars.
Wow! I must be good with words -- today I have managed to alienate two groups of people in one write-up.

Gestern besuchten wir den Berliner Dom, eines der wichtigsten Wahrzeichen im Berliner Stadtbild. Dort konnten wir die Kuppel besichtigen und einen tollen Blick auf die Stadt genießen. Später haben wir uns die Gruft angesehen, wo mehr als 100 Sarkophage sind, die zum deutschen Königtum gehörten.

Yesterday we visited the Berliner Dom, one of the main landmarks in Berlin‘s cityscape. Once there we could visit the dome and enjoy a great view of the city. Later we headed to the crypt, where we could see more than 100 sarcophagi wich belonged to the German royalty.

Yesterday we visited an eccentric contemporary art exhibition at the nGbK Museum in Kreuzberg with our summer students! Later, we enjoyed a huge variety of food at the Markthalle Neun. There were food stands from many countries around the world!
Don't forget that the Grillparty is today from 5 pm onwards at Blankenstein Park!

SPELLPUNDIT STUDENTSí WINNING STREAK CONTINUES: SUMMER 2018
SpellPundit studentsí winning streak continues! As you may know, at the 2018 Scripps Nationals, four of the top five spellers were SpellPundit Students.
2018 Scripps Spelling Bee: Karthik Nemmani (1st place), Naysa Modi (2nd place), Jashun Paluru (3rd place) and Navneet Murali (5th place) all used SpellPundit study materials.
SpellPundit students continued to win major spelling competitions this summer.
South Asian Spelling Bee (SASB)
Another SpellPundit student, Sohum Sukhatankar, won the South Asian Spelling Bee in Edison, NJ and took home a cash prize of $3,000. Sohum extensively used SpellPundit resources to prepare for this competition.
Other SASB Regional Champions and 1st Runner-Ups (Maya Jadhav, Rishik Ghandhasri, Vayun Krishna, Christopher Serrao, Srivarun Hathwar, Rohan Raja, and Nitya Kathiravan) also used SpellPundit resources to prepare for this competition.
North South Foundation (NSF)
Most of the top 10 Spelling and Vocabulary Bee ranks were achieved by SpellPundit students.
NSF Senior Spelling Bee (SSB):
North America Spelling Bee Champion Challenge (NASCC)
Most of the top spellers at the North America Spelling Champion Challenge were SpellPundit students! In both the East Coast (held in Towson, MA) and West Coast (held in Riverside, CA) competitions, both the winner and runner up were SpellPundit students. These spellers acknowledge that SpellPundit resources have been invaluable in preparing for the bees!

The universe is expanding. Galaxies, stars, everything is going farther away. Maybe they have taken this social distancing thing to heart.
My theory is that the expansion is to make room for all the new words we keep adding to the language. These new additions help us describe new ideas and new things, not all of them good.
When we say new, we don't mean words coined this morning. In the world of words, things move slowly. Some of these words have been around for decades. It's just that it takes time for them to bubble up and be noticed. When most of the words in the language are hundreds of years old, a few decades is relatively new.

🌿🐾 Volunteering Adventure in Guatemala 🇬🇹🌍
Hey friends and family! 🌺 We're thrilled to share some exciting news with you all. The Hu family is embarking on an incredible journey to beautiful Guatemala, specifically in the captivating city of Quetzaltenango, commonly known as Xela. 🌎🌿
For the next two weeks, we'll be immersing ourselves in two passions that are very close to our hearts: nature conservation and language learning. 🌿❤️
First and foremost, we'll be dedicating our time and energy to volunteering at an animal rescue center. 🐾🐥 We'll have the opportunity to contribute to the well-being of various animals, learn about their habitats, and assist in their rehabilitation. Our family strongly believes in the importance of protecting our environment and all the wonderful creatures that call it home. By participating in this initiative, we hope to inspire others to adopt more environmentally friendly practices and become passionate nature lovers themselves. 🌱🌍
In addition to our volunteering activities, we're also taking the chance to immerse ourselves in the local culture by attending Spanish lessons. 💃🎒 Being able to communicate with the locals and connect with them on a deeper level is something we value greatly. Learning their language will not only enhance our experience but also create meaningful connections with the community. 🌟
We're incredibly excited about this opportunity, and we'll make sure to document our journey through pictures and stories. Make sure to follow our updates here on Facebook, as we'll be sharing our adventures, encounters with amazing wildlife, and the progress we make with our Spanish lessons. ✨

Yesterday we visited an eccentric contemporary art exhibition at the nGbK Museum in Kreuzberg with our summer students! Later, we enjoyed a huge variety of food at the Markthalle Neun. There were food stands from many countries around the world!
