Casa Loma (Spanish for Hill House) is a Gothic Revival style house and gardens in midtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, that is now a museum and landmark. It was originally a residence for financier Sir Henry Mill Pellatt. Casa Loma was constructed over a three-year period from 1911–1914. The architect of the mansion was E. J. Lennox, who was responsible for the designs of several other city landmarks. 221
A South Okanagan landmark. This barn on the Haynes Ranch was built in 1916 to replace the original one that burned down in 1914. The ranch was on about 21,000 acres of land between Osoyoos and Oliver, British Columbia.

it is assumed that Gorinchem was founded circa 1000 CE by fishermen and farmers on the raised land near the mouth of the river Linge at the Merwede. (Home of Gorik) is first mentioned in a document from 1224 in which Floris IV granted people from Gorinchem exemption of toll payments throughout Holland.
Somewhere between 1247 and 1267, Gorinchem became property of the Lords of Arkel. At the end of the 13th century earthen mounts reinforced with palisades were built around the settlement to protect it from domination by the neighboring counties of Holland and Gelre. Half a century later real city walls were built complete with 7 gates and 23 watchtowers. Otto van Arkel granted it city rights on 11 November 1322.
Jan van Arkel had a dispute with Albert I, brother of Willem V of Holland, leading to war and subsequently to the annexation of Gorinchem to Holland in 1417. This resulted in increased trade and Gorinchem grew to be the eighth city of Holland.
On 9 July 1572, the Watergeuzen (Dutch rebels against Spanish rule) conquered the city and captured 19 Catholic priests and monks. Because they refused to renounce their faith, these priests and monks were brought to Brielle where they were hanged and were from then on known among Catholics as the Martyrs of Gorkum.
By the 16th century, the city walls were so deteriorated that they were replaced with new fortifications and eleven bastions that still are almost completely intact. The new walls were completed in 1609 and were located further from the town centre, making the city twice as large. In 1673, Gorinchem became part of the old Dutch Water Line.
The city walls had four city gates: the Arkel Gate in the north, the Dalem Gate in the east, the Water Gate in the south (where the ferry to Woudrichem was), and the Kansel Gate in the west. Of these four gates, only the Dalem Gate remains. The others were removed in the 19th century to make way for vehicular traffic. A portion of the Water Gate was preserved in the gardens of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
The Saarpolygon is a memorial to the coal mining in the Saar region, which finally ended in June 2012. The large accessible sculpture stands on the Duhamel slagheap in Ensdorf, which rises about 150 metres above the surrounding Saartal valley.
The walkable monument is about 30 metres high. The 35-metre-long transverse section is accessed from both sides by 132 steps at a height of 25 metres. The viewing platform weighs around 60 tons. The Saarpolygon is designed in such a way that it has a different shape from each direction: rectangular archway, triangle standing on the top or base, cross with horizontal line. In the ground plan it has the shape of a Z.
147 designs were submitted in the competition of ideas for the artistic implementation - the winner was the Berlin architect duo Katja Pfeiffer and Oliver Sachse.
Their design of a large walk-in sculpture, which "as a symbol of change in an abstract language of form traces a variety of mining motifs", is intended to form a gateway into the future in the eyes of the beholder. The formal language of the puristic steel grid construction is intended to express the inseparability of origin and future in the country and to show the classic connection of coal, steel and energy in Saarland.

Das Saarpolygon ist ein Denkmal zur Erinnerung an den im Juni 2012 endgültig beendeten Steinkohlebergbau im Saarrevier. Die begehbare Großplastik steht auf der Bergehalde Duhamel in Ensdorf, die sich rund 150 Meter über das umliegende Saartal erhebt. Das begehbare Denkmal ist rund 30 Meter hoch. Zu dem rund 35 Meter überspannenden Querstück führen von beiden Seiten genau 132 Stufen in 25 Meter Höhe. Die Aussichts-plattform wiegt rund 60 Tonnen. Das Saarpolygon ist so gestaltet, dass es aus jeder Richtung eine andere Form hat: rechteckiger Torbogen, auf der Spitze oder der Basis stehendes Dreieck, Kreuz mit Querstrich. Im Grundriss hat es die Form eines Z.
Im Ideenwettstreit zur künstlerischen Umsetzung wurden 147 Entwürfe eingereicht- Sieger war das Berliner Architektenduo Katja Pfeiffer und Oliver Sachse. Ihr Entwurf einer begehbaren Großskulptur, die „als Symbol des Wandels in abstrakter Formensprache vielgestaltige Bergbaumotive nachzeichnet“, soll in den Augen des Betrachters ein Tor in die Zukunft bilden. Die Formensprache der puristischen Stahlgitterkonstruktion soll die Untrennbarkeit von Herkunft und Zukunft im Lande zum Ausdruck bringen und die klassische Verbundenheit von Kohle, Stahl und Energie im Saarland zeigen.

This landmark tree sits in the middle of a farm road intersection. Scouted it out last week and hope to get a sunset or Milky Way type image.

Position: The unique 12th-century Rocca Scaligero Castle was built on the remains of ancient Roman fortress and is an unmissable landmark of the spa resort of Sirmione on the Lago di Garda. The whole fortress is surrounded by water, which in ancient times was crucial in defending the city. It is connected to the mainland by a drawbridge. The fortress also included a fortified port. Sirmione is a comune and town located in the province of Brescia in the region of Lombardy, Italy.

The Tower Bridge is one of London’s most famous landmarks. The bridge crosses the River Thames close to the Tower of London and is an iconic symbol of London. This night photograph was taken with the beautiful sculpture, Girl with Dolphin, located near the north end of Tower bridge. There were drifting clouds that evening, which added to the atmospheric feel.

The most widely recognized landmark in Arches National Park in Utah, USA. A 'must-do hike' from the parking lot, it is the most photographed arch in the world. The original photo was one of my first submissions to Flickr (also in this Photostream). This version was taken with a Nikon F, 50mm -f1.4 Nikkor lens using Kodachrome ASA 25, about one hour before sunset. This version was processes using several modules of Topaz plug-ins. Der älteste Kirchenbau Erfurts wurde im 8. Jahrhundert grundgelegt. Anfangs diente der Dom als Bischofssitz und war während des Mittelalters bis in das frühe 19. Jahrhundert Sitz des Collegiatstifts St. Marien. 1507 erhielt Martin Luther im Dom die Priesterweihe. Der ursprünglich romanische Kirchenbau erfuhr in der Zeit der Gotik entscheidende Umbauten.
Berühmt ist der Dom wegen der Gloriosa, der mit einem Durchmesser von 2,56 Metern größten freischwingenden mittelalterlichen Glocke der Welt.
Die fünfschiffige frühgotische Hallenkirche St. Severi war im 13. Jahrhundert Stiftskirche der regulierten Augustinerchorherren. Zum kostbaren mittelalterlichen Schmuck des Innenraumes gehören zahlreiche Plastiken, der Severi-Sarkophag (von dem nach ihm benannten "Meister des Severisarkophages"), Altäre, der gotische Taufstein und das Alabasterrelief des Erzengels "Michael".
Das Ensemble von Dom und Severikirche bildet eine imposante Kulisse für die jährlich im Sommer stattfindenden Dom-Stufen-Festspiele.

Battersea Power Station è una centrale elettrica a carbone ormai in disuso situata sulla riva sud del Tamigi, a Battersea, nell’area sud-ovest di Londra. Il sito comprende due centrali singole, costruite in due fasi successive e formanti un singolo edificio. La Battersea Power Station “A” è stata costruita negli anni ’30 e la Battersea Power Station “B” negli anni ‘50. Le due stazioni sono state costruite su un disegno identico e possiedono la ben nota forma con 4 camini. La stazione è il più grande edificio in mattoni d'Europa e si distingue in suo stile Art Deco e per le finiture interne e l'arredamento. La stazione poteva fornire fino a un quinto del fabbisogno elettrico di Londra. La stazione ha cessato di produrre energia elettrica nel 1983, ma nel corso degli ultimi 50 anni è diventato uno dei più noti punti di riferimento di Londra. La stazione deve la sua celebrità a numerose apparizioni culturali, tra cui la copertina dell’album “Animal” Pink Floyd del 1977 nella quale la stazione è stata fotografata con un maiale gonfiabile rosa che fluttua tra i due camini anteriori.
Battersea Power Station is a decommissioned coal-fired power station located on the south bank of the River Thames, in Battersea, an inner-city district of South West London. It comprises two individual power stations, built in two stages in the form of a single building. Battersea A Power Station was built in the 1930s, with Battersea B Power Station to its east in the 1950s. The two stations were built to an identical design, providing the well known four-chimney layout. The station is the largest brick building in Europe and is notable for its original, lavish Art Deco interior fittings and decor. The station provided a fifth of London's electricity needs. The station ceased generating electricity in 1983, but over the past 50 years it has become one of the best known landmarks in London. The station's celebrity owes much to numerous cultural appearances, which include the cover art of Pink Floyd's 1977 album Animals where the station was photographed with a inflatable pink pig floating between the two front chimneys.
Snapshot with the mobile phone. It was raining, and in the photo, the fine drizzle looked like photo noise, so I removed it. However, a hint of water mist still clings to the tower.
The Berlin TV Tower (constructed between 1965 and 1969) is the tallest structure in Germany, standing at 368 m (1,207 ft), but it's not the highest building tough (this is a bank tower in Frankfurt, but compared to world famous sky scrapers, it is still small with its 259 m (850 ft) without antenna).
The tower was built by the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and was intended to be a symbol of the technological advancements of the socialist state.
Another fun fact: during the construction of the Berlin TV Tower, East Germany faced financial difficulties. To continue the project, they received financial support from West Germany. This collaboration was somewhat ironic, given the political divide between the two German states at the time.
