The Red-tailed Shrike (Lanius phoenicuroides), also called Turkestan Shrike, is a small-to-medium shrike with sandy-brown to gray-buff upperparts, a conspicuous reddish or rufous tail and rump, and a dark facial mask; females and juveniles are generally duller and more heavily marked. It inhabits dry, open country including steppe, semi-desert, agricultural land, river valleys, and areas of thorny or scattered scrub, where it hunts from exposed perches for large insects, lizards, small birds, and rodents and commonly stores surplus prey by impaling it on thorns or barbed wire. It breeds from Iran and southern Kazakhstan east through parts of Central Asia to western China, and is migratory, wintering mainly in the Middle East, Arabian Peninsula, Indian subcontinent, and parts of eastern and central Africa. It is currently classified as Least Concern. Taxonomically, the Red-tailed Shrike was formerly treated as Lanius isabellinus phoenicuroides within the Isabelline Shrike superspecies, but modern treatments such as the IOC recognize it as a separate species, alongside Daurian/Isabelline Shrike (L. isabellinus) and Red-backed Shrike (L. collurio); however, some taxonomic authorities continue to treat the complex more conservatively, so older literature and field records may use L. isabellinus for birds now assigned to L. phoenicuroides.
