Common Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) are shrubs and small trees. They grow to 5-15 m tall and have small fruit. The fruit are called haws.

The leaves are arranged in an alternating manner. They are 2-4 centimeters long and are normally clustered together. They are dark green in color. The bark is thin and smooth. It may be scaly on some trees and is grey to reddish brown in color.

The fruit is 1 centimeter in length. It is oval shaped and dark red in color. It contains a single seed. The fruit is edible and is commonly made into jams or syrups.

Several species of hawthorn have are used in traditional medicine.

The generic epithet, Crataegus, is derived from the Greek kratos "strength" because of the great strength of the wood and akis "sharp", referring to the thorns of some species. The name haw, originally an Old English term for hedge (from the Anglo-Saxon term haguthorn, "a fence with thorns"), also applies to the fruit.

For quite a while I was wondering why evb had given the name "Kratos" to one of their locos. So I checked with Wikipedia and learned that in the Greek mythology he is the synonym for power and brute force, a son of Pallas and Styx. Well, ... . Here we see Kratos emerging from the underworld, or precisely from Ebertsberg Tunnel near Schluechtern-Elm.

It is the season for colour, Nature displays and treats us with colourful leaves, seeds, nuts, berries...

Crataegus from the Greek kratos "strength" and akis "sharp", referring to the thorns of some species, commonly called hawthorn, thornapple, May-tree, whitethorn, or hawberry, is a large genus of shrubs and trees in the family Rosaceae, native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere in Europe, Asia and North America.

The name "hawthorn" was originally applied to the species native to northern Europe. The name haw, originally an Old English term for hedge, applies to the fruit.

The blossoms are white, light or dark pink, here when I drive to the coast in Spring, they are much used in East Yorkshire as hedges, it is like driving through a paradisiac flower show...

I know the leaves and berries are somewhat weather-beaten, but I love that, I find perfection boring!

The fruit, sometimes known as a "haw", is berry-like, but structurally a pome.

Hawthorns are important for wildlife in winter, particularly thrushes and waxwings; these birds eat the haws and disperse the seeds in their droppings.

hey look i posted a thing

Everything is done by me. The chest and arms are sculpted from procreate. The legs are made from card and paper. The beard is sculpted, and the axe is made from a modified rifle buttstock. Kratos would have been finished earlier, but the axe took me a long time, but I'm pretty happy with the result.

Let me know what you think!
