The City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia is a unique complex devoted to scientific and cultural dissemination which is made up of five main elements: the Hemisfèric, finished in 1995 (IMAX cinema and digital projections), the Umbracle (a landscaped vantage point and car park), the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum (an innovative centre of interactive science), the Oceanográfico (the largest aquarium in Europe with over 500 marine species) and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, (which takes care of the operatic programme). The Ágora gives the complex a multifunctional space. Along an axis of just under two kilometres that was formerly the bed of the River Turia, this complex promoted by the Generalitat Valenciana has striking and futuristical architecture, designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela – and an endless capacity for entertaining and stimulating the minds of its visitors. In its various buildings they can get to know different aspects of science, technology, nature, and art.

COEXISTENCE archistract/archinature

composite image

Today I want to share with you the first piece of a conceptual fine art architecture series that I am working

on these days. In this series I just want to question our understanding of the relationship between architecture and nature.

In my opinion, city and urban lanscape planers should work more towards a co-existence of architecture and nature in big cities

in the near future because nature is where we all came from and where we belong in the long term. Of cause it is also fundamental

to help to save our mother earth in days of rapidly rising engineering processes and global population growth rates.

LEONARDO GLASS CUBE Germany 2015

whole project in high res: www.philipgunkel.de/showroom/architektur/leonardo-glass-cube

I am so happy to finally share my latest huge architectural portfolio project with you I did back in april in cooperation with Leonardo in Bad Driburg,

Germany to extend my architectural portfolio one more time. I really loved the overall architectural design from the very first time I saw it. The all natural looking

flowing forms and curves and the white, abstract designed structures together with awesome interior light installations create a very calm and positive atmosphere.

One other highlight is the 6m tall free standing glassfacade, which was produced by Leonardo and foliated with analog medium format landscape prints that you can see from the inside.

On location I shot this building for four days plus another day for the inside. Postprocessing all 23 photos including a lot of manual blendings, color corrections

and some heavy manual pano stitchings took about two and a half month to finish, maybe about two hours a day ~ 150 hrs total. As always I am highly interested what do you think about it and feel free to share and spread the word !

The ‘glass cube’ communicates the world and personality of the brand LEONARDO and turns vision into reality. The numerously awarded design unites the brand values ‘inspiration’, ‘emotion’ and ‘quality’ in an architectonic way.

An interdisciplinary design team, the team of architects from ‘3deluxe’ designed the futuristic building for LEONARDO which consists (at first sight) of two opposing elements: a strict geometric cube and a free form made of curved, white walls, set in this cover. With the combination of architecture, interior and graphical design as well as landscaping to an integrated design concept, ‘3deluxe’ built a complex unit with futuristic charm. The design team ‘3deluxe’ formed up in Wiesbaden (Germany) in 1992, comprising of communication designers Andreas and Stephan Lauhoff, interior designer Nikolaus Schweiger and designer Dieter Brell.

Island Saga I, 2015

For sure I also captured some of these famous spots too but for me it was more about trying to explore and find places that are not overvisited by us photographers these days. I loved this beautiful calm and reduced sunset scene in the middle of nowhere on one smaller road in northern iceland. i was just looking for a place to sleep at around 11'o clock as I found myself jumping out the car trying to capture this lovely little moment.

Island Saga VI 2015

Here you go with one of my favourite shots from my iceland hiking trip overviewing an amazingly beautiful part of the southern landmannalaugr area. I had already setted up my tent just on the other side of this little peak and started a little evening climb and got rewarded with this spectacular view. Stay tuned timelapse of this scene coming soon.

Am going to give flickr a try again after some time, sorry for the long absence, hope you like this one here guys :-)

Of course I could not resist to capture this iconic perspective, Kirkjufell (Mountain) and Kirkjufellsfoss (Waterfall) simply because they just go so well together in one frame. This may be the most photographed perspective in Iceland ever, on the ground you can see lots of footsteps of all the famous landscapers from all around the world and even that this perspective is the most favourie one. The world now has another one of it yay :-)
