It was arriving exactly 30 minutes before sunset.

The Kodiak Cathedral, officially the Holy Resurrection Russian Orthodox Cathedral, is a historic Alaskan landmark established in 1794. The current building, known for its iconic blue onion domes, was constructed in the 1940s. It houses the holy relics of St. Herman, a venerated Russian monk who ministered to the local people.

The Kodiak bear inhabits the islands of the Kodiak Archipelago in southwest Alaska. It is one of the largest recognized subspecies or population of the brown bear, and one of the two largest bears alive today, the other being the polar bear.

Kodiak, often called the "Emerald Isle" or the "Island of the Great Bear," is the largest island in Alaska. It's a rugged, mountainous land dominated by lush, temperate rainforests and dramatic coastlines. I captured this Kodiak sunset after a day of hiking and viewing its plentiful wildlife.
