Koalas are not bears—they’re marsupials. Learn about koalas’ unique traits, including six opposable "thumbs,"downward-facing pouches, and a tendency to sleep nearly all day in tree branches.

Formerly killed in huge numbers for their fur, especially during the 1920s and ’30s, koalas dwindled in number from several million to a few hundred thousand. In the southern part of their range, they became practically extinct except for a single population in Gippsland, Victoria in Australia. Some were translocated onto small offshore islands, especially Phillip Island, where they did so well that these koalas were used to restock much of the original range in Victoria and southern New South Wales, Australia.

Came across this mother Koala last Friday while walking M&M. The weather was terrible, very overcast with light showers of rain and I wasn't able to get a decent capture of her and the joey which was snuggled up deep within her chest fur. She is still hanging around our area so who knows maybe another opportunity will arise

Our Sothern Koalas are larger than their northern cousins with a thicker coat of fur. They tend to me more of a brown/grey colour rather than the short grey fur of their northern cousins.

Koalas are found in the eucalyptus forests of eastern Australia. They have grey fur with a cream-coloured chest, and strong, clawed feet, perfect for living in the branches of trees! They don’t have much energy and, when not feasting on leaves, they spend their time dozing in the branches. Believe it or not, they can sleep for up to 18 hours a day!

They are only awake for a couple of hours each day so it is a bonus to get them with their eyes open

Koalas typically inhabit open Eucalyptus woodland, as the leaves of these trees make up most of their diet. Their eucalypt diet has low nutritional and caloric content and contains toxins that deter most other mammals from feeding on it. Koalas are largely sedentary and sleep up to twenty hours a day; I caught this cool Koala when it was taking a well earned nap.

North Stradbroke Island is situated across the bay from Brisbane. The exact size of the koala population there is unknown but thought to be at least 300 strong and hopefully closer to 1000. Koalas there have been faring better than on the mainland and let's hope this continues. I usually see at least one each time I visit. A wonderful sight.

Male Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) relaxing in a tree in the Australia Outback habitat of the San Diego Zoo.

Male koalas have a dark, often oily patch on their chest called a scent gland. This gland is used to mark their territory by rubbing it on trees and branches, leaving their scent for other koalas. It's a key feature for identifying male koalas, particularly during breeding season when the gland becomes more prominent and active.

San Diego is famous for having the largest koala colony as well as the most successful koala breeding program outside of Australia. Conservation status: Vulnerable

Going on with my Leftovers series. This little guy never made it into my previous animal portrait series in 2019. Don't know why. But now he's here. Hope you like it.

Koala mother with her joey

The Koala joey stays with his mum for about 1 year (6 months in her pouch and 6 months riding on her back)

Koalas spend about 20 hours sleeping every day and are only active in the night.

Christmas Lights

Poem by Emily Krauss

Christmas Lights

Shiny and Bright

You decorate Christmas Trees,

You decorate houses.

And you can be found

In the fireplace

Glowing away

Christmas Lights

You brighten up my night

Every year

In the month of December

Inside and outside

Christmas Lights

You're a joy

To see

Every Christmas season
