"Know Yourself", γνῶθι σεαυτόν (gnōthi seaut(h)on) was the text that greeted vistors to the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi in Classical Greece. One of the most famous and popular oracles in the ancient world (see here). Consulted over at least 1000 years by famous and not-so-famous alike. The last pronouncement was made to the Christian Roman Emperor Theodosius I in CE393 before he closed the sanctury; The prophesy was:-
"Tell the king; the fair wrought house has fallen.
No shelter has Apollo, nor sacred laurel leaves;
The fountains are now silent; the voice is stilled.
It is finished."
Within two years Theodosius was dead and within 20 years, the Western Roman Empire had fallen.
