An incredible find. I picked up this photo and partial invoice for $20 at an antique mall in Findlay, Ohio. The picture, taken by photographer Victor Dye, shows the residence of Samuel Slatzer at 215 South Bever Street in Wooster, Ohio. (Unfortunately, the house was demolished between 1960 and 1982.)
The invoice reveals that Slatzer paid at least $998.92 (about $20,000 in today's dollars) for building materials for the house. These materials included sash weights, window sashes, flooring, sheathing, siding, and cut lumber. The purchases occurred in November and December, though the year isn't recorded. Slatzer moved to Wooster from Franklin Township between 1910 and 1920, and judging by the house's design, I'd guess a date in the second half of the decade. The lumber and materials came from Wooster's D.C. Curry Lumber Company, which managed to hang on until 2018 and was just down the street from Slatzer's house.
What's interesting, to me, is that Samuel Slatzer evidently paid for the materials himself, rather than allowing a carpenter or builder to handle such things. He farmed before retiring and moving into his house, so it's hard to guess his construction knowhow. Did he build his own home? Or did he make the purchases on behalf of a builder, who actually did the hard work of choosing materials? Did the plans come from a pattern book? All mysteries lost to time. In any case, construction records for particular old buildings are about the hardest things to find, so I give thanks to the antiquing gods for smiling upon me!
Losing My Hair And Dwelling My Life I started losing my hair when I was in college, and by the time I turned 40 I had a pronounced bald location on the top of my head. For a long time I was self-conscious about it. Especially as a youthful person. I tried everything I could think of. Someone told me to cover my head in turmeric, and go away it there overnight. All that happened was that my head turned orange. Someone else told me that I needed to encourage circulation by spraying hot h2o on my head. I read so many crazy stories that I failed to know what I should do about losing hair. Idea: Taking care of yourself is even more important if you come down with an illness. If are not helping your body fight the illness, it will take a higher toll on your health. So I stopped doing anything strange and odd. I realized that I had to come to conditions with my hair decline, and which is what I set about to do. I talked to other men who were losing their hair early, and which is the decision they came to as well. It was nice to be able to talk to men who know what I was experiencing. I have to acknowledge, however, that even though I am becoming more comfortable with my hair decline, I would like the rest of my hair to stay on my head. To that end I have been watching what I eat, making sure I am light with my head, and brush my hair every night time. Idea: Whilst it can be difficult to eradicate styling products from your daily hair routine, it is important that you do if you want to counteract hair decline. A lot of these items contain harsh compounds that injure and kill of your hair. One of the things I like to do is to massage my scalp. That manages to relax me, whether it is helping my hair or not. I also find that cutting out stress in my life has made me feel better, whether that affects my hair or not. I think I'm better able to handle what is happening to my hair because I am dealing with stress in much healthier ways. I have considered seeing the doctor to find out whether something else is causing my hair decline, but I'm moderately sure it is just that I am a male. Periodically I look for some suggestions about what I can do for my hair, but the truth is that I'm starting to get used to the bald patch. Idea: It is possible to gradual hair decline by consuming white sesame seeds. Try eating a handful of sesame seeds in the morning. I'm even considering shaving my head, the way Vin Diesel has. I think I am going to look better if I just chop everything off on my head. I don't want to look like Kevin from "The Office", after all. Losing my hair is something that I have just had to learn to live with. I have done a great deal of soul searching about why hair is important in the first place. I know a lot of people don't want to lose their hair, but ultimately, I understood that I still have a life that is moving forward. I'm so happy that I feel so calm about losing my hair. Years back it was a major problem and I failed to know what to do. Het vaktijdschrift Schrijnwerk van PMG (Professional Media Group) reikt elk jaar de Schrijnwerk Awards uit. Dit is een prijs voor bijzondere schrijnwerkprojecten. Voor de Schrijnwerk Awards 2020 komen maar liefst 54 deelnemers in zes categorieën in aanmerking voor een felbegeerde trofee. Temidden al die professionals uit de privé-sector een opmerkelijk pluimpje op de hoed van onze gemeentelijke schrijnwerkers!
Zit-en ligbanken in duurzame padoek
Zij kregen een nominatie voor hun origineel concept van zit-en ligbanken op het Van Bunnenplein. Daar werden de schuine betonnen wanden uitgebouwd tot stijvollle zit- en ligbanken in duurzame padoek. Dit project zorgt voor een trendy straatbeeld waar de gemeente Knokke-Heist trots op is. De grootste uitdaging was om de schuine wanden voor de plaatsing opnieuw uit te passen. De onderlatten waren de basis voor alle aanbouwelementen.
Verlichte verzen van Maud Vanhauwaert
Intussen werden deze zitbanken overigens nog verfraaid met poëzie van Maud Vanhauwaert. De letters van de verzen over kunstwerken aan de kust van Knokke-Heist, zijn uitgesneden in cortenstaal. Dankzij de knowhow van de gemeentelijke elektriciens worden ze ‘s avonds prachtig verlicht met led’s.
