Saline Warrior's transformation from a three-wheeled economy car to a 150mph-plus racer in just two days is almost unbelievable, but thanks to Saunders' imagination and knowhow, this is exactly what happened to this Reliant Rialto.
When filming for the B.B.C. T.V. series Panic Mechanics, Saunders was tasked with modifying the 1989 model to win a drag race. His solution was to emulate the appearance of a classic salt lake racer, with a lowered roofline, lengthened nose cone and smooth wheel discs, while a turbocharger was fitted for filming. After a frantic two-day build, the streamlined Saline Warrior was victorious on the drag strip.
Saunders sold Saline Warrior to French speed enthusiasts Les Triplettes de Bonneville. Over four years, they built a full space-frame racing car chassis, with four wheels rather than three and a fiery 750c.c. Suzuki motorcycle engine. Saline Warrior was then shipped to America to take part in the legendary Bonneville Speed Week. Unofficially breaking the 750c.c. speed record with a run of 143mph, this unlikely racer has since topped more than 150mph.
Apart from being resprayed in team colours, Saline Warrior looks the same. When the owner bought the creation at the Beaulieu Autojumble, he had never been to Bonneville and had no thoughts of starting a race team, but it caught his imagination and Les Triplettes de Bonneville has raced there every year since 2009. They hold 29 world records and are the most successful Bonneville team to come out of France, all because of the inspiration that Saline Warrior gave them.
