As a tribute to womanhood, Busui Ajaw's work at the BAB 2024 tells a powerful narrative drawn from Akha folklore, centering on Amamata, the revered first mother and goddess-like figure embodying fertility, childbirth, and the protection of women. Through this narrative, Ajaw explores the themes of motherhood, ancestral connection, and the unwavering strength and resilience of Akha women. She subtly connects the story to the contemporary roles of women within the family, as mothers navigating the complexities of domestic life.
Since the age of 15, Busui Ajaw is a self-taught painter whose works draw from her experiences as a woman in the contemporary world, a mother, as well as her roots as an Akha hill tribe ethnic group. Born in a remote mountainous Zomia region of Myanmar to a family of shamans and artisans, Ajaw and her family were forced to flee their land and village as a young child due to a military invasion. Ajaw's practice always relates to her unique upbringing and reflects autobiographical details. She attempts to depict stories from Akha oral history and myths, traditionally, and for centuries told through songs or by village elders.
Ajaw lives and works in the border area of Chiang Rai, Thailand. Her recent exhibitions include Mother: Amamata (2023, nca | nichido contemporary art, Tokyo, Japan); Thailand Biennale Chiang Rai (2023); and Singapore Biennale (2020).
In September 2024, Ajaw's Chiang Rai studio was damaged by a flash flood. This traumatic experience has influenced some of the artworks in this exhibition.
