HERZLICH WILLKOMMEN

"Kik" is the call of the great spotted woodpecker; that is how you hear him before you (possibly) see it.

It's a Widespread black-and-white woodpecker with a range that covers much of Eurasia. Note the big white shoulder patches, extensive red on vent, and black crown. (Tricky to see here in flight..)

Male has a red nape patch; juvenile (both sexes) has a red cap. Size and bold black-and-white plumage distinctive in most of range. Inhabits almost all types of forest and woodland, parkland, gardens, even farmland with hedges and scattered larger trees. Feeds mainly on trunks and larger branches; also visits feeders. Gives a sharp “kik!”, often in series. Drums frequently, often giving a short, fast series that trails off quickly.

Kiks: when my mom takes me to work, she ALWAYS takes me out. And she takes me outside and takes nice pictures of me on the wall outside her office. And she saws "awww you're cute."

Location: Witsand beach near Misty Cliffs.

Description: On Wednesday afternoon I met up with Ilse, Kim and Gaby, for a sunset photo-shoot at the dune pools on Witsand beach.

While the others were doing their thing down by the breaking waves... I wandered off to the pools to see if I could find some magic there. This is what I found. :)
