Where the Plow Cannot Find Them is the culmination of thousands of miles, hundreds of cemeteries, countless photographs, and months of research. It is also the (hopefully) first volume of many.
While exploring the backroads and towns of the West and Midwest, I continually came across cemeteries. Sometimes I'd stop and look around, maybe take a few pictures. But as time went on, I stayed a little longer, I looked at the names, the dates, imagined stories. And finally, I brought along my 4x5 camera, and the cemeteries became my main subject.
My interest started as something on the surface. The stones themselves, as well as their settings, were interesting. The decay, the preservation, the way they lay upon the land, and how they sometimes sank into it, all caught my eye.
When I returned home and wished to share a few, I was at a loss for what to say about them. This is where the research came into things. Now I had stories, sometimes detailed and sprawling, other times hardly anything more than names.The book will be hardback, 8"x10" and have 188ish pages. It will feature 75 photos with 75 stories containing whatever information I could gather about the person buried there. It'll also include a few longer stories and a bit of background about my process.
The b&w photos were shot by me on 4x5 x-ray film. They will be in the book. Of course, the behind-the-scenes photos next to them won't be.
My plan is to design and hand-screenprint the dust jacket. While I screen print for a living and have screened various covers of paperback books in the past, this will be my first attempt at a dust jacket. I'm pretty sure I can do it, but I'm not promising anything here.
This book contains 75 of those photographs and 75 of those stories. I am based out of Washington, and so many of them come from this state. Others come from Montana, Idaho, North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Utah, Wyoming, and Oregon. Future books will feature more and different states, but Washington will always likely have a special focus for me (if for no other reason than it's easier).

I'm doing a Kickstarter campaign!
Probably. So I've been kicking around the idea of making a hardback book of the cemetery photos I've taken over the past few years. I've shared some here and there, but the vast bulk of them are unseen.
The same is true for the stories that I research and write that accompany the photographs.
I feel that these pioneers and nearly-forgotten cemeteries deserve something nice, so I'd like to make a 200ish page hardback book containing 75 or so photographs and stories.
I'm not really sure how much interest there is at this point for such a book, and I'm hoping that a Kickstarter campaign could help get the word out. I know there *is* an audience for it, I just have to find it.
This is a niche project, I realize that. Nobody's specifically asking for a book of large format photographs taken on x-ray film. And I'm keeping my expectations super low. If it gets funded, great. If it doesn't, the book is still happening, even if I'm just making a copy for myself.
That said, the price needs to be low. I can't afford to lose money on the printing, but I'm completely fine with not paying myself back for the gas, film, hours, etc. That would be a ridiculous goal.
With Kickstarter comes bonus stuff, and I'm not really sure what to do there. Not a ton of folks want prints of gravestones on their wall. So maybe I'll offer other prints or something. Maybe it'll just be about the book - keep it simple.
But that will be sorted out in due time.

Myrtle Effie Dittemore was seven years old when she died. Her grave was once surrounded by a beautiful wooden fence, which is now fallen away.
Her obituary in the October 29, 1903 edition of the Kansas City Chief reads:
Myrtle Effie Dittmore, youngest daughter of Edward and Cora Dittemore, was born in Doniphan County [Kansas] October 28, 1896; died October 19, 1903, with paralysis of the heart. She was laid to rest in the Heartville Cemetery at Guernsey, Wyoming.

Having fun with this little ant series, here’s another fun image of an ant walking across some yellow-green gerbera daisy petals with a magenta flower in the background. This image is a great example of lines, shapes, and interactions of colours but also identifies a lot of technical challenges. Read on!
The petal set-up took roughly a half an hour of tinkering to figure out. How would the two petals interact across the frame, where would the water droplets be, and how much could I depend on the surface tension of the water to bend reflections and add depth to the image? Initial attempts were made with droplets in a great number of locations, but the ant wouldn’t allow for that.
Ants walking through scenes like this are oblivious to the droplets running into them and dragging them along, often combining them together and making them into tiny puddles of water. In this arrangement, however, the ant would only walk on the top of one petal and then onto the other, never entering the region of the image where the petals overlap or walking onto the underside of the higher petal. You can see the placement of these droplets allows for stronger refractions closer to the right edge of the frame with a refraction including the petal itself becoming more dominant as the droplets reach center frame. Normally I try to have a cleaner line-of-sight to the flower in the background, but it seemed to work well enough here.
This is a focus stack of 10 frames, two of which contained the ant. When I had a strong feeling that I got the shot, I then rocked the camera forward and back slightly until the camera buffer filled (this image was shot hand-held) to gather different points of focus to extend the depth of field across the top petal and refractions. The ant is predominantly a single frame, but its middle leg closest to camera was moving so quickly that motion blur made it invisible. Feeling like that was a little odd, I took that leg from an adjacent frame and manually added it to the final image – not forgetting about the reflection as well!
Getting the ant to walk along this path was the most difficult part of this image. The third hand tool outside of the frame on the left holding the left petal in place was raised slightly higher than the petals, and the ant was just hanging out on the highest point most of the time. The entire scene is surround by water, so there was no place for the ant to go but back and forth, and still that was a challenge. I ended up heading back out to the garden to get a second ant to offer up a greater chance of success, and soon after I was able to take this image. The ants were the returned to the yet-to-bloom peonies that they were spending time on.
Shot with the Lumix S1R and 24-105 F/4 kit lens, no extra attachments or tubes. Makes a great all-around lens including macro!

Macro photos with “actors” tend to carry stronger narratives, just like this one. The hardest part of creating this image is getting the ant onto the tendril! There are a lot of ingredients that go into an image like this, so let’s start breaking down the components:
1. Water surface. The entire image is built around the premise if reflection on the surface of water, with the entire subject emerging from the surface. This is done with a square ceramic vase / planter, roughly 12” square and maybe 5” deep, filled to the brim with water.
2. Flower background. The background of the image is a vibrant gerbera daisy, half-way submerged so that its reflection feels like the second half that is under water.
3. Tendril. This is part of a passion flower vine I have growing in my gardens. It is clamped just under the surface of the water with a “Third Hand Tool”, essentially a heavy base with two alligator clips on a swivel.
4. Water droplets. Placed carefully with a hypodermic needle, these droplets refract an image of the flower in the background – the more spherical the droplet, the better it will act like a lens.
5. The ant. Found exploring the extrafloral nectaries on my peony buds, he was easy enough to bring inside.
The scene is lit with a bright LED flashlight, positioned camera right with the intent to illuminate the background a little more than the foreground. This allows for the refracted image in the droplets to appear brighter than the surface they are attached to, adding a little extra punch to the image. Lighting angle / control is important, but so too is the angle of the lens!
Stronger reflections occur when the surface of the water is perpendicular to the focal plane. This means that the closer you get to the surface of the water and shoot across it, the better your reflections will be. To make this easier, it was shot with a lens better known for its “soap bubble bokeh” but is still a good performer when stopped down, the Trioplan 100. This lens has a very small diameter barrel compared to modern lenses with large front elements and complex electronics that need room inside. Because if the smaller barrel, I can get that little bit closer to the surface of the water.
So how about that ant? It’s easy enough to capture an ant in a small container, and not terribly difficult to get the ant to start walking down a twig. That twig is then placed next to the vine tendril in the hopes that the ant will keep traveling forward. Good theory, but the tendril is so small that the ant really doesn’t care. It took many attempts before I was successful, and then we encounter another problem: The ant is oblivious to the droplets, walking right into them and globbing things up, ruining the look of the photo. It is seemingly impossible to get this ant in the position he is in with nice droplets all around, requiring them to be replaced as the ant moves around the image. This photo is actually a composite of two shots partly for the purpose of focus stacking, but also because one images had the perfect pose of the ant, but fewer droplets. The second image had more droplets, but you could only see the backside of the ant. Best of both worlds here, and no Photoshop trickery than combining two separate photos taken minutes apart to overcome the chaos created by the actor.
Shot on a Lumix S1R at ISO 1600, roughly F/13 and 1/125sec. The camera was shooting on high-speed burst to capture just the right pose but also to avoid any motion blur that would be likely at shutter speeds this slow at such a small scale. Loving what these new full-frame Lumix cameras are capable of, especially the focus peaking feature in the EVF – I can instantly tell when I’ve nailed focus, which is hard to confirm otherwise with a manual lens that has been stopped down considerably.

Goal of this Mission:
This will be a 60-90 day photoshooting expedition into the heart of the American Southwest (that my friends, followers and backers) will get to be part of as I report daily to tell stories of America and its history through its rural decay, Indian reservations, and the sprawling rugged beauty of wastelands, swamplands and plains that define the Unites States. As this story unfolds, I want to follow in the footsteps of those who came before us and find those people who are living in the present who continue to tell their story. These places will soon be gone or forever changed.
I want to be a documentarian. I want to capture what is quickly disappearing, what is there now, and start trying to interpret what the future may hold in store for usl I've made it my life's work to document these places in the Southwest for future generations who will be able to look back on my work and see what things once looked liked. I am utilizing Kickstarter to achieve some of these goals through a thorough photographic expedition that will take me further than I have been able to go before and I would like your help.
I've spent my life visiting various places in the Southwest but I have have yet to undertake such a prolonged and detailed journey such as this. According to Roadtrippers - I can complete the main route in 166 hours if I drove non-stop but I will be following many byways, tangents, dirt-roads and trails that are not on the main road. The route according to Roadtrippers is about 6099 miles not including the stretch I'm taking from Farmington, Gallup, Flagtaff, Kingman and onto Las Vegas. In total, I will be covering upwards to 9,500 miles!
In addition to what's stated above:
There's an important artist's statement that I need to add about my body of work: I will not separate the human element from the natural scenery in my landscape photography because there is no such thing as "pristine wilderness." This is a false construct because humans are a natural part of the landscape. I wish to utilize what I see photographically as a way to educate people through imagery with a more objective story of American History. There is no such thing as virgin untouched wilderness. In fact, the falsity of this myth is a by-product of Manifest Destiny that runs strong in other causes such as the Environmental Movement. We need to be aware of where this idea started at its roots!

It's Monday which means I can break out my macro lens and follow the theme over in the Macro Monday group.
Today's theme was chips and I've already got quite a few macros of various electronics projects so I wanted to do something different.
These are the counters or chips that you use in a game I funded ages ago on Kickstarter.

Following on from Mike's post Nine Ladies And A Black Santa this is the creator of a new board game entitled "Vortex Chess"
He was shooting a video for the start of crowdfunding camapign on Kickstarter to fund a King Arthur's Vortex Chess board game set in Arthurian's universe where Merlin Ambrosius have to defend Camelot and Excalibur against Medraut ap Lot and his barbaric army.

It’s a Maytag Washing Machine with an IC engine with Kickstarter!
Seen at the San Tan Historical Society's museum that's housed in an old schoolhouse building.
This old Maytag wringer style washing machine is powered by a gasoline engine. Note the kick starter pedal near the bottom, right.
This would have been quite useful on a farm or ranch that might not have been electrified yet, but had areas around the house where an engine could be fired up safely.

Originally, I was going to include the Bundeswehr Panzergrenadier as a reward option.
