that's the day i was born and hence, i had a birthday on april 9th, 2009! AHHHH!
it was a fun day. though it ended with bloatedness after drinking a soy chai at a restaurant. it was the powder mix chai, which, from experience, tends to be laden with dairy... Oh NOES! . . .
in any case, it was still fun. a guy gave me a HUGE purple cellophane wrapped basket of homemade peanut butter cookies he made himself, pretty white roses, funny balloons, and a card about BOOTYBUTTS (the card i received at work was about a toilet and poo... ironic much?)! his mom got me a to-die-for gift card to starbuck's (i whole-heartedly support the local coffee and tea shops, but sometimes, they just aren't around when you need 'em the most!)
then he and i went out to breakfast/lunch/brunch/whatever you wanna call it at T.C. Eggington's. they have great vegetarian choices... "portobellini"... yum! on the way to breakfast, we saw a mother and her tiny baby ducks by the freeway in the puddle-y canal/gutter/whatever you wanna call that. it was cool because it was my birthday and they were cute, yet odd because it was by a freeway and not in a park, or in my school's irrigation or something. them duckies must be suffering economically too, eh?
so after that, i contemplated going back home to work on a commedia dell'arte mask for theatre class, but decided to just veg and hang with this guy at his apartment (i find vegging out, doing nothing a bit difficult to do sometimes).
later on, we met up with my parents to eat dinner at the Euro Cafe in Gilbert, AZ. a great foodsie greeky place. and that's where, you know, *ahem*... the soy-chai-laden-with-dairy-omg-why-did-i-order-this fiasco happened. so after dinner, with all of us feeling like cows (even though i hardly ate anything and they ate like contestants in a hotdog eating contest), we went to Wal-Mart of all places. i'm particularly NOT a Wal-Mart fan, but since i was at Wal-Mart and it might be cheaper than at other places, i bought vanilla soy ice cream because i was magnetized/hankering for some.
we finally headed home around 11pm, after which i quickly shoved this guy out the door and kissed him goodbye, so i could heat up some of those peanut butter cookies and WHAM BAM!... inhale hot cookies n' ice cream. mmmmmmmmmm... no cake this year. and i wanted it that way. no one even sang to me either i noticed, but that's perfectly ok. it's not a crime. wait wait...i take that back: he played the weird al birthday song... so essentially, i was sung to in mp3 format. :)
oh yeah, and at work today for my 'employee birthday'... i made up fruit, granola, & yogurt parfaits for everyone. someone bought all the ingredients (i requested it instead of birthday cake), and i went right to work -- whipping up those babies during my lunch break. i was so amazed some people didn't know what a parfait was or how to make them.
well, now they know :)
suffice to say, i'm on a parfait kick now. i hadn't had one in a year before that day. soy yogurt though. yes, please. :)

Yoho Park's Natural Bridge is an impressive natural rock formation that spans the flow of the Kicking Horse River.
"The Kicking River used to flow over this rock wall, not going under. This is a view of the water dropping into it's new channel under it now. Sculpted by the erosive forces of rushing water over what had once been a waterfall, the Natural Bridge is a powerful reminder of how much influence water has in shaping the landscape. Softer rock found below the Natural Bridge's hard limestone band eroded more quickly, and fissures in the rock widened until the flow of water was diverted below the outcrop." Field.ca

Their pungent crisp aroma rises from the ground and reminds you of your childhood, raking the piles of leaves and then gleefully kicking them in dusty billows up to the sky. Raking them again is so much fun.
By the way, if you can, don't rake leaves out of your garden. Leave as much as possible to protect hibernating insects such as bumblebees and many kinds of useful wasps. Read about our friends the invertebrates here: xerces.org/ and join if you are able to
A shot I took while out walking our dog. I only had my camera with 24 - 105 on and no tripod or filters . A combine harvester was working in the next field kicking up a dust storm which was picked up in the rays of the sun from the bonus of a great sky .

Peight Store Lane, Belleville, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. Some Amish communities use kick scooters instead of bicycles to limit travel distance, preserve community separation, and follow historical precedent. Scooters restrict how far and fast a person can travel from home and family, helping members stay close to the local community. Bicycles were historically viewed as expensive status symbols or tools that could connect youth too quickly to the outside modern world.
Always worth viewing the Kicking Horse River that flows through the Natural Bridge in Yoho National Park (British Columbia).
Neenah yard is bustling with action as usual this fine summer morning. A pair of switchers are in charge of the 08:00 lead job that have started their careers on the Southern Pacific and are now earning their keep on the WC. The FLO jobs are gone off to Appleton, L2627 to Manitowoc L2829 to Shops Yard etc, and this job will swap blocks, flat switch and kick cars around the yard while dissecting and building the evening locals and drags for freights to pick up. Not many freights got through Neenah, without making a stop to set out or pick up freight...it was quite the place to stay busy and I was lucky enough to hold down the midnight switch engine a couple years later.

Canadian Pacific Railway train 250-19 kicks up freshly fallen snow, as the train negotiates Drop In Curve in Long Pond TWP, ME on 2/20/2021.
Over the winter of 2020-2021 older EMD/GMD products were assigned to Maine due to a power shortage on CP. Luckily several CMQ SD40-2F's stuck around. On this day I lucked out, with a solid set of CMQ power and no CP junk to obscure the photo.
Over the past two years, much of the fleet has sadly been repainted into the bland CP corporate paint. However, CMQ 9017 as well as a few others continue to sport the CMQ scheme. However with the entire SD40-2F fleet being rebuilt, the clock is ticking for the remaining units.
