Love seeing the return of the osprey on the beautiful Patuxent River in Southern Maryland. His Karate Kid imitation.

Karate Frog accompanied me when I walked into town this morning and I took this photo of him in one of the hallways at the palace of Ludwigsburg.

EXPLORED #53 - May 16, 2011
This shot was taken with an old Nikon 28-105 lens. Yes, the lens flare is REAL!!! I was shooting directly into the sun and it gave this really cool yellow lens flare, so I decided to keep the shot. :-) Alien Bees B1600 on camera left w/Westcott Apollo 28" softbox.
This photo was inspired by one of my favorite movies, the Karate Kid! The photo was taken as a spontaneous decision to rush outside and shoot. My wife and kids were both sighing and not happy that I grabbed my camera and lighting equipment when I asked them to let me photograph them. To make matters worse, it was dinner time! I convinced them to walk down the street with me to this school parking lot and started out shooting with the Lensbaby Sweet 35 lens. I was getting some really neat shots with that lens, but I decided that I wanted to showcase the awesome thunderstorm clouds that were rolling by us at the time. I slapped on my old trusty 28-105 lens and started shooting from different angles while the alien bee B1600 and Westcott 28" softbox were on a lightstand nearby. When I shoot with strobes, I always try to rotate around my subject to get different lighting patterns. By this point in the spontaneous photo shoot, I asked my son to do a karate kick as high as he could while I was lying on the ground shooting up at him. I happened to scoot over just a touch so that the sun was directly in the center of the frame this time. The result is what you see here. An amazing thing happened when I did this. This beautiful yellow lens flare appeared in my viewfinder and I squeezed the shutter release at the pinicle of his kick and BAM! I looked at the back of my camera and said to my wife, "We got the shot"! This was the last shot from a 15 minute photo shoot and I just knew I had something special on my memory card, so I quickly packed up my gear and rushed back to the studio to check out the image. I was shocked when I saw it at 100% and am now going to print this photo as a large poster to display in the studio. The moral of the story is that you never know when the magic will happen, but it won't happen if you don't get out there and shoot. Experiment with different ideas and most importantly, HAVE FUN!

A bike portrait before I assembled my bike. My first fixed gear project. Nine month of baying parts and fixing and trixin. The handle bar is a temporary solution in the waiting for a wooden one.
