Itchan Kala is the walled inner town of the city of Khiva, Uzbekistan. The 2.5km-long mud walls date from the 18th century, and were rebuilt after being destroyed by the Persians.

This is the view from the Kala Alm near Kufstein in Austria at sunrise. Fog in the valley and the sun coming up from behind. A few minutes later there was no sunlight at all and everything was grey. Give luck a chance and get up early.
One of three ancient fortresses built around the 4th century AD, as seen from another on higher ground. A reminder of the pre-Islamic Kushan empire which ruled this region.
Except temples there are also other things to see at the Durbar Square, like the oversized relief of the Kala Bhairab or black Bhairab, just behind the Jagganath Temple. Bhairab is Shiva in his most fearful form with six weapened arms, with an headdress and belt of skulls, trampling a corpse, symbolic of mankind's ignorance.
Bhairab can appear in 64 different , all terrifying ways. The image at the Durbar Square is cut from a single stone and brought here in the 18th century after it was found in a field north of the city.
It's believed, that who lies in front of the Bhairab, will bleed to death instantly. So, the saying ''go and tell the Kal Bhairab''

Toprak-Kala, in modern Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan, was an ancient palace city and the capital of Chorasmia in the 2nd/3rd century CE, where wall paintings, coins and archives were discovered. Its history covers a period from the 1st to the 5th century CE
I've just returned from a fabulous trip to Barra in the Western Isles of Scotland. The weather threw everything at us but at least that meant lots of drama in the skies.

Ichan-Kala (literally “internal fortress") forms the inner city of Khiva within the limits or which Khiva was in 16th—17th centuries. Ichan Kala is surrounded by the strong clay wall over 2,200 m long and 7-8 m high. The wall was fortified with semicircular towers. An arrow-shaped gallery with embrasures went along the top of the wall. Defence walls of Ichan-Kala protected Khiva till Nadir-shah's invasion in the middle of 18th century when Iranian troops took Khiva and partly destroyed the fortification system. Khiva was developed under the Qungrad dynasty. By the 20th century its area had been fifteen times as much as Ichan-Kala.
Ichan-Kala, as the historical center of Khiva was entered in UNESCO's list of World Heritage. There are more than sixty archi-tectural monuments: palaces, mosques, madrasah, minarets and mausoleums there. Kunya-Ark fortress was built in the 17th century in Ichan-Kala for khan's administration. Each of Ichan-Kala's four walls has own gates (darvaza).

Topraq Kala (o Toprak Kala) è il nome di una antica cittadella situata nella regione desertica del Karakalpakstan, nell’attuale Uzbekistan, ed un tempo capitale dell’impero Kusana. Risalente al I secolo d.C e oggi in completa rovina, la cittadella mostra ancora le sue antiche cinta murarie, il palazzo reale con la camera del trono, il tempio zoroastriano e diversi mausolei.
Topraq Kala (or Toprak Kala) is the name of an ancient citadel located in the desert region of Karakalpakstan, in present-day Uzbekistan, and once the capital of the Kusana empire. Dating back to the 1st century AD and today in complete ruins, the citadel still shows its ancient city walls, the royal palace with the throne chamber, the Zoroastrian temple and several mausoleums.

Scorpion, Kala Jengking
Scorpions are known for their scary looking sting on the tip of their tail. However they are also armed with huge pincers or pedipalps, at the front of their body. The pincers is a weapon of choice when the scorpion is hunting. The tail sting is usually used to fight off attacks, they rarely wastes their precious venom on prey. This one is a junior scorpion, the adults is black in colour.
This small scorpion is moving among the thorns of durian fruit, lucky i spotted it before grabbing the durian.
Itchan Kala au lever du soleil
Au fond, l'entrée principale de la ville historique et le monument emblématique de Khiva : Kala Minor, le minaret tronqué. Le monument le plus proche, une ancienne médersa a été transformé en musée.
Aux portes du désert du Karakorum, Khiva est l'une des plus grandes villes d'Ouzbekistan. Selon la légende, elle aurait été fondée par Sem, le fils de Noé. Au XVe siècle, Itchan Kala, la ville fortifiée fut la capitale du khanat du Khorezm.
