Batik is one of Indonesian traditional heritage long pass from one generation to next.
Hand painted fabrics, traditionally made using a manual wax-resist dyeing technique, using natural coloring. Some batik are stamped but still with natural and traditional coloring. Each regions in Java has their own motifs and patterns with different meanings and philosophy. Some patterns representing royal meaning and indicated nobility or royal lineage of a person. But most of them normally take themes from daily life, incorporating patterns such as flowers, nature, animals, folklore or people.
Batik from coastal area has more vibrant colors, compare to central areas that has more earthly color with more abstract patterns.
One fabric takes long time to finish. Some took days, some took weeks, even months.
Batik has become our national clothing that usually worn on formal occasion. Nowadays, It has become more and more popular among Indonesian. Contemporary motifs are developed, combined with modern and trendy designs. It has become more fashionable.
In 2009, UNESCO acknowledge Batik as Indonesian Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
I myself am very proud of this heritage. I like to wear Batik in casual and formal occasion. To me, Batik is a symbol of passion, dedication and persistence.
