📍 Porth Nanven🌊

As I drove into St Just on the way to Porth Nanven, I found that the village centre was closed for Lafrowda Festival. I'd never heard of this before, but apparently it's an annual arts festival.

After following a short diversion, I arrived at the cove. I pulled my camera out the bag only to find it wasn't working properly. I managed to shoot a few compositions - but I'll now have to send it away for repair. Fingers crossed it's not terminal!

📍 Gribbin Head

A bit of a graphic shot of the Daymark on Gribben Head, near Fowey.

The Gribbin Daymark was originally built as a folly by a house to be seen across the valley... basically as an ornament. It has since been used as a marker to help ships navigate.

The red & white paint makes for a striking colour contrast against the blue sky.

📍 Montana Roja, Lanzarote

A few days before, I went out for a little walk from Villa Rhodantha, Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, and found myself at the top of Montana Roja! As it was so close to where we stayed, I had to return to do some proper landscape photography.

It had been a busy day: after getting up early to shoot the Timanfaya National Park; snorkelling at Playa Chica, Puerto Del Carmen; and a Lidl shop (even on holiday you can't escape the chores!) - I had just 45 minutes from leaving our villa until sunset.

I did arrive at the top of the volcano just before sunset, but I found the best of the colour and light happened at dusk. It was probably the best sky of my trip!

Ladock Woods, taken a few months ago. It was shot in my favourite area of the woods - which I like to shoot in all seasons.

📍 Kennack Sands, Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall

I took this photo a few weeks ago, but had to sit on it until I realised how I could make it work in post processing... which turned out to be as simple as cropping it square!

On the day, I darted out between the waves which made fine tuning the composition pretty tricky - I had to snatch this shot. The full shot had too much dead space to the left of frame and no real focal point. The square crop helped to highlight the details that drew me to the scene and the centrally positioned rock became the focal point I originally intended.

I had originally planned to shoot the waves crashing through the rocks on the western beach, but when I arrived, I realised that the tide was too high. So, I had to walk around with an open mind before settling on the scene on the eastern beach (Kennack Sands is split into two beaches by a rocky promontory).

📍 Tehidy, Cornwall

The last time I photographed one of these beautiful Mandarin Ducks (also at Tehidy), it flew away pretty quickly.

This time though, it was in no hurry to get away which allowed me to capture some photos of it preening and reflection shot.

Like last time, it was a little gloomy. So, the ISO was dialled up (to 12800) - much different to my landscapes which rarely exceed ISO 400!)

📍 Tehidy Woods, Cornwall

My new interest in wildlife photography took me to Tehidy Woods last weekend.

Under a heavy grey sky, not long after the sun came up, I spotted this male Mandarin Duck. In the low light, an ISO of 12800 was required. If this was a landscape photo, I would have thrown it out due to the noise such a high ISO introduced. I managed to fix the noise a little in Lightroom.

I sought the expert opinion of Andy Mayer (instagram @andymaher_naturephotography - check out his work, it's awesome!), who encouraged me to post the picture. So, here it is!

📍 Penryn, Cornwall

I walked to some nearby woods from my house looking for deer. I saw one... but it saw me first! So, on the way home I photographed this Dunnock (Hedge Sparrow) so as not to come back empty handed!

Ma.K Round III

The PKA Schildkröte (open casque one) was my original entry on last years Ma.ktober. I just loved it, and having it on display at home inspired me to built a whole series of small powersuits.

This is last Ma.K direct derivation I built, and from now I'll be showing some really different stuff with the same fig-head powersuit vibe,

The think tank is because you can fit a Neuspotter head in pretty anything :D

Medusa

You’ll need: ½ skein of heavier yarn, snake colored scraps of worsted weight yarn, scraps of red fingering yarn, glue, fabric paint, a black Sharpie marker with an ultra fine point

Hat:

Using heavy yarn (I used Deborah Norville’s Serenity) , CO 48 st on size 9 circular needle or dpns. Make K1, P1 rib for 6 rounds, then knit in the round until it measures 5!/2” from co edge. Begin dec by K6, K2tog all around, K 1 round. Next, K5, K2tog, around followed by K round. Continue pattern of rounds until you are to the K 3, K2tog round, then skip the k only round. After K1, K2tog round, do 1 round of K2tog, then break yarn and thread through remaining st, pulling tight and weaving in ends.

Snakes:

Using size 10 dpns, CO 4 st and knit I-cord until @12” long. Kfb in each st (8st) and switch to knitting in the round. K 2 rounds. K2tog all st and return to I-cord knitting (4st). K2tog all st (2 st). Cut yarn leaving 6” tail and thread through last 2 st, pulling tight. Weave yarn through head of snake and pull needle out through neck area. Weave bottom CO yarn through bottom end of snake as well. After you’ve made several of these, throw them in your washer to felt. When you take them out, pull them to the desired length and pin in interesting, snake-y shapes to dry. My hat has 25 snakes on it, but feel free to add or subtract to your taste.

Finishing:

After you have all of your snakes, pin them around your hat and sew them on using matching thread. To make their tongues, sew on a piece of red fingering wt yarn and tie in a knot. Cut to desired length. To make them fork, dab each tongue with a small amount of glue or ModPodge, let dry, then cut tip or separate. Paint on eyes with fabric paint (I used green) and make pupil/slit with the black Sharpie.
