FEC 109 not only has unit ethanol, but a classic lashup as three GP40-2s are on the point of the lengthy train as it eases into Fort Lauderdale Yard.
Another Director's cut for Flickr; O721-05 trudges past LeJeune Road north at about 12:22 AM with FURX SD40-2 #3041, CSX C40-8W #7380, and CSX C40-9W #9042. First unit since HLCX #8145 (8/2012) of any kind of foreign power to be on the Homestead Subdivision. In its likeness, this is the first time I see FURX power - or similar rather, think the rep marks were GCFX, in about 10 years.
This Starlet has been untaxed since March 2008, although to look at it you wouldn't expect it as it still looks very well kept. It's been with its current owner since it was imported here in April 2000. Dealer tag for Vine Place Sports and Performance, a well known JDM car dealership in Durham.
O721-18 passes Oleander with GP40-2 #6085 and GP39-2 #4307, with the obligatory Miami skyline shot in part due to Ultra Music Festival happening downtown. The 1+ mile, ~100-110 car train behind it signals a positive omen for rock business.
An idle O721 poses next to European carriers such as Lufthansa and Swiss. The Lufthansa group serves Miami with 3-4 daily flights from both carriers, one of which bears the A380. Note the old telegraph pole from the SCL days. O721 was stopped here since an employee had to release the track authority given on the CSX side of the Homestead Sub, from MP SXH41.1 to SXH53.0.
Golden Spike Enterprises - Tampa Railfair - June 7/8, 2014
The consist I will be taking is waybilled for the Tampa show and on the ready track. All we'll need is an outbound crew, but that'll come on Saturday ;)... Maybe I could take NASA along for some fresh air too.......
The lashup may change over there because the dash 8 isn't PF Powered... Will definitely need a second unit so I would probably throw in some foreign power. Don't know if I'll sub in a dummy truck for the dash 8.
Just wanted to also hint to a couple minor cosmetic changes to the Intermodal and CSX fleets... could anyone spot them??
More the norm than the exception now, a midday rock train on the heels of either P092 or Tri-Rail P624. CSX K996 glides through Dania with SD50-2 #8595 and AC4400CW #391 "Spirit of Dante".
On a whim I saw my scanner lying aside and opted to bring it with my cam equipment for my errand at Daily Bread in Coconut Grove. By chance I would start hearing JG talking to K977 minutes after I turned it on, while on SR 836. Cesar told me he saw it at SW 112 ST which made me direct my mom to turn at SW 22 ST. We'd miss the shot at Coral Way, fooled by a malfunctioning grade crossing and what made me really think this turn was stupid was that they were already on 84 pinging up the DTMF switch when I got to the Palmetto. We got ahead of it at Red Rd, though and from the conversation, JG was holding Tri-Rail up for it just so it could get in before going on the law. (this won't be necessary once the MIC opens, but for now, enjoy the fact this train hauled as much ass it could). Lo and behold I finally got ahead of the train at LeJeune and caught it with this awkward tight (and cropped) angle but still great video with it at 6:45 PM behind ES44AH #800 and ES40DC 5396. 82 CYDXs behind it for what could be K996 or K950. It is rare to be able to get daylight shots of a northbound at this crossing especially late afternoon runs. Surprisingly, this wasn't the only movement as a K917 (extra ID?) was on the Lehigh. I'd see the power move at Miami Canal (7737/7870) after the errand as that would wait for Tri-Rail P683 and P685 to clear (P685 would leave as P688). Aside from all of this, nice nostalgic connection as I used to run into CSX rock on my way to the specialty food store in the good old days. Fun fact: before 2006 this crossing was gateless and probably dangerous too. Screw weekdays, looks like a better bargain to chase on the weekend! "Rock on!"
Croissant Park is one of the best places to get it in late afternoon summer light. A RA and a Blue gets this one going at 30mph for the bridge up ahead.
Carlos L. wanted some away time from the hustle-bustle of MIA and opted for FLL. He invited me with him for camaraderie/navigation as I usually screw around here a lot. While a conventional plane spotting outing, I counted it as a railfan outing (even though I left the radio in the car) since we were in clear view of both the FEC mainline to the east and to the west, via telephoto, the CSX Miami Sub. The turnout wasn't bad; we started stopped by 121 at Griffin Rd and through the maze of Tri-Rail and Amtrak, we got to see the IM on FEC move around and also CSX trains K996 and O722.
As for the airliners; FLL is fairly active around the morning and we'd be treated to the usual hunk of SWA, AirTran, JetBlue, Delta and Spirit. Here and there US Airways and United would come in and out, as well as a couple American Airlines. Highlights included a Southwest anniversary plane, Allegiant Air, Frontier, and a very elusive Tiara Air Aruba landing late in the morning.
As much of a sensitive area this is we were incident free except for the attention of a couple curious employees.
CSX lately took to the routine of running rock trains out of Krome Quarry on Saturdays. Trains can come in several different ways (be it with a rock train, gravel loads, or nothing at all) and come out with the unit full of rock.Cesar and I met up at Galloway which was unusually pitch-black to begin the expedition for this one as both of us were in the mood... and in the know (Thanks, Ted). What was unique about this Saturday was that this one did not lay over at Hialeah and leave Sunday afternoon... instead it continued north as K996-29. We would get the encore at Dania after taking a friend of his to Round Up in Davie. But before we hit the high iron, we gotta start on the industrial branch; SD70MAC # 4565 an uncommon sight here in the Miami Terminal leads YN2 cousin AC4400CW #15 with the healthy 82 car train.
Northbound midday commuter. As of fall 2013, the F40PHL-2 trailing this one is ill-fated in favor of the new BL36PHs Tri-Rail has just received.
As opposed to the last shot, on Tuesday, the car got the necessary servicing in the brakes and cooling system all taken care of.
An interesting lashup sits tied for the balance of the morning. Paul told us we were fired once Rudy sent a snapshot.
Alan Smith made a viral youtube video of this one stalling down the line, but we SFRM fans laid it low at Goddard waiting on K996 to resolve the stall. One of our hometown trains apparently had a unit go lame so Q235's power had to save it and give it a shove over the hill.
Calle ocho is one of the most nicely lit spots to get CSX action. Unfortunately after the crash it only sees one train daily. Here's a night expo, artistically manipulated for your pleasure (and mines too!)
Engines 3014 and 5228 lead a northbound 78 car rock train by Aero Squadron on an early Saturday evening. A couple of oddities: first, this is the first "Boxcar GEVO" in South Florida and on the Homestead Sub; second the fact they're running down the Sub on a Saturday; and third, the time, being 6:44 PM. Usually at this time any movement on the HS is Southbound, but this is northbound. Either way, a VERY welcome sight. FWIW I checked out Homestead proper earlier to no good avail; all warehouses still display "For Lease" that have the potential of being rail served. 29 Dec 2012
An on group tip from Tim would alert me to this daytime CSX mainline movement. I would make my way to the S.E of Dyer and wait for the Tampa bound rock train. Seen crossing SR.809(Military Trail) EMD SD70MAC's #4709 and #4786 bring CDYX steel and aluminum 4 bay hoppers past my position.
