The wildebeest also called the gnu is an antelope in the genus Connochaetes native to Eastern and Southern Africa. It belongs to the family Bovidae, which includes antelopes, cattle, goats, sheep, and other even-toed horned ungulates.

Connochaetes includes two species, both native to Africa: the black wildebeest or white-tailed gnu (C. gnou), and the blue wildebeest or brindled gnu (C. taurinus).

In East Africa, the blue wildebeest is the most abundant big-game species; some populations perform an annual migration to new grazing grounds, but the black wildebeest is merely nomadic. Breeding in both takes place over a short period of time at the end of the rainy season and the calves are soon active and are able to move with the herd, a fact necessary for their survival. Nevertheless, some fall prey to large carnivores, especially the spotted hyena.

Wildebeest often graze in mixed herds with zebra, which gives heightened awareness of potential predators. They are also alert to the warning signals emitted by other animals such as baboons.

Some illegal hunting goes on but the population trend is fairly stable and some populations are in national parks or on private land. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists both as least-concern species. – Wikipedia

5 min. @f4, ISO160..... moon about 94% illuminated..... low lying, fast moving clouds make this kinda interesting.......

40 seconds @ f4, 500 ISO.... moon about 96% full, with fast moving low clouds........ Light house at Big Tub Harbour, Tobermory.....

30 seconds, f4, 800ISO.... Val, John and myself spent the evening on the dock at Rondeau Park watching the storms in the distance, a beautiful display ....

have wanted to capture something like this, but the storms were usually too close and too wet..... tonight was a good night with storms on the horizon and clear skies above.....

with John studying the radar on his I-phone and us carefully watching the horizon, we had a 2 minute warning to retreat to the saftey of the truck, unfortunately we were 4 minutes from the truck.... extreme heavy rain and 50 mile an hour winds....

Aunque sin brillo ni valor (monetario), sera mi alhaja mas preciada.

a fiery sunset over looking Georgian Bay, near Tobermory.....

a bracketed image, 2 stops apart, hand blended, in an attempt to brings some detail into the foreground.....

82 seconds @ f4, 160 ISO...... moon about 96% full, with fast moving low clouds........ Light house at Big Tub Harbour, Tobermory.....

One of the most photographed light houses, because of easy access :)

Here is Val's take and Nathans with some history links....

2 min. @ f4..... yet another fun evening at the beach...... Val and I had the pleasure of meeting-up with Jocelyn for this evenings shoot..... it was fun to see her excitement as she captured the nights ever-changing events.....

2739 sec. @ f5..... Yet another moon-rise, a not so near street light, served to illuminate the foreground.... These are actually a bit risky, totally dark when started and stop when you feel it is enough, under expose and its just crappy, over expose and its ruined.....

One of the hardest aspects is waiting for the 45 min. noise reduction and watching the night develops, helpless to capture any of it.

Well.... this night I searched the shelves and pulled out the new K7, it has been sitting there for awhile (9 months), I guess I just wasn't done with the K20D :) So while the K7 did it`s noise reduction thing I was able to keep shooting with the K20D......

Am totally impressed with the image quality of the K7....

93 sec. @ f4, 160 ISO..... a magical evening at the lake shore..... some ice sat motionless, still firmly attached to the bottom while others drifted with the current..... captured from the pier at Erieau....

124 sec. @ f5.6.... yet another beautiful evening at the beach.... moon-rise was a bit disapointing, so we pulled out the chairs and coffee and waited to see the night develope......

62 sec. @ f5..... full-moon, flash through an umbrella.... a very damp evening on the beach, the lens would fog over in minutes, the cameras just dripping wet... but we had a great time :) Chloe was a real trouper, mosquitoes and dampness, but still she kept going :)

( shot in j-peg mode, don't ask, I wasn't real happy about that :(

2 mi. @ f4..... moon about 85%...... the wave action on Lake Erie results in an ever changing shore-line around these small creeks.....

I've seen images similar to this and thought they looked kinda cool.... well I don't live near a big city, but we do have a highway with traffic...... so with my image for a foreground and free stock photography for the background mixed together with a bit of Photo Shop... I kinda like it .....

4 minutes @ f4..... with nearly a full moon..... there was still some ice floating around, and kinda created an interesting design....

6 minutes @ f8..... moon about 95% full..... just another pleasant evening on the beach......

An October sunset at Tobermory......

moon rise ....815 second exposure... seemed like a good time to practice with some coloured gels on the flash......the structure is the remnants of a century old dock, Tyrconnel is rich in history as a major port of that time... www.elginogs.ca/Home/ancestor-indexes/online-publications...

2 min.@f4..... I know, another like so many others, but this location is so easy accessible, and you never know when the night sky may treat you to some strange happenings....

I thought this looked kinda cool, but then I'm a sucker for some nice cloud action :)

2713 seconds @ f5.6....... star-trails over Horse Lake, from this summer's camping trip to the Bruce Penninsula.... this is a few hundred yards from our campsite..... started 25 minutes before moon-rise and stopped before the moon rose above the tree line.... I had hoped for some star trail reflections, but not this time......

Another rare (for me) shot using a tripod

sunset over Rondeau Bay...... every once and a while the sky explodes with colour at sunset, this was one of those times and we were lucky enough to be there :)

30 seconds @ f4 ISO 640..... Val, John and myself spent the evening on the dock at Rondeau Park watching the storms in the distance last September....

Val and I recently took a week 'off' and escaped to Tobermory for some rest and relaxation....... on a relaxing stoll around the nearly deserted harbour we came accross these, not something a photographer could pass-by :)
