And now, your press centre is complete and ready to move to the site. As it is a temporary structure it can now simply be raised and lowered by crane onto the land around the main stadium. No foundations are required.
Two years ago, a few days before the end of 2004, I decided I would spend an hour with signs for peace and candles in the evening of New Year's Day 2005. I called it "One Hour for Peace" and made some signs with magic markers and invited some friends. I think there were six of us who walked the six or seven blocks from my house to the corner of MacArthur Blvd. and Lincoln Ave. in Oakland where we stood and waved and made peace signs for an hour. A few cars honked and a lot of people looked at us as if they couldn't figure out what the hell we were doing.
We've had people at that corner every month since--through rain, a broken foot, bad backs, and not-so-great moods. After a couple months there was a noticeable increase in people waving, flashing peace signs, and honking at us. As the months passed, sometimes people stopped to give us their email addresses so we could send them the invite for the next month or they got out of their cars to join us. Once a lady bought us hot cocoas at the 7-11 because it was cold and wet.
Sometimes it doesn't feel like much, but we keep doing it. I'm glad we do it. Tonight I found out that the little rinky-dink pocket park we stand in front of is going to be named "Peace Park" because of our gatherings. That's sweet.
Oakland isn't always an easy place to live. My area isn't too bad and sure, just up the hill it's pretty ritzy, but I hear gunshots regularly and I know that overall our city is a very dangerous place to live.
There are many people who care about our community, who want to know their neighbors. The people who come to this are some of them. We want the children who live on our streets to grow up with passion for something and to have choices and support.
My wish for 2007 is that we slow down and think of something we can do to show we care about each other and our communities.
