So there I was in the Tate Modern, wandering about looking at the art... and on the floor was a leaflet that caught my eye. It offered suggestions for R.A.O.K.....

Also known as One Canada Square. The name comes from the Canada square, the cake made with elderberries and moose extract. The story has its roots in the famous "bakery boats" which used to sail across the Atlantic between Newfoundland and London in the early nineteenth century. The boats took ice hockey pucks and maple syrup from factories in London to Canada, and returned with Canadian bakery products for the British markets.
Every bakery boat that docked at this point in London had to send their first mate out to the customs and immigration control point, and in front of three independent witnesses had to shout out the inventory of the ship. One time, environmental controls failed on the Canadian clipper "Ewt and Abewt", and practically all of the stock was destroyed by weevils. The poor first mate was forced, with great humiliation, to go to the customs desk and declare the entire surviving stock: "One Canada Square". Angry and ashamed, his captain appeared on the decks of the ship and shot the first mate, who was later buried at the spot.
This spot was named in honour of the tragic incident.

Named after a canary, which legend has it escaped from a mine in North Wales in the nineteenth century and was found in the east of London, tired, exhausted and covered in coal. Locals adopted it and tried to feed it back to health, bringing focus and purpose to an otherwise depressed community, but it was too tired and died near where it was first found, on this very spot. The building was named in its honour.
