The number of poor Indonesians, those with less than than $1.90 a day, has declined radically from 63 million in 2006 to just under 6 million in 2017, but a November 2015 report by the World Bank concluded that only the top 20% of Indonesian’s were benefiting from the country’s economic growth. Farmers like Samsul are caught in low-paying jobs as the wealth gap widens. There was great optimism the country’s poorer, rural regions, who voted overwhelmingly for Jokowi in 2014 and again in 2019, but his policies don’t appear to be benefiting them. When asked what the president is doing to help potato farmers, Samsul responds only with, “No comment”. /////
Dieng in Indonesia on the island of Java
During his first term, Indonesia’s President Widodo focused on expanding infrastructure and social programs. In March 2019 Jakarta’s first subway opened, part of a larger mass-rail transit network, and money has also poured into Indonesia’s highway system. While inaugurating a newly expanded section of the Trans Java toll road, Widodo claimed it would help people reach their destinations faster and encourage tourism. But none of this seemed to help Irsyad get back home to Dieng and visit his parents from Jakarta where he studies design. “It took 16 hours by bus”, he says unenthusiastically. “There’s no future in potatoes”, says Irsyad’s mother, Rahma, herself a potato farmer. Dieng’s farmers are facing a loosing battle, partially because of soil erosion and the overuse of fertilizers and pesticides. There are also limited markets for their produce. While Widodo’s government nationalized the world’s biggest gold and copper mine in Paupa and cut out foreign oil and gas companies to the benefit of Indonesia’s state-owned Pertamina, none of McDonald’s 170 restaurants in Indonesia serve french fries made from potatoes grown in Dieng (or anywhere else in Southeast Asia for that matter).
Tourism in Dieng is up, but probably not due to the toll road, which is more than 50 kilometers away. Nevertheless, Irsayad’s father Untoro is happy for the small uptick and the chance to earn extra cash as a driver, chauffeuring guests to see ancient Hindu temples. The family even walled up half of their spacious living room to create two additional guest rooms they rent to tourists. Rahma estimates that earnings from tourism now account for about 25% of their total income.

what would you be if you were...
1. an animal? - cat. people think I'm often a loner, stand-off-ish and independant. But once you earn my trust, I'm friendly, I show appreciation, and I like to cuddle.
2. a city? - Hartford, CT. I could have picked any smaller city, I just happened to be born in this one. I'm a city, and I think I'm rather important in what I do, but let's face it, I'm no New York or London. I'm still proud of what I am, and I'm a little bit old-fashioned, even though I'm definitely moving forward.
3. a profession? - Java Expert. Well, it's what I am, and I'm good at it, so it makes sense. Actually, I'm really not a Java expert so much as a Java decision maker, involved with the direction our company moves in as far as our Java development goes and playing a key part in any major environment change as it relates to Java. So. Yeah. (can you believe a picture came up that was a cat and java book? I found it appropriate)
4. a song? - A Little More Time - I'm not very good at coming up with appropriate songs to answer questions, or even picking what my favorite song is. But, I do like this song. It's different, not overly popular, but a little catchy. It's fun to sing along to... and sometimes, I really do just need a little more time.
5. a season? - Autumn. Not only is my favorite, it does describe me - a little chilly, but not cold, full of color, and not an "extreme" season like Summer and Winter are. I'm not Spring because I'm not quite the calm.
6. a fruit? - kiwi. Not one of the "popular" fruits, so it's a little less known. But typically those who know what it is tend to like it. It's a little rough on the outside, and much prettier on the inside.
7. a tree? - Juniper. Originally picked because my dad used to sing the song "Jennifer Juniper" to me when I was a kid, but I looked up the Juniper tree, and like some things about it, too: it has berries that are used to make different forms of alcohol (usually gin) and to flavor meat dishes. Plus, it's the most popular species of bonsai! I'm not sure what this says about me. But. It's definitely not your everyday tree, and I am not your everday Jennifer.
8. a cuisine? Diner. Once again, the tend to be unique, but they have good, comforting food... although, you can't eat all your meals there, the greasy food and milkshakes would kill you, just like it's hard to spend a lot of time with me, I'll start getting on your nerves!
9. a website? google reader. While I'm pretty cool in and of myself, I'm not that interesting without what I've learned from others.
10. a tech device? laptop. Sometimes easy to take for granted, but every once and a while you think "damn, that laptop makes my life so much better." Useful... yet cool. Great for productivity and for fun. and every once and a while it turns into a whiny bitch and crashes.
11. a room in a house? Poker room. (that's what we call it in our house) I serve a purpose, but it's a fun one. People can be more casual there, but it doesn't tend to be the entertaining room, which suits me. I don't like formal entertaining, but I like playing poker and Halo with my friends.
12. a means of transportation? Hybrid. I do my part for the environment, and I definitely care about the environment. Moving in the right direction, but still a ways to go. Plus it's technologically cool, but not bleeding edge. And I'm not some sort of public transportation because I'm independant, I like to be by myself.

Christine got me a 22" wide screen monitor for Christmas which, for some reason, has me giving the Mac Mini another go. I ended up re-installing OS X fresh and have been doing a little bit of Java development on it.
Unfortunately it's only a 1.25GHz PowerPC with 512MB RAM. It can be a bit sluggish at times.

This was an university homework of mine, writen in eclipse with Java Development Kit installed. I've written this programme on a Windows 7 with JDK installed.
Any suggestions how to solve that theme glitch on Windows 7?

At that time, Chinese support was already pretty good. Fedora Core 2 is my Java Development platform and test environment when I was in college. No one understand why I used such a 'crappy' and weird OS. Now they should understand why.
