por las paredes. por los suelos.

por las paradas. por las suelas.

¿ por las pelas. por los pelos ?

rompe sus propios esquemas.

pone a sonreír su entrecejo.

¿ podría continuar este amago de poema ?

sí, su cabeza se desabrochó del suelo.

si las alas se le queman,

llamará a los bomberos.

oh, qué original.

the great big howling is about to begin

A properly devilish Little Fear for this weeks #Colour_Collective. I had a name for him the moment I finished doodling him. I reckon Carter is quite fitting.

With special thanks

Weekly shout out to my $10 patron, Warren from IWrite. Without people like Warren, I wouldn’t be able to wake you all with my little fears and you’d probably cry a lot less in the morning than you already do.

Getting a bit cold this week in the Scottish hills as we move into Autumn, so an icy antlered Doe arrived for this weeks #Colour_Collective. Could imagine her giving a deer hunter a bit of a shock. The colour this week is Glaucous.

A wee thingy about the image quality this last month here, at the Fears. Since arriving in Scotland I’ve been on a 4G connection through my mobile in the mountains. It was generally worse than 90s dial-up. We kludged around it, but until this last few days, I haven’t been able to upload anything bigger than 200kb from home. That’s meant going so far as removing the paper texture from my drawings to reduce file size. Yeuch. Sorry if it’s given a whiff of the ugly.

I got a contractless router to take the heat off my phone. The updated version of this thing from 4Gee. Our landline in the new home was so bad we actually got a 4G aerial fitted to the house free, then a price reduction on our 4Gee monthly plan. We’re still paying about £60 a month for the net, but we’ve gone from less than 28k download speeds and zero upload speeds to about 60mb download and 15mb upload. That’s better than my old fibre optic line in London! Cripes.

So I’ll carry on with Inktober as I have been for a bit of consistency, hopefully, upload a few videos, then crack on with the great schemes for the Fears in November.

Ooo, and November! For the men, don’t forget about Movember. For the writers, don’t forget about NaNoWriMo. Anyone participating in either?

‘She fell forward. The spirals winding their way into her senses. She fell forward. Was this vertigo or?… She fell forward.’

Muddy funster she’s a scary fear. Google tells me Helixphobia is a fear of spirals. I think I gave it to myself by doodling this creepy lady. This weeks #Colour_Collective is Scheveningen Yellow Light. The wee eye dot made for a terrifying yellow. Yikes!

She’s also available as an original artwork in my Etsy store. Who doesn’t want a fear of spirals in their home, right? She’s been drawn onto 240 gsm canvas card. Inked with a Faber-Castell PITT artist pen – Black. Free first class Royal Mail worldwide delivery. I also have Leo the lioness and the Siamese kitties in my shop if a barn hugging cloud doesn’t tickle your fancy.

Stone me, there’s something fishy about this weeks horror portrait…

Kertish!

Yep, Pisces this week. While I’m between houses I’m getting some serious doodling done. At this rate, by the time I have the new home, I’ll have the astrological calendar of monsters finished.

This weeks #Colour_Collective is Seashell for which this wee evil fishy will be submitted.

Darn, Kohl, you are one creepy little bugger… Just a whole bunch of nope! Submitted for approval to this weeks #Colour_Collective. A Little Fear I’ve had since forever ago and never figured out what to do with him. Until now!

We’ll have no Princesses here. Peach for this weeks #Colour_Collective. Freshly doodled this week. Quite like the overall appearance of him.

I really like the way this Fear turned out. The colour of choice of course, for this weeks #Colour_Collective. Again, I think the colour sounds like a good name. So say hello to Vanilla.

obviously not my artwork, just my edit and words.

"I do write but I don't remember..."

I ride the 108 into the city with these two on many mornings. His hair is always immaculately gel'd and parted, and she treats her hair and makeup with the same level of care. They belong in a Ralph Lauren catalog. This was the first time I've seen them out of our normal context and his hair was disheveled while his face wore a grimace. She took his hand in hers and tried to comfort him.

Was he merely drunk? I don't know, but the following morning, he was on the bus alone with bags under his eyes. Perhaps the two had a fight that night.

A few days later, I rode an earlier bus in the afternoon to return home. The two got on the stop before mine. Instead of a suit and shirt and skirt and heels, he was in shorts and she had on a summer dress. They looked like they took a day off and were now about head to the beach.

Let's believe they went to the beach.

This weeks #Colour_Collective is Basalt Grey. I think this lovely lady was just a stone throw away from being perfect. Hah, see that, a geological pun. I just dug that up. Reminds me of a tectonic relationship I once had. There was a lot of friction between us. We both had our faults…

I thank ya…

We had teal for this weeks #Colour_Collective. I think that sounds like a nice name so let’s go with it. Teal, a new little fear. Works quite well on the cream body.

Sir Francis Drake in Samuel P. Taylor Park - when things were still fun

It wasn't supposed to rain Sunday. Living in SF, you learn to distrust the forecasts and even the sky and always are prepared for a sudden change in climate. Yet over the weekend, I eschewed this foresight in favor of traveling light and suffered.

The rain started coming down when I descended White's Hill into San Geronimo, and when the magnificent redwoods of Samuel P. Taylor welcomed me, I was soaked. Knowing that it would become a chore pulling snacks out of wet pockets, I quickly scarfed down a Lara Bar and half a Clif Bar and pushed onward to Pt. Reyes Station. Things were still fun.

However, once I got off the bike at Bovine Bakery, I turned into a shivering and soggy mess. Numb fingers reached into water-logged pockets, clumsily fishing out a wet wallet, and a shaking spoon brought soup to chattering teeth. It barely helped and I might have been better off not stopping.

Now let me point out the obvious and say that I am horrible with the cold. I love the mountains, but know better than to attempt alpine ascents. Run a fan while I'm sleeping on the hottest of summer nights and I'll still wake up with goosebumps. And usually after a break off the bike, it takes me 5-10 minutes of pedaling (and sometimes shivering) to get warm again. I just don't have the natural insulation, which probably explains my obsession with wool. However with the constant rain, the water overwhelmed all those wonderful properties of wool, and it was a challenge to stay warm.

As a result, it took me a nearly three hours to cover the pitiful 40-odd miles back home. The cold also affected my fine motor skills. Somewhere down the hill from Old Rancheria, my front wheel steered into a crack in the pavement and led me astray. Luckily a tweak of the handlebars and saddle remedied that crash because my hands were no longer nimble enough to do any more.

Oddly, it was the hills that kept me going. Those brief moments of exertion brought warmth and with the final climb over White's Hill back into Fairfax, my body stopped shivering for good. Either because the winds were more tame on that side, or because my body had given up after hours trying unsuccessfully, I don't know.

From Fairfax back to San Francisco, my brain had shut off and my eyes just blankly sought those familiar landmakrs and turns to take me back. It was desolate. The Mill Valley Bike Path was a dim ghost town populated only with crosswinds. The last people on bikes I saw were probably 40 miles back in Samuel P. Taylor. And they were probably warm and dry at home by now.

When I finally reached my house, my roommate greeted me with a bewildered look and told me I looked sickly and offered to get some coconut juice for me (much to my chagrin). He made me realize that I had consumed practically nothing for the past 75 miles: a Clif Bar, a Lara Bar, and a cup of soup. No wonder my brain had slipped into that reptilian state.

In retrospect, this was my most challenging ride yet. Physically, Nicasio is pleasant, but the combination of riding in the wind and rain alone greatly changes the landscape. And malnutrition for the remaining fourty miles was a completely new game to overcome.

Ultimately, no amount of Rapha could have eased this lesson from Sunday.

Oh bread, I'm sorry I neglected you so!

You asked for lukewarm water, but I gave you cold. You specified a cup; I approximated. You thirsted for two tablespoons of orange juice, of which I figured, a slice would suffice.

Oh bread, I’m sorry for being so inconsiderate!

I was mashing potatoes when you wanted kneading (though you never told me those peculiar). I hindered your splendid rise because my hands reached your dough too late. And afterwards I couldn’t even cover you ‘cause we had no saran wrap.

Oh bread, I’m sorry for being so absent.

By morning you were stale and cold to touch. And in that 8am rush, the oven wasn’t warm enough. Yet somehow, amidst all our failings, we turned out alright.

So bread, next time, next time I’ll tend to those kneads, rise to the occasion, and we'll make something more delectable!

See more over on the blog.
