I went Venice in October, I was told that I was very luck as the weather was very nice on that day. The sky was very clear so I could see the peaks of alpes very clear. The colours of the buildings and the blue sea and sky make this beautiful scenery.

Piazza Santa Croce is one of the main plazas or squares located in the central neighbourhood of Florence, in the region of Tuscany, Italy. It is located near Piazza della Signoria and the National Central Library, and takes its name from the Basilica of Santa Croce that overlooks the square.

The most notable features of the basilica are its sixteen chapels, many of them decorated with frescoes by Giotto and his pupils, and its tombs and cenotaphs.

It is the burial place of many illustrious Italians, such as Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Enrico Fermi, Galileo, Ugo Foscolo, Guglielmo Marconi, Luigi Cherubini, Leon Battista Alberti, Vittorio Alfieri, Gioacchino Rossini, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Lorenzo Bartolini, Pier Antonio Micheli, Bartolomeo Cristofori, Giovanni Gentile, thus it is known also as the Temple of the Italian Glories (Tempio dell'Itale Glorie).

Reburied on the spot in 1737.

Michelangelo died in 1564, the same year that another genius was born, only in another field: Galileo Galilei, who for defending the theory that the Earth revolved around the Sun (and not the other way around), was tried and condemned by the Holy Inquisition. For this reason, after his death, his body was abandoned outside the church ( flic.kr/p/SAHs1g ) for many years until finally, in 1737, the last Grand Duke of the Medici Family decided to give Galileo a dignified tomb inside the church, opposite Michelangelo.

The Basilica di Santa Croce (Basilica of the Holy Cross) is the principal Franciscan church in Florence, Italy, and a minor basilica of the Roman Catholic Church. It is situated on the Piazza di Santa Croce, about 800 meters south-east of the Duomo. The site, when first chosen, was in marshland outside the city walls. It is the burial place of some of the most illustrious Italians, such as Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, the poet Foscolo, the philosopher Gentile and the composer Rossini, thus it is known also as the Temple of the Italian Glories (Tempio dell'Itale Glorie).*

In this 3-frame panorama from atop Il Duomo di Firenze, you can see The Basilica of the Holy Cross with its prominent Star of David, to the left; the Bargello (National Museum) with Volognana Tower, in the center-left foreground; and, the Palazzo Vecchio, or Old Palace, with its clock tower bathed in green light, to the right.

To think that this city was home to Dante, Gallileo, Macchiavelli, Michelangelo, the Medici family and Bartolini is incomprehensible. Most of these are entombed in Santa Croce, while their works and their influence are displayed throughout the city.

For this shot of the cloister of the Basilca of Santa Croce I converted to B&W with an infrared setting and then used a Topaz Adjust Clarity filter to enhance the textures. Lastly, quite a bit of 'burning in' has helped keep the corners of the frame darker to hold the viewers interest in the centre of the frame.

It certainly gives it a bit more impact than the rather wishy-washy colour original. It's a post-production technique I find particularly good for shots taken in harsh midday sunlight.

Legend says that Santa Croce was founded by St Francis himself. The construction of the current church, to replace an older building, was begun on 12 May 1294 by Arnolfo di Cambio and paid for by some of the city's wealthiest families and was consecrated in 1442 by Pope Eugene IV. The building's design reflects the austere approach of the Franciscans. The neo-Gothic marble façade dates from 1857-1863. The Jewish architect Niccolo Matas from Ancona designed the church's façade, working a prominent Star of David into the composition. Matas had wanted to be buried with his peers but because he was Jewish, he was buried under the threshold and honored with an inscription.

The Basilica of the Holy Cross as seen from the Giotto bell tower at night. This is the main Franciscan church in Florence and it houses the remains of several famous Italian personalities among artists, scholars and scientists like Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, Foscolo, Gentile, Rossini and Marconi. For this reason it is known as the Pantheon of the Italian Glories.
