Mused Jimi Hendrix - an avid science fiction fan - whilst being interviewed: “You know the song … It was about going through this land. This mythical [land] … because that’s what I like to do is write a lot of mythical scenes. You know, like the history of the wars on Neptune.” Well, I’m might be a bit of a mythologist myself, though I’m no meteorologist, near as I can tell the gaseous, Jovian-like, vapor is “scud clouds” boiling overhead refracting and commingling into a mythical, Neptunesque purple haze the myriad lights from near-by Spokane International Airport and the Highline Grain facility where antecedent, former Union Pacific Dash-8 9129, meets its descendent, BNSF Dash-9 1023. Now NIWX owned 9129 and her sisters from another mother, an SD40T-2 and SD45, have brought in from CW Sub points west some 60 EWG “Scoot Train” loads of Eastern Washington wheat to be posited into Highline’s mega silos where it will be, graded, State-inspected, classified, mixed, and loaded for export into this BNSF unit grain train of which 1023 brings up the rear as its DPU on this brisk penultimate January evening of 2018. Sorry for not being too active on Flickr again. The darn research and papers took my photography life away (temporary) haha. I haven't even got a chance to get much new material either.
Spring has arrived at least :)
Yup. I do manage to get out in “ideal” weather conditions from time-to-time as on this splendid May day this year. Looking north, I’m poised on a 400-foot east bank precipice of the south-flowing Kootenai River about halfway between Katka, North Idaho and Yakt, West Montana. Though the proximate detectors can be heard on a good scanner, it’s near impossible to know when you’ll catch a train out "here." The outback of the Panhandle. There’s very little to no cell service. It’s two bits to 9, and I’ve been busy climbing over boulders, felled trees, down dropoffs to scope out the area for the past hour – probably more: easy to lose track of time when consumed with what one enjoys doing – to determine the most pleasing composition while achieving maximum image depth when one of the numerous detectors up around as many bends transmits its monotonous data and you know there’ll be some action shortly. Sure enough, an eastbound stack slowly sneaks, snakes and threads itself like a multi-colored serpent along rising crags of coniferous dense and the rippling deep blue zag-zig of the Columbia River’s uppermost 485-mile tributary below, and our wilderness walkabout is handsomely rewarded. So I got in the car, put on some #johnnycash and headed into rural #southcarolina for a #sundaydrive hoping to capture some images of #timelessamericana . #ipulledoverforthis and anything that caught my eye. The #countryroads are full of abandoned buildings, discarded automobiles, green tobacco fields and #beautifuldecay . It felt good to be On The Road and On The Run again. I couldn't help but think that this landscape hasn't changed much since Jack and Neil wandered these roads in the 50's. I'll be featuring images from my #ruralexploration this week. "There's something in a Sunday that makes the body feel alone." Well at least until my family gets back from Oaxaca.
