Afternoon on the Everglades

Everglades National Park is a 1.5-million-acre wetlands preserve on the southern tip of the U.S. state of Florida. Often compared to a grassy, slow-moving river, the Everglades is made up of coastal mangroves, sawgrass marshes and pine flatwoods that are home to hundreds of animal species. Among the Everglades' abundant wildlife are the endangered leatherback turtle, Florida panther and West Indian manatee. ― Google

Thoreau could have said the same about Photographers. A day out in Nature's Beauty is good for what ails you.

Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery

Founded in 1917, Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery provided fresh trout to the Sierra Nevada region for nearly a century.

As one of the first-ever fish hatcheries, Mt. Whitney is a representation of the region’s rich culture and history.

Though the hatchery is no longer used to hatch fish, the staff organize tours, fish feeding, and wildlife interpretation exhibits.

Inspired by the surrounding mountains, the hatchery was built to last. Construction started in late March of 1916 with the goal of completing the project in the spring of 1917. With the help of local builders, Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery opened its doors in 1917.

From day one, the hatchery boasted unmatched quality and quantity. The first trout that were hatched were from eggs collected at Rae Lakes. After collection, these eggs were transported from the collecting station to the hatchery via mule train.

During the spawning season of 1918, the hatchery staff collected golden trout eggs from Cottonwood Lakes for the first time. As the official state fish of California, Golden Trout is an impressive but rare sight. The hatchery’s golden trout hatching program was the sole source of this fish throughout the Sierra Nevada.

One final piece of information: the Hatchery was named for Mount Whitney, which is located a few miles to the south. Mount Whitney is the highest mountain in the contiguous United States... with an elevation of 14,505 feet (4,421 m). Mount Whitney is only 84.6 miles (136.2 km) northwest of North America's lowest point, Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park, at 282 ft. (86 m) below sea level.

Cerro Toco is a stratovolcano located in the eastern part of the Atacama desert in Chile's II Region (Antofagasta), approximately 6 km (4 mi) south of the border between Bolivia and Chile and 12 km (7 mi) SE of the Juriques and Licancabur volcanoes. It conforms the north eastern extreme of the Purico Complex, a pyroclastic shield made up by several stratovolcanoes, lava domes and a maar.

Cerro Toco is located in the Chajnantor Scientific Reserve, as is most of the Purico Complex. The Atacama Cosmology Telescope and the Huan Tran Telescope are located on the western side of the mountain at approximately 5,200 m (17,100 ft).

Although it is 320 meters less high and far less spectacular of a sight than it´s famous neighbour Licancabur, Cerro Toco still provides rewarding hiking opportunities. Novices can get a gentle introduction to high altitude climbing, while the views from the summit to the surrounding volcanos such as Licancabur and Lascar and beyond the Bolivian border to Laguna Blanca are breathtaking. For more experienced climbers this is still a good summit to get acclimatised for trips to one of the nearby higher mountains.

Cerro Toco has two routes:

The Southern Route has an elevation gain of about 600 meters and takes 2 to 3 hours up, 45 min down.

The Northern Route is longer with an elevation gain of about 1000 meters, taking 4 hours up.

On top of the mountains, you will see the Apachetas, piles of stones, which are offerings to Pachamama, Mother Nature. Each stone represents a problem that, when taken up the mountain, lies behind. In a pile, there are many problems of different people. Interesting is the analogy of pilasters that serve as a bridge between the sacred and the profane, between two worlds, such as church towers, totems, minarets (travel associative in travel ...).

When Costa Ricans say “pura vida,” it's a way of saying hello. For the Costa Rican people, it represents a way of life that welcomes a minimal lifestyle, celebrates good fortune, and encourages you to take things in stride.

Costa Rica is known for its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and incredible wildlife. Some of the top attractions include Arenal Volcano, Manuel Antonio National Park, La Paz Waterfalls, Papagayo Peninsula, Tamarindo beach, Rio Celeste, Monteverde Cloud Forest and Corcovado National Park. Costa Rica is also home to many unique and diverse animal species such as sloths, monkeys, birds, turtles and more.

It was during covid, so It took some convincing from my wife, but I finally caved and made the trek to Maroon Bells. I really didn't want to deal with it: masking up, waiting in line for a bus ticket, and then enduring a crowded bus ride with all my camera gear. But I'm so glad I went.

Turning away from the Maroon Bells and heading back, this is the view you get – not bad at all!

Located in a glacial valley, the 14,000-foot bell-shaped peaks truly capture the beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Anchored by a stunning reflective lake, Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak tower over the area, creating an oasis of natural wonder.

More than 300 million years of geologic activity, including sedimentation, uplift and erosion by wind, water and ice, are credited to the creation of Maroon Valley.

A reflective lake and two giant snow-striped mountaintops, named Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak, anchor a blissful panorama exemplified by a symphony of color that changes with the seasons.

A familiar sight as we drive home ... taken in January, but it could be a sunny Spring day like today .. our weather is rather strange at times!

I take these drive-by shots in part to remind me that just because they are familiar scenes, it is easy to almost forget them. This stand of trees, in the middle of a field of barley, is one of my favourites. It has survived the onslaught of Storm Arwen, with only a little damage to one side.

Happy Tree-mendous Tuesday

One of the old trees that has survived the storms of last winter. With an estimated 16 million trees lost in Aberdeenshire alone, we are still picking our way through a ruined landscape!

As every city around the world, Nottingham is a very vibrant city, lots of things to see and do, events to attend, lovely architecture, great venues to eat and drink, or watch your favourite band, for me, this was a very sad sight to see, I hope for sake of the worldwide economy we can recover from this pandemic, stay positive my flickr friends.

Considered one of the most visited attractions in Bolivia, the REA (Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina Eduardo Avaroa) is located in Provincia Sud Lípez, at the southern end of the Department of Potosí.

It is there that the country shows its wildest side: wild life that shows itself without shyness, such as flamingos, guanacos, vicuñas, pumas, Andean foxes, condor and vizcachas; striking landscapes that streak the horizon, outside the car; and archaeological and cultural experiences that set the tone for the trip through this extremely, desert and cold region.

The only dirt road is the Camino Hito-Laguna Colorada. This is the third and final day of the tour.

Any trip that takes place in this country of more than one million km², in the central sector of the continent, is always a demanding adventure of long journeys in 4×4 cars, where public transport does not arrive, or on board buses that make an endless drip through inland villages.

The climate in winter (May to August) is dry, generally with no rain during the summer (December to April). The average temperature is 3 °C (37 °F). The lowest temperatures are recorded during the months of May, June and July.

My daughter in law took this photo of me at the Bayard cutting arboretum.

I took the photo of the Butternut squash at a local supermarket yesterday.

I’ve then put it through Lightroom to highlight the colours, and then through Photoshop to add the canvas and drop shadow; then I put it through Photofunia to add the gallery effect.
