If you've known me for any length of time, you probably know that my Second Life inventory is an absolute disaster. 😂
We're talking over 200,000 items. I'm a decorator/ landscaper, it happens.
Years and years of shopping, demos I swore I'd delete, duplicate items, unpacked boxes, random notecards, and probably enough forgotten purchases to furnish an entire region.
And every time I opened my inventory with the intention of cleaning it, I'd get overwhelmed, delete about 20 things, and give up.
So I decided to do something about it.
I made Cache Compass. ❤️
It's a Windows desktop application that works alongside Firestorm to help people like me who have completely lost control of their Second Life inventories.
It finds duplicates, helps you clean out unwanted items, and lets you protect folders you don't want touched. You review what you want to remove, and those items go to your normal Second Life Trash.
And just to give you an idea of how bad my inventory actually was...
On my very first cleanup, I got rid of 5,000 duplicate landmarks. FIVE THOUSAND. 😂
Not clothes. Not shoes. Not hair.
LANDMARKS.
Apparently, I've been collecting directions to places like they're rare antiques.
And that was just my first pass!
But honestly, as much as I love being able to clean things out, one of my absolute favorite features turned out to be something else entirely.
THE SEARCH.
You know when you KNOW you own something, but you can't remember what the creator named it? Or you've got a dress buried somewhere in a folder inside another folder inside ANOTHER folder?
Cache Compass searches item names AND the folder paths they're stored in.
So even if the actual item doesn't have the word you're looking for in its name, you can still find it if that word appears in the folder path.
Here's an example from my own inventory:
I searched for "reborn top" using the normal inventory search and got ONE result.
Cache Compass found over 1,100.
ONE versus 1,100!
And there's a Search Only option, so you can use it to find things without doing any cleanup at all.
That's honestly one of the reasons I'm so excited about it. I built it to help me get rid of things, but it also helps me find the things I actually want to KEEP.
And after months of development, testing, fixing things, breaking things, and fixing them again, it's already released and people are using it!
I'm really proud of this project. It's been a huge learning experience, and there were definitely nights I wondered what I'd gotten myself into.
But I made something that I genuinely think can help people, and I wanted to share it with my friends here before you stumbled across it somewhere else.
If you're curious, I've included the website, Marketplace store, and some videos below so you can see it in action.
And if you'd rather check it out inworld, Cache Compass also has a permanent kiosk at The Wasteland Event!

And now I have to ask...
HOW MANY ITEMS ARE IN YOUR INVENTORY?
Seriously, tell me your number. I need you to make me feel better about myself.
Love,
Lucy ❤️
