We have wiped out many of the pests and scourges which afflicted humanity. We have advanced science to the edges of the inexplicable and hoisted technology to the sun itself... In brief, we are prosperous, lively, successful, inventive, diligent — but, nevertheless and notwithstanding, something is wrong and we know it :-)

The Western Jackdaw is a smaller member of the crow family.

From research and experiments it is clear that these are very intelligent birds.

Anyone with bird feeders can observe how inventive they can be when trying to get to the food.

They are capable imitators of the human voice and of calls of other birds.

The striking architectural design of More London has enhanced the London skyline, with its glass sided structures maximising the light and river views. The space between the buildings has been imaginatively used to create elegant open spaces including More London Place and More London Riverside, equivalent in size to Hanover Square and Parliament Square respectively. These two breathtaking open spaces are linked by a narrow flowing stream called The Rill, which is just one of many inventive water features to be found and enjoyed on the Estate.

"The Empty Bottle String Band originally formed to play a one-time stint at a local farmers market, but have already reached new heights in popularity all over the Southeast US. They specialize in playing toe-tapping, highly danceable traditional Appalachian music and are known for their upbeat fiddle tunes and feel-good music. Their impressive stage presence is coupled with a delightfully self-effacing strength and confidence in their music. Their sound is inventive, while still staying close to the old time string band tradition of the 1930's."

Created for the "Award Tree" Group's challenge, "Red & White Fudge".

It's great to be challenged to step outside of one's usual palette and take on one that's so restricted ( red & white ). Limitations like that are some of the greatest spurs to creativity as one is forced to work inventively without resort to a lot of the usual options. So it was great to take a day and dig in to produce a set of 5 images to fit the "Award Tree" challenge theme.

This and the four following "red & white" images all work with black as the "magic third". It seemed impossible for me to create anything of much interest using just red and white. And sometimes my reds verge on oranges due to their being made so transparent that they lost most of their saturation. Or, in some cases they were mixed so far into the black that they became almost browns. So, in the end, a very wide range of reds were used.

The title for the image is the subtitle to David Sylvian & Ryuichi Sakamoto's song, "Heartbeat ( Tainai Kaiki II ). Music Link below. The video is extraordinary.

" ... heaven only knows, he's quite inventive, ... I'm refusing to look!"

I love mountains, but I live far from them. So if I start to feel nostalgia and want to enjoy sceneries that at least remotely remind mountain panoramas, I have to be inventive. So, if I try really hard, I could imagine that this is a view of distant low mountain ranges, maybe a red church of the Alps, and the wide and high sky over them...

Actually this capture was taken through the window of a moving bus, a normal photographer's no-no. Thus, a part of sky reveals the reflection of the window, the front bushes are "running", and the sharpness might wish for much better. Anyway, I still like this scenery; I did not have a chance to get out of the bus, but I could not let this view just slip away. Instead it had slipped now into my photostream. :-)

We at Flickr are incredibly fortunate to have with us one of the all-time greats of photography, www.flickr.com/photos/bill_dane/.

Bill has been making joyful, inventive and insightful work since the 1960s. He's been acknolwledged by people like John Szarkowski and other major authorities in the medium. He continues to push the boundaries today with exciting images that expand our notion of what a photograph can be.

If you don't know Bill's work I recommend not losing any more time before checking him out.

A snag, for those not into birds and such, is a dead tree often used as a perch for our feathered and sometimes scaly friends. The sunrise cast some nice pastel colors in the west, behind this snag, which attracted me and, who knows, the critters shown here as well. Represented are two Little Blue Herons, two Cattle Egrets and one Iguana. Boynton Beach, Florida (Little Blue Heron - Egretta caerulea; Cattle Egret - (Bubulcus ibis); Green Iguana, an invasive well established in south Florida, with the incredibly inventive scientific name of Iguana iguana.) A couple of tips: Little Blue Herons start out as white but can be easily distinguished from Cattle Egrets by their bill, which has a black tip, like it was dipped in ink, unlike a Cattle Egret's which is all yellow. Iguanas, which I like until they poop on my stuff, are mostly vegetarian and often share quarters with their roosting avian buddies, only occasionally taking an egg, or so I've heard.

This shot i used milk and food colouring.

Considering this was my first visit to Lumsdale, I decided to try and make some images of the classic views, with a view towards trying to being more inventive on a return visit at some point in the future. Although the falls area was very sheltered, there was quite a breeze blowing above the gorge. This was creating some motion blur among the greenery and resulted in some attractive softening of the fresh leaves towards the back of the image. My other main concern with regard to the composition was to position my camera so that I avoided bright highlights shining through those leaves. My view is that the brightest parts of the image should be the highlights in the tumbling water, which represent the main subject of the photograph.

{77~365 ~ Mar 18th 09} DeMummy is kinda busy at the moment and she asked DeGlass to remind her to do a few things during the week. This was not exactly what she had in mind, but DeGlass got inventive today while she was at work and DePost-it-ed himself to help DeMummy remember all that needed to be done ;) Car

This is called "the Sheave Tower" located in Blair, Ont. It was built in 1876 by a very inventive pioneer to harness the power of a creek and gain even more horse power to grind flour in his mill during peak times. Was fitted with an electric motor in 1931 and continued to work until 1954. I guess it's an early form of auxillary power lol.

These inconspicuous little flowers -pseudorchis albida- are orchids that can be typically found in alpine regions in Northern Eurasia. English common names (at least of orchids) are usually much more conclusive than the German ones, and although "small white orchid" isn't particularly inventive (if undoubtedly fitting) this flower is sometimes also referred to as "vanilla-scented bog orchid". Guess who forgot to sniff ONCE AGAIN!

I travelled out to the Western Treatment Plant last week specifically in the hope of seeing the Black-tailed Godwit, a migratory shorebird that spends its summer in Australia before journeying to Eastern Siberia and Alaska.

Ever since I found the Latham’s snipe in my suburb, I have been enthralled by the story of migratory shorebirds. There is something so heroic about the incredible journey they make each year, survival against all the odds. They must survive predation, typhoons and sheer exhaustion on the journey to their breeding grounds, only to find so often that their breeding grounds have disappeared. In particular, the destruction of the Yellow sea, a vital staging ground for out migratory birds has been devastating.

I recently read Flight Lines by Andrew Darby, a wonderful book detailing shorebird research and the East Asian-Australasian flyway. He talks about a concept called Ecological Grief. In it he quotes from a Dutch shorebird researcher, Egbert van der Velde, who was in his thirties when, for good reason, this environmental melancholia plagued him after trying for many years to save the Black-tailed Godwit nests and nestlings from meadow-harvesting machines “ I can hear it when Godwits have lost their chicks. They cry, they search, they sound an alarm.... you see, there is nothing for them to defend. Yes, then what?

Then I want to leave”

So many people from all walks of life have contributed to shore bird research and advocacy. These dedicated people are being heard and bringing about change, often in very inventive ways. Maybe this image will remind you to look out for the shorebirds in your area or take part in a count.

Let your imagination take flight and carry you on a heroic journey across continents.

A Native of Sweden he was brought to the United States as an infant, Claes Oldenburg grew up in Chicago. He studied English literature and art at Yale University before establishing himself as one of the most influential Pop artists. Beginning in 1965, Oldenburg turned his attention to projects for imaginary outdoor monuments. Oldenburg's Geometric Mouse, Scale A, 1/6, in the Empire State Plaza Art Collection, is a case study of this kind of visionary project. Derived from the shape of an early movie camera and the stereotypical Disney cartoon image, the work exemplifies the formal inventiveness and mordant witticism of American Pop.

Two objects used for trapping light, left a dress with internal illumination and right an agricultural installation. The dress was exhibited in Confluence Exibition Centre - Lyon (FR) during its opening weeks on 30 December 2014 and the agricultural installation was seen one day later (31 Dec 2014), during a walk outside Lyon. Leica M9 - Dress with Summilux-50mm 1.4 asph and outside installation with Summicron 2.0- IV, 35 mm.

The dress was made by a mix of optical fibres illuminated with LED and silk fibres. This gave the effect visible in the photo, where the whole dress actually emitted light. Because I had never seen this before, it was hard to move away from this magic dress; it was an extraordinary object. Because this dress could 'work' on ordinary batteries, it is beyond doubt that an inventive lady could actually wear this dress for a magic evening party.

No idea about the fibres in the agricultural installation, but their response to the setting sun was a marvel outstanding!

sooc. Surprised me too. ;-)

Vonnegut is a writer and the mono-synclastic infundibulum is entirely fictional.

But if you fall through it, you will have the properties described, as Vonnegut had at least a little familiarity with some ideas from quantum physics, which are not at all necessary to understand his work.

He uses them both humorously and inventively.

Just be careful you don't fall into one. It can get confusing. ;-)

Trying to keep up with these appointments...lol

In 1992, Josef Zotter begins to produce chocolates in the back office of the confectionary shop in Graz and invents the hand-scooped chocolate, a mixture of inventiveness and handwork, filled in layers and plies. Also new are the 70 g format and the chocolate coating instead of the cubed breaking pattern. The varieties of the first hour: poppyseed-cinnamon, pumpkin brittle with marzipan, hemp, crudités, champagne and grilled walnuts with marzipan. In 1999, the Zotters decide to bank entirely on chocolate. In the former stable of the parental farm, the zotter chocolate manufacture is opened.

During the planning of the NC&StL 576 move, I had a bright idea. Find the CSXT 576 and use that for a leader. Indeed things happened in a way I was able to get the CSXT 576 into Nashville for the move. However, it was less than ideal to lead a special move. Luckily, the CSXT 527 had just been through a yearly inspection and was freshly washed. One thing lead to another and some inventive planning allowed me to get magnets and number boards to make a quasi-576. A few touch up spots of paint and it was reasonable looking. Here the steed is parked at Kayne avenue after pulling the steamer into town for celebrations. March 9, 2019.

I'm sorry this isn't very inventive, nor last week but I wanted very badly to participate even though I'm recovering from surgery. I hope to get around soon and be able to post regularly. I also look forward to commenting on all of your lovely uploads. I miss favoriting all my Flickr friends work.

An overcast morning in Old Town. That's some nice, inventive craftsmanship and the birds seem to enjoy it.

With that dark head, piercing eye, and sharp beak, these birds often appear to be angry. Most of the time though, they're not. It's just their intensity and appearance which makes them seem fierce.

They are, however, quite high-strung and very alert, often wary of approaching humans, meaning I have to be fast and inventive to get a decent capture of them :)
