I took advantage of the beautiful light in downtown Buffalo a couple nights ago.

I let my NiSi filters to drag out the exposure. A 10stop filter gave me a 20s exposure on my Olympus OM-D e-M1 mk2 with the m.Zuiko 12-40mm f2.8 lens. All mounted on my Platypod Ultra to get nice and low to the ground. This particular image is actually a 40 minute exposure as I used my camera's Live Composite feature to continually stack 20s exposures to record the changing light.

Last Spring I had the opportunity to head to my favorite local site for astrophotography at the new moon. After I made my usual images of the Milky Way, I turned my camera in a different direction. I shared a similar composition a few months back, but I never was really happy with how the image turned out. So, I decided to try my had at a couple different processing techniques to see if I could get something closer to how I envisioned the scene. This was the result and I'm pretty happy.

Tech Specs: Image made with my Olympus OM-D e-M1.2 with the m.Zuiko 12-40mm f2.8 Pro lens and NiSi Natural Night filter, all mounted on my meFoto Globetrotter Classic tripod. This image was composited two different ways. The foreground was one long exposure to turn night into day for the sculpture and landscape around it. The sky used in camera with exposures continually stacking over 2.5 hours. Exposure info for each image:

Foreground: 12mm | f2.8 | ISO3200 | 60s

Sky: 12mm | f2.8 | ISO1250 | 10s over 150 minutes

Post-Processing: The images were both RAW processed in DxO PhotoLab 4 to take advantage of their Deep Prime noise reduction (as well as basic tweaks). Then I blended the images using Layers in On1 Photo RAW 2021 and made those adjustments to make the image look reasonably cohesive. Final adjustments made using Nik Color Efex Pro.

Continuing images from my recent trip to an abandoned grain elevator outside Buffalo, NY. This one is a handheld in-camera HDR.

The Gear: Olympus OM-D e-M1.2 with my new 25mm f1.2 Pro lens. Base exposure: 25mm | f1.2 | 1/6th | ISO 200 | EV -0.70.

Post-Processing: Initial RAW processing handled by DxO PhotoLab 4 then quickly pushed to On1 Photo RAW 2021. I did send the image to Nik Silver Efex Pro for a mono conversion, but I ended blending it back in, instead of going with a straight B&W on this one.

When I was going through my images of this particular bronco ride, I was struck by 2 different looks. In mid-flight, this horse was a specimen to be admired. But when on the ground, you could see the effort this horse was making and there is a definite sense of pain.

This was from a night out this past Spring at one of my favorite local haunts. In processing this image, once again I was torn over the mono or color version. Each has its own appeal to me.

Tech Specs: Image made with my Olympus OM-D e-M1.2 with the m.Zuiko 8mm f1.8 Fisheye Pro lens mounted on my Mefoto Globetrotter Classic tripod. This image is a stack/blend of 15 images - 14 light frames, 4 dark frames and a dedicated foreground image. The light and dark frames were all ISO6400 | f1.8 | 8s. The foreground was made taking advantage of the Olympus Live Composite feature. Live Composite allows me to continuously stack images using the same settings and the camera only keeps additive light. In this case, I used a base exposure of ISO400 | 10s | f1.8, and let the camera run for about 5 minutes while I lightpainted the "castle" and surrounding environment with my LED Lenser flashlight.

Post Processing: The light and dark frames with stacked in Starry Landscape Stacker. I then processed the stacked image separately from the foreground to taste in On1 Photo RAW 2020.5 and blended them. The mono version was finished in Nik Silver Efex Pro by DxO.

Buffalo First Friday - Pride Edition

Our city has a great tradition of gathering for the arts on the first Friday of each month. This is when the local galleries change their shows and there are often (during good weather) associated outdoor events. This month, as appropriate, was dedicated to Pride and there was a stage set up for Ballroom and I was lucky enough to catch it.

Usually, I will process my images in both color and black&white, and often, I will only publish my street work in B&W. But this week's subject matter screamed out for color.

A quiet, but cold night this weekend looking across the Niagara River towards Fort Erie, ON in Canada. This was my first night out with my new lens and the image is more a product of putting the lens through its paces than trying to come up with anything super creative, but I like this image anyways.

Technical: 5 shot HDR using Olympus' Hi-Res Shot mode. The resulting image is 10,330x5810px even after the 16x9 crop. Base exposure info: Olympus OM-D e-M1.2 with the m.Zuiko 25mm f1.2 Pro lens mounted on my Platypod Ultra. 25mm | f8 | ISO200 | 10s.

Software: Initial processing in DxO Photo Lab 4 with a roundtrip to Nik Analog Efex for exposure blending. Then processed in On1 Photo RAW 2021 with Nik Silver Efex Pro blended in with a light luminosity mask.

One last image from my recent trip to a wonderful hidden treasure of Western NY.

Tech Specs: I used my Olympus OM-D e-M1.2 with the m.Zuiko 8mm f1.8 Fisheye Pro lens mounted on my meFoto Globetrotter tripod to make this image. This is actually 22 stacked images. The foreground consists of 2 lightpainted images using the Olympus Live Composite feature (base exposure of 60s @ ISO800 on each). The sky is comprised of 20 images (15 light and 5 dark) stacked, each ISO6400 | 8s | f1.8.

Post Processing: The heavy lifting was done in On1 Photo RAW 2020.2, but the 20 sky images were stacked using Starry Landscape Stacker. I then blended to foreground images to get the light painting right on the image, flattened, then blended in the sky and processed the image as needed.

Image made with my Olympus OM-D e-M1 mk2, m.Zuiko 12-40mm f2.8 Pro lens, NiSi CirPl & Natural Night filters and meFoto Globetrotter tripod. Processed in On1 Photo RAW 19.6 with a roundtrip to Nik Silver Efex Pro.

Kiss the Sky...

Gerald, aka SpaceBearBeeBop, lost in a moment of flow. I haven't posted as much lately because I've been wrapped up in a project around the wedding of a couple good friends, but I wanted a little diversion. This image violates pretty much any principle of composition and I'm sure it wouldn't score well in competition. But lately I've grown more attached to the content of the image versus its structure and this one is composed to convey the emotion of moments like these.
