In the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility, workers remove one of the Stardust solar panels for testing. The spacecraft Stardust will be launched aboard a Boeing Delta 7426 rocket from Complex 17, Cape Canaveral Air Station, targeted for Feb. 6, 1999. Stardust will use a unique medium called aerogel to capture comet particles flying off the nucleus of comet Wild 2 in January 2004, plus collect interstellar dust for later analysis. The collected samples will return to Earth in a re-entry capsule (seen on top, next to the solar panel) to be jettisoned from Stardust as it swings by Earth in January 2006. This image shows part of the spectrum of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, captured between 6 and 26 December 2025 with the UVES instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT). Using UVES, astronomers studied the spectral signatures of cyanide, a molecule comprised of a carbon atom and a nitrogen one. More precisely, they looked at their isotopic ratios: the relative amounts of different forms of the same atoms. These ratios are sensitive to the conditions under which 3I/ATLAS formed, and are not expected to change much as the comet travels through space.
The spectrum shown here contains spectral features produced by 12C, an isotope of carbon with 6 protons and 6 neutrons, and 13C, which has 7 neutrons instead. These features are very faint, but astronomers know the exact wavelength regions where to look for them in the spectrum of the comet. Adding together several of these wavelength regions averages out the noise, making the real features pop out.
The team performed similar measurements with two isotopes of nitrogen, 14N and 15N. By comparing the 12C/13C and 14N/15N ratios with those measured in Solar System comets and in the discs of material around young stars, the team concluded that 3I/ATLAS likely formed in the outskirts of the disc around a star older than the Sun.

My first night out on my holiday I ended up here at Ham Hill in Somerset. Originally my plan was to do some steel wool spinning in the stone circle. On arrival there I noticed two other people here set up with what looked like a tripod, camera and laptop. So I set up my tripod and camera on the hill about 50 yards away from them. After a few test shots I captured a faint glimpse of the Milky Way but the Moon was still up and blowing out my exposure, so after about 20 minutes, the two others started packing up and left. I though I’d move down into where they were set up, just out of the glare of the moon, and took this shot. The glow on the horizon is from the streetlights of Yeovil.
The Milky Way f/2.8 ISO 800 49 seconds, the stones f/2.8 ISO 320 20 seconds lit up with my LED Lenser P7.2.

This was from the Camelopardalids meteor shower towards the end of May 2014. I was pretty excited when I saw the image on the camera screen, until my girlfriend told me to look up...& there in the sky was what had made the streak on the photo - a plane. Oh well...maybe next time!
